Sota Yamamoto

I've never made a banner myself, but many figure skating fans seem to design their banners and get them finished in a shop or make their own banners at home using craft materials and tools. If anyone is interested in making banners, here's a website on how to make a figure skating banner. The page can be translated into English using Google or other online translation tools. Usually a paper banner size is A3, but a fabric banner can be wider. This page explains various banner sizes, but if you're interested, there are many pages you can click and go for further information.

This site by a Sota fan tells you how to design a banner using Canva, free design application. https://note.com/fuwamofu_kitty/n/nff0ad9ebf826

The event starts past 4PM CET for me. I won't be at home at that time :s I hope I'll be able to watch replays at least, or that someone uploads a video eventually.
Wishing good luck to Sota! I took a look at the panel, and am not sure how much favor Sota could get. I only recognize two names, but IIRC, one tech controller is somehow connected to the Champery camp, so who knows how they'll approach Sota, and one judge is a big name in ID but Sota's not a natural dancer, so not sure he can expect much from her, either. Well, what do I know; we'll see how it goes. Hoping he has a good time. 🤞

Here's the starting order:

Sota's sandwiched between Aymoz and Malinin, oooh... I hope he deals with it well 😬

Similarly, I hope his boots are alright; here they are, taped again:

I hear the delivery times are still not good for boots.

I was afraid of this. He looked nervous in the training photos. It's not that much getting a hard Challenger - he's done well against hard competition before. Provided the SP result is not caused by injury or boot issues, IMO it's a combination of:
- 1) a SP that doesn't suit him and showcase his strengths (and I suspect that for all his words of how excited he is about it, he *knows* it deep down, and will keep messing it up as the season goes, because he's insecure with this type of music),
- 2) Sota's usual nerves, which he always has when a lot is expected from him - and it is. He's entering this season as a GPF medalist, and I suppose it wasn't just the fans who were predicting a medal for him here. He also has the messed-up SP from WC hanging like a cloud over him, and JSF looking at him suspiciously because of it. As much as I care for Sota, this repeat of WC SP hasn't exactly proved them they can rely on him to deliver,
- and 3) a bad strategy, namely backloading his combo, although he knew, per his own words, how risky that is. No matter how secure the combo is in trainings, competitions are usually a huge stress for Sota, and what works in trainings may fail, and vice versa.
I have noticed this a couple of times - when Sota boasts about how well trained he is, or how secure some element is, he tends to mess up. It backfired at WC 2023, it backfired here, it backfires at every Nationals.
This score is just as weak as Nozomu's, who's just had a coaching change, and isn't doing too well. Sota has a stable center that he loves, hopefully enough money from prizes and shows and fans, overseas choreo, and yet this happened. And call me a party pooper, but I suspect it's not for the last time this season, either *cough*Nationals...*cough*

I still cheer for Sota of course, but I do think he needs to go back to the drawing board, work quietly, set modest goals for himself, especially before Nationals, and work hard at making his dream of a GP victory come true. He absolutely can, because he's got the skills. He's messed up and doubted himself multiple times in the past, yet he always rebounded and proved to everyone that he's among the best in the world. The problem is, the emotional overwhelms & confidence fails (as I interpret it) keep returning at times. He's not very good at dealing with pressure and mass media attention, either. I think talking less - in all settings - about his training, preparedness, and high goals, may help him there. Just my personal guess.
A SP change would also be a good thing, *if* skates like this one keep coming. Like I said multiple times, going back to her comfort zone from Wilson's innovation did wonders for Evgenia. Well-scoring Sota > 'New Sota'. Scrap that SP if it repeatedly doesn't work. RikuRyu just did.
I care if Sota's happy and not stressed. And I can tell he's happy when he has stable results and overseas competitions. I'm sure he'll do all in his might to retain them.

Now I think it would be great if Sota could use frustration and determination to bring out a solid FS, and improve his standing. How far up that would land him, is a question, but you never know in skating. Tomorrow's a new day, so good luck, Sota, and do your best! 🍀

Sota's program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNxdPlEGtjM&ab_channel=wraudw
It wasn't as bad as I'd feared, though asking Sota to emote to this type of music convincingly is like asking Nobunaga himself to entertain foreign audience while dancing to their tunes. Doomed to fail unless it's gala. Sota's just that way in competitions, and I hope that next season, he'll be given -no, scratch that, he himself must choose- music that complements his solemn, introspective 'competitive face'.

