Sota Yamamoto

Sports Hochi report on Sota's official practice: https://hochi.news/articles/20211111-OHT1T51161.html?page=1

The 4th round of the Figure Skating GP series, NHK Cup, will be held at Yoyogi 1st Stadium in Tokyo from November 12th, and the official practice was held at the venue on November 11th. Sota Yamamoto (Chukyo Univ.), the bronze medalist of the World Junior Championships in 2015, did a run through of his free skate "Io ci saro (I'll be there)", landing an opening quadruple salchow. Later, he carefully worked on his triple axel and other jumps.

Yuzuru Hanyu's withdrawal from the NHK Cup was decided right after he returned from the second round of Skate Canada (Oct. 29-31), where he placed 7th. Initially, he was scheduled to be quarantined in Osaka Prefecture, but officials told him that he was to remain in Tokyo, and he has continued to practice in Tokyo. Yamamoto himself had withdrawn from the NHK competition in 2016 due to his injury, "I had a lot of frustrations. I want to carry Hanyu's baton to my own skating career," he stated. He said that he was still having some issues to work on in Canada, "I think I've been able to practice with completely different contents and presentations, trying to improve the accuracy of my jumps and the levels of spins and steps, so I'd like to clear the issues I had in Canada."

Thank you!
I have read a version of this interview (maybe by a different outlet) that said Sota could practice in Tokyo around midnight and early in the morning. Poor boy, he's going to be exhausted x_x

Maybe it's good I won't be at home tomorrow when Sota skates, because I would be so nervous for him. If I was sitting in front of my TV I am sure I wouldn't need to trim my nails this week as I'd bite them off :palmf:

I am glad Sota and his team are keeping the same layout. He doesn't have a quad combo, but I really believe he is not ready for one, and that his coaches assessed his mental readiness well. (I really think it's a mental thing, and not a physical issue, sans the axis and leg wrap that Ted mentioned). I would love to see these programs skated clean, like he did in Challenge Cup. The score he got there was great, but this field he's facing at NHK is much harder, and knowing Sota, he'll be nervous again because it's his first year with two GP, he's the least experienced there (along with Kao), and he's subbing for Yuzuru. I will simply be happy if he manages to gain ranking points again. If his peak condition comes at Nationals, then even better. At least even if he messed up here, it would lessen the Nationals stress.
Good luck, Sota! 🍀

After the SP he is 5th with 86.05: https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/7301cd844b426f25bdaa7c7929f12ba04ebc9b4a
Translation:

In the men's short program (SP), Sota Yamamoto (Chukyo University) scored 86.05 points, his best this season.

In the beginning, he landed a clean 4S followed by a 3A and later a 3F-3T combination, completing his SP without any major mistakes. After his performance, he looked satisfied and clenched his right fist tightly.

In the 6-minute warm-up, he felt agitated, but his coaches told him to calm down. "I was able to relax and concentrate on my performance thanks to them. If it hadn't been for the coaches, I wouldn't have been able to perform well today," he recalled.

The choreography of SP's "Yesterday" reflects his competitive life, which was plagued by injuries. "At the beginning of the choreography, I interpreted it as a choreography of stepping forward once, looking back and looking at the past, reaching out and searching for something," he said, adding, "I think these steps can show the struggles and pains of my life from my heart. I'm skating with a feeling that I'm baring myself open rather than acting."

On the 13th, he will compete in the free. "I hope I can show what I've practiced in the four minutes of the free skate. I'll be happy if I can skate the way I am and feel good until the end tomorrow," he said.

