Sota Yamamoto

In the end, Sota finished 3rd in the free, and 3rd overall. He needs a thorough rest now, and has a lot to think about before the new season.
I will not say congrats on his medal, because he didn't seem too happy about it to me. It was obvious he thought he'd not done as badly in the KnC, where he appeared relaxed talking to his coach. The reality seemed to hit him at the medal ceremony. The JSF is probably disappointed, as his FS scores are back to those of his weakest events. If Sota gives an interview tomorrow, I'll be surprised if he doesn't say he's disappointed with his performance. I can only hope this free won't cost him a GP next season. He'll need a strong showing in the summer (Gensan?) and the fall (a challenger) to win back JSF's trust, that's my prediction.

It's hard to say what I am feeling now.
It could have been worse. He didn't fall, and didn't pop. But it also could have been 20 points better, if Sota had had confidence in his jumps. He's light years better than this FS showed. Too many smaller mistakes cost him the silver here. The mistakes cost him the level on his last spin, too, as he'd fallen behind the music and had to choose between getting -1 for finishing late, or sacrificing some rotations.
He looked quite winded at both Kokutai and Challenge Cup, too. Maybe he has a health problem? It's possible, but he skated great at the Nagoya show last month.

He and his coaches have brought the SP scores to near perfection, and now it's time for some real effort on the FS, too. And I don't mean the tech, but fixing Sota's mindset. I would say this is where the problem is. Compared to his 2019 Challenge Cup self, he now lacks the ferocity, the determination, the strength of mind, and the killer instinct to win.
You know, I wouldn't even be surprised if we learned that Sota is battling some mental issue like depression or anxiety. I just hope that if so, it doesn't escalate in him not enjoying skating anymore.
Even with the mistakes, Sota's skating gives me joy. I hope he tackles whatever demons he has, and comes back strong next season. He has a loving family and coaching team, he has a devoted fanbase, so there's a lot to be comforted by. :ghug:
I don't know if he can regain his 4-2 and 4-3, but I want him to regain consistency.

I suggest 'Fight' as Sota's motto for next season. 💪

Thanks Surimi for the update and analysis! I agree with everything you said, and also wonder about his boot problems that seem to have plagued him this season 😔

I hope he manages to rest and recover well now!

ETA: Nice pic from Challenge Cup SP

Despite the eventual result I must say that I very much enjoyed Sota's skate. I'd never seen him live before and you really see the quality shine through. He could've been doing laps and I'd still be watching mesmerized :-) I hope he wasn't to dissapointed and returns strongly next season! I'm looking forward to seeing more of him.

You saw Sota live in Tilburg and became a fan?
I am happy to hear his skating charmed you ☺️ My reaction to him was exactly the same as yours! I recall posting in this thread years back that he could just be doing crossovers and I'd still be captivated ^ ^

His skating did indeed charm me! I first properly noticed him at Warsaw Cup with his (and Koshiro's) amazing SP and was very happy when I noticed he was on the list for Challenge Cup.

I thought his PCS could've been a smidge higher because the difference in performance, interpretation, SS, etc. between him and for instance Ilia Malinin was quite noticable.

Hallelujah, Sota is back in the world of the living after his silence. ^ ^ I was getting worried here for the boy. I don't have IG so I cannot view the recent photo collection, but here's a link to his IG at least: https://www.instagram.com/sota0110/ Apparently they're photos from Tilburg.

I hope he gets invited to a show or two, it would be really good practice for him. As would Gensan this summer. @Myr , have you seen this video yet? https://youtu.be/uPlf02q_HGA It's Io Ci Saro from the Nagoya festival in early January. Without the competition stage fright, Sota performs the FS to its full potential (sans the opening 3T), complete with lovely expression, 3F3Lo, and the Yesterday step sequence as encore. ❤️ Sigh, if only he'd felt this at ease in the Netherlands... I feel this is his problem in a nutshell. His only problem.

Well, that didn't take long before my wish for an interview became reality. Sota and his friends Kazuki Kushida and Reo Ishizuka are going to have an online get-together on the Unlim platform next Thursday: https://twitter.com/so_ta0110/status/1503614808016691200?cxt=HHwWgIDR7fHs9N0pAAAA
The downside for us overseas is that not only it is in Japanese, but it looks like you cannot be on Unlim if you're a foreigner? But maybe there'll be photos and quotes from that meeting.

Sota's coach, Mihoko Higuchi has started her own independent coaching team, "Figure Skating LYS."
Translation:

Figure Skating Coach Mihoko Higuchi Announced her Independence, Leaving Coach Michiko Yamada to Establish Her Own Club.

Mihoko Higuchi, a figure skating coach known for coaching Olympic medalist Shoma Uno and others, announced on her SNS on March 16 that she would be leaving the GP Tokai Club and her former mentor, Coach Michiko Yamada, and going independent.

