stars on ice/ sasha's new programs

RD - skating is always better live....

and what can you really get with an infomercial style? when they showed SOI just as a show on TV it was so much better

but you know if you go with the attitude of "entertain me if you can" you're never going to like it...

Because of Sasha's performance alone, I will be buying SOI tickets at the end of the month.

As with the most recent Olympics, Sasha Cohen always amazes me, phenomenal.

Thank you, Sasha, for keeping me a fan of skating, once again.

RD, I'll echo what Toni said. Have faith and enjoy the show live. There's nothing like live skating!!!!!

We watched the SOI preview show after the horrendous NBC hacking job of "The Music of Seal on Ice" (delayed due to an overtime hockey game, tons of commercials, 4 skaters' programs completely chacked :cry::disapp:), and the preview show put a much needed smile on my face. Yes, it's no replacement for the A&E broadcasts, but thank goodness the focus was on the current cast , and we actually got to see a few of the complete programs of the skaters (plus a little hint of their second programs as the US tour dates were shown at the end). I needed that! :)

Dress

But what is that black thing that Sasha wears - a dress slit to her naval so her sparkley bra stands out? Those are awkward lines on an otherwise beautiful lady.

Linny

I watched the clip of Sasha's number with the men where she was on ballet shoes. Initially I was okay with it but then after after thought.............it seemed more like a circus show or freak show focused on contortions.........

yeah, i love almost everything that sasha ever wore on the ice, but this black dress (if it can even be called that) seems in poor taste. I think that sasha and her talented design team could have come up with somthing very beautiful and classy to fit that music. Her Starry, Starry Night dress on the other hand is beautiful.

How come no one said anything like this when Alexei did his program at SOI where he hung from the ceiling from a curtain or whatever the heck that was??

I don't really mind these variety acts, as a change of pace. I always looked forward to the hula hoop girl in COI.

I remember thinking what was that all about. I wondered if this was something he choreographed himself or if not how did they talk him into hanging from a curtain. I must say that he did it well I just did not care for it.

I remember reading an article that Alexei did regarding that number..it was actually his idea and he had to talk SOI into letting him do it and for insurance reasons he could only be so far off the ground!

I for one like it when SOI lets the skaters show more strenths and talents. Like Ilia's number this year...he composed the music for it and you see him on the big screens playing his own music while he skates to it.

As far as Sasha's number I thought it fit right in with the show. The guys are skating...there's still skating in the number to see...and Sasha gets to show off her flexiblitly. She still skates in her own two solos and other group #'s through out the show...it's not like this replace one of her solos...where she should be skating.

I honestly was not that great of a Sasha fan or Mike Weiss, but what SOI does with these skaters, as show skaters..has made me a fan of them. They are really putting themselves out there and I applaud that.

I liked seeing Sasha do it. It's a show, and hence, you will see routines that are out of the box.

that's what I felt as well. but that was likely because I didn't understand how it fit in with the rest of the program. Some seemed to take offense to me calling it a circus act but that's really the first thing that comes to my mind to describe it. whatever, I suppose...

Well, I found that Alexei in the gymnast costume distracted me from the merits of the program.

I think it's the old show biz ego at work. Everyone thinks he has multiple talents. Singers want to be actors, actors want to direct.

At the recent Belbin and Agosto charity show, Ben came out for his number and played the guitar. No skating, he just played the guitar. Good for him (I guess).

I enjoyed Ben's guitar number too - added to the variety and the "at home for the holidays" feel for me. :agree:

Plus, I think the fan factor is at work, too. The benefit show generatoed so much good will that Ben could have come out and stood on his head and everyone would have loved it.

Same with Sasha and Alexei. Their fans are so many and so enthusiastic that everything they do will draw a cheer.

If Sasha stays with SOI she has a chance to become the new Kristi (minus the tech) in terms of drawing in the audience.

Generating good will is right!!! IMHO an event like this is good for promoting figure skating on all levels. They did a great job appealing to a wide variety of "grass roots" fans where interest begins. I'm ready to go again next year!

Sadly, I missed SOI on TV. But I do think shows of this type - if they are to maintain themselves in the future, would do well to promote eligible skating at the same time. That's where their future "headliners" will most likely come from.