Thank you for Sota's interview translation, Rainbow!
ahah are you feeling better now?

haha, you bet! Well done, Sota! 💐 He is now 6 points behind his best performance ever (Finlandia), where he had two quads, one of them in combo, higher level of StSeq (I think), and generally better music which was more suited to his skating. But, Sota's skating needs to evolve, so experiments like this are also a good learning experience for him. Our commentators praised Sota, even the Eurosport guy whom I cannot stand. This time he is excused, as he called Sota's SP 'super' and his 4S 'unreal'. ^ ^

Now, of course I am happy for Sota's success in the SP, but let's remember the afore-mentioned Finlandia. The competition isn't over till it's over, and Sota must learn how to prevent the mistakes that happened to him back then, like losing his axis as a result of pressure/stress. 'Knowing' Sota (as well as a fan can, of course), I bet he is going to be doubly as nervous tomorrow as he was today, now that a top 6 chance has presented itself. That is understandable, but I hope his coaches help him deal with those feelings gradually. Time will also help him. If he skates well enough to accumulate points to get on the GP circuit next year, I am confident we'll see a calmer and more self-confident Sota.

Tomorrow, I will also be nervous, and simply keep hoping Sota can score well enough to squeeze into the top 8 again. That is his main task, and I'll be happy if he manages that. If he managed to skate clean on top of that, even better. But let's see how well he can listen to his coaches and focus and assess his timing correctly.

Please get into that top 8 tomorrow, Sota? 📿 🍀

Second round of nail biting drawing near. 😱 I think I'll be a coward and make lunch... I hope Sota is the opposite of me. Good luck and healthy ankles, Sota 🍀

Well, I for one am quite content. Sota placed 7th, same as in Canada, which is nothing to be ashamed for, competing against the big names like Rizzo, Samarin, Ignatov and the podium finishers. Well done, Sota! :)
Also:
- Sota has only been with his coach for four months, and he's already approaching -slowly but steadily- his PB of 240 points. 2 more points today, and he would have beat that PB! :drama:
- he is returning after a huge slump and confidence issues from last season. (That said, this weekend's Camden reminds me a lot of Sota in the latter half of last season - I hope he's okay.)
- His best performance ever got him over 250 points. And that was with no quad combo, and a fall on a 3A. If he can do it again in an ISU competition, then he'll have established himself among some of those who beat him today.
- he didn't beat the US top 3, but he did beat Tomoki and Camden. He didn't the Canadian No. 1, but he did beat Roman, Nam and Conrad. That is not a small feat! He managed to stave off Kao who beat him at JNats. No small feat either, considering Kao's impressive jump arsenal!
- He has not maxed his potential yet with these two programs. There's still the mystery of the low StSeq level which they can hopefully improve, and the jump landings.
- all SP and FS spins level 4!

Good job, Sota, and now please get some rest! 🛌 I am not sure I want him in the gala or not - it seems like he wants to go to Warsaw next week, so he needs as much rest as possible, but OTOH, he loves the cheering of the audience, and could use the money for gala participation. Hmm... Well at least it's clear he'll perform Beautiful again if he gets invited. He likely had no chance to even get his Dark Eyes costume, even if he wanted it.

There's likely zero chance his boots can be replaced before Warsaw; the number of tapes on them has been growing steadily, so I hope he'll have a new pair at least for Nationals. I wonder if this issue can influence the StSeq level?

Congrats Sota on the new SB, and earning those ISU points!
It's soooo clear he's in a much better place compared to last season, so kudos to him and his new coaching team!
I'm curious to see if he'll compete at Warsaw or not - on one hand, it'd be good to get another opportunity of a seasons's best + ISU points, OTOH, back-to-back competitions are exhausting! It seems like his new team is very down to earth, so I'm sure they'll make the right decision.

Reports on Sota NHK FS:

The men's free skate was held, and Sota Yamamoto (21) of Chukyo University scored 152.85 points in free skate and 238.90 points in total.

At the beginning of the free skate, he stepped out of the 4S and touched his hands on the ice. He went on to do a 4T, which was not on the planned layout, and landed it solo. He went on to do a 3A-2T combination, and then a solo 3A.

After the flying camel spin and the step sequence, he executed a series of combination jumps, a 3F-3T, which he landed beautifully, and a 3F-euler-3S which he did easily. He finished his jump elements with a solo 3Lutz, then he did a change foot sit spin, danced a simple but graceful choreo sequence, and finished with a change foot combination spin.