I saw the protocols - the judge who gave him 6-something for skating skills must be a complete loony, or someone with an agenda. He's got lovely posture and lovely glide and lovely SS in general, and the jump fails didn't affect the program that much. He's got great, fast spins, which is usually not rewarded enough.

I'm far from an expert when it comes to jumps. To me, it looked like the landing foot either had the wrong edge or he was too much forward?

Sota looked composed in the KnC, until he saw the scores. I don't blame him. Had he been a recognized 'artist' skater, or a Fed favored skater, he could have IMO had 80, or at least 75, even with those splats. But forewarned is forearmed, and now Sota knows exactly what type of treatment he can expect at Skate Canada, and all competitions that follow (China and Nationals). It's a harsh sport, and the judging is often meh. I hope this makes Sota tougher to deal with it.

@surimi I fully agree with your analysis. NGL watching Sota yesterday I had so many flashbacks from Zhenya's Orange Coloured Sky. Like Zhenya at the time, he is trying to showcase a 'new persona', and I'm sure he can do it practice, but when the competition nerves hit, he reverts back to his 'battle face' and it doesn't match the music :frown:

I guess the good news is that he *should* in theory feel more comfortable with Exogenesis, so here's hoping for a redemption free skate today. I'll be watching and cheering

After the whole thing, some - uneducated - thoughts.

SP: Well, you can't always match everything to 100% from the start. I appreciate that Sota tries different directions. And I guess it's the "right" time now cause he's old enough and not too old yet (if that makes sense).
He probably won't present this kind of music/program like Kazuki or Koshiro would, but I don't think this should be his goal. He can still do it "his way" and once he's more comfortable with the content, he'll have more time to develop little bits here and there.
There's a lot of potential still, but in this crazy chaos field that was a SP event only three others had more PCS (one questionable, but that's another story).

FP: Sadly, the overused as we know. But ofc, his comfort zone and he did show that. There's some really interesting choreo in there and his focus (citation above) for me also showed. Some bits seemed even Shomaesque to me, he has some arm movements and elbow placements where I smiled.
He really fought back and showed he's fully capable of those quads. 3rd best FS is another nice achievement. Being so close to a podium that early in the season might be the right push for the upcoming weeks and GPs.

(This is not an answer to or directed at anybody, just my two cents.)

I'm glad Sota regrouped for the FS, and just one place from a medal! Good job! 💪 My hope of Sota getting a bronze here almost came true.
He says he practiced the FS more this time than the SP, but perhaps there was still an underlying health issue. I can't recall where it was at the moment, but I read somewhere he said he was still not at 100%. Sota doesn't usually speak straightforward about his health issues or injuries, so I can only guess he was referring to the healing process of his bone bruise.
Here's Sota's FS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VahqYxpQJK4&ab_channel=wraudw
I'm glad the event's programs get uploaded on YT so fast. Hopefully they'll stay there.

He looks very youthful in GS's photo. This event kind of reminds me of JWC 2015, where he came up from 7th after the SP to get bronze with the 3rd best FS. He almost managed the same feat here, just a few points shy of the bronze, but with 3rd best FS. :]
Also, his FS score is not far from the GP free skates last year. The SP needs more confidence yet, methinks. But I agree with your assessment, Kirara, that he tends to revert back to his focused face in competition, and avoiding suave and merry music for now (in competition) would do him good. Well, let's see how it goes for him next week in Chubu!

p.s. I hope he doesn't get nasty treatment (ignoring) from JPN media for not getting a medal. It's a tall order for anyone but Shoma, Yuma and maybe Kao to be sent alone, alongside Kaori and RikyRyu, and not be overshadowed by their results.

ETA, judge #2 still on mushrooms, or pursuing their nasty little agenda, I see. Can one found out which delightful human being that was? Their 6-something for Sota's *skating skills* is sticking out among the scores of the other judges like a sore thumb. This person thinks Sota's SS are the same as Gorodnitsky's, people. And biased judging like this is just one example of just why many fans are disgusted with the unfairness in this sport.

