Stephen Gogolev

Stephen Gogolev (Степан Гоголев) is a Russian-Canadian skater. He is coached by Rafael Arutyunyan in Irvine, California and represents The Granite Club of Toronto, with Lee Barkell as part of his team.

Born 22 December 2004 in Toronto, Stephen is the 2015 Canadian pre-novice champion, 2016 Canadian novice champion, 2017 Canadian junior champion, 2019 Canadian senior men's silver medallist, a two time provincial senior men's champion, and the 2018-19 Junior Grand Prix Final men's champion. He is the Canadian historic score record holder for the pre-novice and novice men total scores, the Canadian junior men total score, as well as a former world record holder of the men's SP, FS, and total scores.

Stephen is the first Canadian skater to land a quad Lutz in competition, the youngest skater to land three different quad jumps in a competition, the youngest winner of the JGPF men's title, and the youngest Canadian National men's medallist. Stephen has previously trained at DYUSSH №8 «Lokomotiv» in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and is a former student of Brian Orser.

Stephen Gogolev starting for Canada in Narionals, is he Canadian ? An amazing talent, saw some videos, I just fear a little about him, if his young body can stand that strain for the years to come.
Maybe his parents moved to Toronto only because her sons talent should be cared for in Toronto Cricket Club by Orser ?
Lokomotive/ Yekaterinenburg was also Kovtuns first skating club. Must be a solid basics they give young skaters there.

WOW ! Keep us informed about Stephen!
For Junior GP series he has to wait two more years. Maybe the big fight is 2022 OG: Bojang and Stephen. Maybe... I would wait, not clap my hands too early. Stephen has to grow inbetween.
Noone can predict how his growth is going to be, men are growing ca till 21 years. Not nice: Growth is happening in spurts and every time the athlete has to sort out his body for new, a reporter yesterday during OG Gymnast single final mentioned that already 2 cm height difference matters, the levers ( hope that is correct English) change and the athlete has to learn his body new.
As you all know, Nam Nguyen had ( has ?) big problems.
Some gruel thing just to remember what was done because of these problems: In the former German Democratic Republic female athletes were given hormonal growth inhibitors.

Katie, You are right about growing but one thing has been said a few times : if a skater has learned the jump before the growth spurts it is easier to relearn them than the opposite. The issues can become psychological or some will have injuries because of growth.... Nam, seems psychological but maybe his case is crazy has he is almost a foot taller than before.... Cynthia Phaneuf, her growth led to so many injuries... she's the one example that breaks my heart the most.... sigh

I remember watching him landed 3a at last year's SCAC(?) and this year he already got two 3a and one quad. I believe he is also training for other quad...
If he can keep up this speed of growing and without major injury he will definitely land 4a someday....
He's just 11, which means on 2022 he will be 17, maybe the possible youngest olympic champion of all time? lol who knows

I really liked his SP, especially. Nicely performed. Hope he just gets stronger and keeps himself fairly healthy (unrealistic i guess to expect no injuries in figure skating) and just keeps progressing. It will be interesting to watch his progression, especially through those crucial teen years.