He seemed to be smiling a little wryly, but he enjoyed the standing ovation. Looking at the protocol, the 4S, the 4T, and the third jump, the 3A, each had a minor under-rotation, and each received negative GOEs, but the jump elements in the second half received positive GOEs. All three spins earned Level 4. The step sequence was Level 2. His total score was close to his personal best of 240.11 points.

Sota Yamamoto (Chukyo University) scored 152.85 points for a total of 238.90 points, placing 7th. He showed a modest fist-pump after his performance, and recalled, "I can feel a lot of growth in myself."

His participation in this year's competition was suddenly decided due to the withdrawal of Yuzuru Hanyu (ANA). "Rather than enjoying myself, I wanted to fulfill my responsibility. I was able to skate in my own way until the end," he said.

Thanks for your thoughts, and I agree re. his coaching team's strategy! It sounds very sound to me.

It is a new SB that Sota just got. His PB is still two points away. Maybe a challenge for Warsaw, or for a spring event? I don't want to put imaginary pressure on Sota before Warsaw with my expectations though. He's already done more than I hoped for. I'll be fine with any result he adds next week, as long as he's healthy and satisfied. Apparently a journalist asked Sota about Warsaw Cup, and he confirmed he'd like to go. But I suppose his coaches will have the last word.

Thank you! Now our commentator's remark about Sota increasing the difficulty of his content unlike most, makes sense. Do you know where the planned content sheet can be seen?

Yes sorry, my mistake! I corrected the original post. In any case, a SB is always something to be celebrated!
Meanwhile, pics from today's gala: https://twitter.com/AxelQuadruple/status/1459814566775250948
Is this a new shirt? I don't remember the sparkles in the previous one. Looks nice!

Sota is going to Warsaw for sure, according to this report after the NHK gala.
Translation:

One day after the NHK Cup, the fourth round of the Grand Prix (GP) Figure Skating series, a gala exhibition was held at Yoyogi 1st Gymnasium in Tokyo on the 14th.

Sota Yamamoto (Chukyo Univ.), the 7th place men's skater, performed "You're Beautiful" with plenty of emotion.

He will compete in the Warsaw Cup in Poland, which starts on March 18. After the free, he expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "I think this will be another opportunity for me to grow, so I'm going to shift my focus and keep working hard.

Another report on Sota confirming that he is going to Warsaw. This is after the FS, and he was looking forward to Warsaw Cup.

(skipping the first two paragraphs summarizing his free skate)
After the performance, he said, "I was able to control my mind in this morning's practice and the 6 minutes (warmup right before the performance). But once I started performing, my jumps were iffy," he said, "But compared to Skate Canada, I could reduce my mistakes to the minimum. I was able to stop falling down, which is something I have improved despite the short period of time since that event."

He came in as a substitute for Yuzuru Hanyu (26, ANA), who was sidelined with a right ankle ligament injury. "I'm sure Hanyu had a tough time, and I'm sure he has his own thoughts. Of course, I had mixed feelings about competing as an alternate, so rather than enjoying this competition, I wanted to fulfill my role. I think I was able to skate in my own way until the end," he said with a calm expression.

Before the competition, he had said, "I want to carry the baton from Hanyu to my own skating life." That was exactly what he did, and he delivered his performance.

Originally, he had only one competition, but he now competed in two GP series. He said, "I was able to know my potential and the difference between myself and the rest of the world. It was an experience that I can use in my skating career." At the end of the week, he will compete in the Warsaw Cup (Poland) starting on the 19th. He will be competing one after another, but he welcomes the hard work with an eye on the Japan National Championships in Saitama at the end of the year.

"I'm slowly getting rid of my big mistakes. I need to fix the issue of stepping out and work on tightening my rotation. I want to correct the little mistakes. In the past, when I was nervous or anxious, it led to big mistakes, but this time I was able to limit my mistakes to just this much. I can feel my growth, and I want to improve my qualities," he commented on his progress.