Honestly judging has been wacky both at ACI and Lombardia last week, especially in PCS - some not being properly rewarded, some getting too much... But that's a subject for a different thread 😬

I was happy to see Sota yesterday putting up such a good fight, landing the three quads this early in the season is no mean feat! I could see he felt comfortable in the programme, and he really went for it in the step/choreo sequences, that was great. I hope this competition was a good measurement of where he is with the programmes, and what needs to be worked on ahead of the GP series. After Chubu he will have some time to prepare until his first GP assignment, and hopefully any potential health/boot issues will be resolved by then

A nice quote from yesterday:

and look who was there cheering for him! I love the Team Japan camaraderie 🥹

There's going to be an interview with Sota for Mainichi newspaper, his plan for this season being the main focus:

You have to admire the hairstyle, no?

And I guess it's the "right" time now cause he's old enough and not too old yet (if that makes sense).
He probably won't present this kind of music/program like Kazuki or Koshiro would, but I don't think this should be his goal. He can still do it "his way" and once he's more comfortable with the content, he'll have more time to develop little bits here and there.

If it were not for competitions, I would be happy with pretty much any song that Sota picks. But he's a special case when it comes to Nationals and important competitions, and jazz or anything even remotely entertaining is harder to perform than serene or dramatic music. And a SP, as they say, cannot win a competition for you, but it can lose one for you. Given how strongly he tends to react every year, I consider myself justified in being worried about how this choice is going to end when the real stress moment comes. I'd love for Sota to remain in the JNats top 10, and no doubt he himself aspires for a high placement. But unless reverse psychology works - that he messes up programs like Yesteday that he was comfortable in all season, so perhaps the opposite will happen now that he had misgivings from the onset - my observations of just how nationals work for Sota, make me feel reserved about this kind of experimenting.

Sota's likely on his way back to Japan now (if not in Japan already), and I hope he takes a rest and is more at ease in Chubu regionals this week. Hopefully he doesn't have any lingering injury or boot issues...
He can expect to see a lot of these in the audience stands in a few days:

As expected, the Mainichi article is paywalled: https://mainichi.jp/articles/20230917/k00/00m/050/020000c
What's visible doesn't say anything new, except that the slogan 'new Sota' was created when talking to Wilson. No surprise there, either. It's not that long ago that I read about Keiji wanting to show a 'new him', and I suppose this is something most skaters eventually claim at one point in their lives. The ones who don't are likely the white crows of the sport.
But we can at least appreciate this very nice series of Sota photos, taken in the summer at the Chukyo University rink: https://mainichi.jp/graphs/20230919/mpj/00m/050/025000f/20230919mpj00m050012000p
It's nice to read Sota's message of 'although I am New Sota, (I want to) podium'. Good luck!

I have noticed Sota didn't post his usual 'thank you for your support' tweet to fans after ACI, which he used to do in the last few years when he didn't have a great result. But it made me glad to see in the footage that some fans made it to the ACI venue to support him, and Sota's probably too busy for tweeting rigth now anyway, as his ACI- and Chubu-centric Unlim talkhow is coming up this Sunday!

You guys, Sota and Kazuki both did really well today! As happy as I am for Kazuki medalling (and annoyed about his score), Sota also deserves praise today, because he scored 95.28 in Chubu SP! (could have been higher if not for the spin levels... I'll never ever understand the issue the judges have with them in Sota's case) The only PCS change I'd make is take the last judge's score of 7-something for skating skills (while not as outrageous as the 6-something from ACI, still pretty wacky), and swap its place with the 9 for presentation from one judge (yup, Sota tries, and I sort of get the music's catchy for many, but I still think Sota deserves that 9 for his skating skills first and foremost).
I'm not going to say any 'what if's because the stress/kuyashii level is incomparable befween ACI and Chubu. I'll just say Good Luck tomorrow in the FS! 🍀
Thanks to our lovely Tsuyo, here's also a video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w8wSuvRXCWnCIL4pVmhltBtJPvUXSOE_/view

Yes, and his score was just one point below the GPF one ^ ^ He did really well!
He also had his Unlim talkshow today, and I suppose it was a merry meeting.
Here's the Chubu photo of himself and his coach Machiko Yamada which Sota posted on Twitter:

Putting this in as a new post, as more than two photos don't display in a single post.