She announced the establishment of "Figure Skating Club LYS" assuming the position of its representative, and wrote on its homepage, "I have been involved in skating as a coach for 31 years and also for 47 years in total including my career as a skater. During these years, I have had the opportunity to meet many skaters and have had wonderful experiences. That's why I want to help them not only improve their technique and human qualities, but also bring out their individual abilities and let them shine as they are. With this in mind, I decided to become independent in order to create a club where I can grow together with the skaters. I cannot express my gratitude enough to my mentor, Coach Michiko Yamada, who has been a great help to me. I would like my club to be a place where we can enhance the figure skating community together," she wrote in her thoughts.

Coach Higuchi was for many years an assistant to Coach Michiko Yamada, known for coaching Midori Ito, Mao Asada, and others, and coached Shoma Uno with Coach Yamada until the 18-19 season.

Sota's Japanese fans believe he'll go with Higuchi, but there hasn't been any confirmation from him. Whichever coach he chooses, I hope he can stay with her without any more upsets. He's already been through enough coaching changes in only 5 years - first Nagakubo retired before Sota was able to return from his injury, then he thrived with Naruse/Kawaume but left (maybe due to their insufficient political clout?), then he only was with Hayashi for a couple of months before Hayashi got arrested and quit, then the fiasco that was moving to Onishi who couldn't offer Sota training conditions suitable for a top skater, and now the Yamada/Higuchi split. I do hope this is the last big change for Sota. He doesn't deserve annual coaching turmoils.

Now, if Sota moves to Higuchi's center, I wonder if he'll return to the Howa rink in Nagoya? He had skated there for years while he was Nagakubo's and then Naruse/Kawaume's student. I don't know where the other base is located, but I think Sota moved back to Nagoya last year to be at the Tokai center with Yamada and Higuchi.

Anyhow, it looks like Higuchi's new team already has three subcoaches - Shota whom Sota already knows, and two ballet coaches. Three names are yet TBD. But if Sota switches to this center, then I already know what the expertise of at least two of them should be: A. a sports psychologist, and B. a jump coach. Sota needs both IMO, as he really needs back both his confidence and his jump exits. Possibly the two are related.

So, JSF are sending Sena to Egna Trophy. And there goes my hope of Sota having more points in the world standings than him at the end of the season, and getting considered for the GP rather than Sena. I mean, it's fair to send both to spring events, considering how they performed this season, and Sena is not to blame for Sota bombing Nationals FS and Challenge Cup FS, but... Sota will have to work mega hard to get back in JSF's good graces, and 600 points for Sena for beating the weak 4CC lower field, as opposed to Sota's measly 300 points for beating Grassl and Gumennik, is so laughable. Some get so lucky, and others so unlucky. I'm afraid Sota will be below all of Sena, Selevko and Tatsuya at the end of the season when 2019 results are scrapped. That stings, knowing how much potential he has. I hope he storms into the next season determined and well-trained. 💪

Sota's online talk with Kazuki Kushida and Reo Ishizuka takes place today on the Unlim platform. I hope the boys have fun!
BTW @rRainbow , is this a fan letter or one of those written wishes that are left at shrines? https://twitter.com/aphroditeinfini/status/1506535270656929795/photo/2 I'm afraid the only words I can decipher are the first line, 'please have more confidence in yourself'. (I think) Seems like multiple fans share the same opinion ;)

I checked out Sota's Twitter to see if he wishes Kazuki a good skate today, but apparently they're in contact through other media, probably Line. So, no updates from him, unsurprisingly. Some think he's about to return to school (that would be prudent), and he must also be busy watching WC and deciding where he wants to train.

Well well, look who can do an 'Amore' pose splendidly when he's not facing a woman but a tree! https://twitter.com/SapAssociation/status/1508732148840558593
(my mum's reaction when I sent her the link: "Whoa, he should practice his romantic poses with trees, who'd have guessed?" 😄 )
It seems Sota is involved in the same tourism promotion project as Kazuki, and the city that was chosen for Sota is Mitoyo. The tweets say there'll be a photobook with the three boys's adventures (IDK who the third one is) in late April... I think.
Sota is having a great time at restaurant, yum! Something sweet - https://twitter.com/SapAssociation/status/1508738090730672136 (that ice sundae! or whatever it is) ... and some salty seafood: https://twitter.com/SapAssociation/status/1508719445791092737/photo/1 It seems to be an udon shop.
Also, thank you to whoever the stylist is for making Sota's hair a bit shorter than he's taken to wearing... the eyebrows could have stayed though. lol. I'll never understand that eyebrow plucking obsession, I swear. 😬

Thank you for this! It seems that the third one is Keiji! I saw something about it on my TL but couldn't find the source now, apologies.
Can't wait to see more of this photoshoot :love2:

The third one is Keiji :giggle: The choice of city for him was Onomichi, in Hiroshima Prefecture.

Thanks for the additional info!
Here's the only remaining photo I could find: https://ameblo.jp/kmn-psn/image-12734686655-15095231241.html
My legs would die if I had to sit like that for more than 5 seconds... x_x
The photos are from yesterday and Sota looks happy in them all, so I hope it's a sign of his spirits improving. Maybe he's made a choice already regarding his training center and free program? I am still keeping my fingers crossed for him to get noticed by a sponsor. 📿