- first, here's the FS protocol from Chubu: https://www.jsfresults.com/National/2023-2024/fs_j/block4/data0105.pdf
It just baffles me how Sota's spins got levels 2,2 and 4 :scratch2: And his StSq was also lv2. What does he do wrong? Whenever I happen to watch junior menon JGP, they're showered with lv3 and 4 for both... I don't think that can be explained s having more energy due to fewer quads. Just strange. OTOH, when Sota nails his jumps, he gets fairly nice marks. He landed all jumps in Chubu, except a 3A fall, and one wonky quad.

- Here's Sota posing with Yuhana, who was there as a reporter ^ ^

- a Sponichi article about Sota's victory: https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2023/09/23/kiji/20230923s00079000536000c.html
He says he finally feels like he can show what he practices, he felt that his season start was slower than the last, and people around him were a bit worried, but after Chubu, he feels he's stopped the low result streak, and finally starts seeing progress, though there are still mistakes here and there.
Similar article here at Hochi news - https://hochi.news/articles/20230923-OHT1T51342.html?page=1 - he just adds there are going to be great skaters on the GP, but he's aiming for the same things as last season (medals and GPF), and he's looking forward to Skate Canada.

- podium photo: https://www.nikkansports.com/sports/photonews/photonews_nsInc_202309230001507-4.html (does anyone else feel that Sota's younger training mate Honda resembles Kimichika Wada who was on the Chubu podium last year? :) )

Sota's in a 'Dou Desu Ka' TV show that aired today :) :

The tweet says Sota fell asleep when the camera wasn't rolling, and his reward to himself for winning Chubu regionals was going to a sauna :)

More images from the show:

Sota was interviewed by Yuhana from Nagoya TV after the Chubu SP.
Y=Yuhana, S=Sota

Y: Thank you for your time.
S: Thank you very much.
Y: It feels really weird, doesn't it?
S: It's totally weird (laughs).
Y: It's totally weird (laughs).
S: I feel nothing but a sense of strangeness (laughs).
Y: Excuse me. Can I interview you?
S: No, you can't (laughs).
Y: Well, I'm going to make you (laughs). You have no right to refuse.
S: Understood (laughs).
Y: What do you want people to see in this program, what are the highlights, this new you, what kind of new you do you want people to see?
S: Well, the way I skate to the tune and to the beat of the music and the tempo of my steps and so on will change the way I present my skating and I hope it has become a good program that I can get into the spirit of. After the first jump, there is a part where I express myself looking at the judges, and I think I could present a new style of expression. From that point on, there are a few more jumps, and this part is expressed by focusing on the jumps. Well, these parts and steps are some of the highlights of this program, so I hope everyone can enjoy it.
Announcement: No. 2 Sota Yamamoto, Chukyo University
Y (Commentary): (1:25) See New Sota choreographed by David Sensei. This is Yamamoto senshu's short. (1:38) Yamamoto himself enjoys this program both in practice and in competition. You can see New Sota everywhere. (2:06)Those wiggling arms are exactly New Sota's style. He shows off his moves to the judges.
(3:06) Yamamoto senshu's sit spin is also a highlight. The position changes smoothly with the stable axis.
(3:18) This is what I like. Look, he got on his heel. Assortment of stylish choreography.
(3:28) The way he reacts to the music, the tempo he places his feet, these steps are shown in a different way than before. (4:00) You can clearly see that Yamamoto senshu's own feelings are on it. Then the last highlight. (4:30) He skated the short program without any big mistakes. I heard his super coolness is at 70% of his standard, but I'm looking forward to 100%. Let's keep supporting him.

(After SP)
S: I was so disappointed in myself at the last competition, so I wanted to skate with all I’ve got in this short program. It was really hard to prepare for the competition in such a short time, with jet lag and all, but I managed to get into good shape in time. I will work hard to give my best performance in the free skate tomorrow. I haven't gotten 100 points in the short program yet, so my goal is to get 100 points in the Grand Prix Series, and I think in today's performance my salchow wasn't good enough, and I think I missed some levels on the spins after that, so I'm going to try to get those things together to get 100 points.
