Tatsuki Machida

I have respect for his (certainly difficult) decision to quit during the season. I just hope for him that he will never regret it. And I miss him for selfish reasons. I have the feeling, that we only got a glimpse of what he's capable of.
I agree completely. He was just starting to show us what he was capable of doing.

Which is why I can't believe he left like this.

Well, the choice is up to each individual athlete. There's no "one size fits all" retirement. Hopefully he's happy whatever he's doing.

Yuzuru talked about Tatsuki's retirement on Figure Skating TV today

Brief translation: “Last season at Worlds he said ‘I will retire as an athlete and from now on I will become an artist’. We’ve always battled against each other and I thought of him as a comrade so I more or less had a hunch. It’s thanks to him that even my way of thinking about my performances has changed. The fact that Machida-senshu retired makes me feel very, very sad and lonely but at the same time I honestly want to say ‘you’ve worked hard’ and ‘thank you so much for everything you did up until now’. Those are the kind of feelings I have in my heart.”

Thank you for keeping the thread alive, ioanap. I'm looking forward to seeing Tatsuki's exhibition in upcoming shows, aren't they supposed to be in end of this month, right?

Miwa Nishida, a Prince Ice World regular skater, has posted this blog entry a couple of days ago.

It seems like preparations for Prince Ice World have started and she says "I met Machida-kun and he was as courteous as always. His program for the show is very impressive and I look forward to seeing it!"

The first Prince Ice World show starts in 6 days.

Finally, I can get off from the endless boredom without him in competition! Thanks, ioanap for the update. I want skaters to feel music as did Tatsuki....Anyway, I'm really curious to know what the program will be. Since Ms. Nishida commented about her impression on his program, I believe that would be an awesome one. :)

Great! Looking forward to seeing a video of his performance. Thanks ionap.:)

If things go similar to last year, I would expect a video of his (new?) program around June but meanwhile I believe there will be a press conference and definitely fan pictures. We will see tomorrow.

Just glad that he is still performing in ice shows and has not completely forsaken skating for his studies. At WTT, I recalled Tatsuki in Max's "Black Swan" and Denis' Josh Groban exhibition. Not to take anything away from Max and Denis, who I both like, but I can't help but envision Tatsuki performing those programs which I think are right down his alley.

It's natural to recall Tatsuki watching Max Aaron's Black Swan, especially since the program was choreographed by Phillip Mills. Max seems like a brand new skater now that he's working with Mills. I also thought about Tatsuki as I was watching Max's SP and thought Turandot is one of those grand pieces Tatsuki would be able to turn into a superb program.

I wonder if Max's choice of Phillip as choreographer was in any way influenced by Tatsuki's rendition of the latter's choreography in the same way that Tatsuki thought of working with Phillip after seeing Ashley's "Black Swan" choreographed by Phillip.

I agree that Phillip's choreography seems to be a good fit for Max. I had my doubts when I first learned that Max will in a sense "succeed" Tatsuki as Phillip's "muse," but definitely there was something working in Max's SP and LP for him and that could still develop further.

I think it's possible. It's not an exaggeration to say Phillip's partnership with Tatsuki was probably the most successful at least in recent years. I believe he is an underrated choreographer and I hope more skaters will develop interest in working with him.

I too had my doubts when I heard Max was going to work with him, mostly because his style didn't seem to match the kind of programs Phillip is known for choreographing but he was a pleasant surprise. However, given Phillip's praise for Tatsuki and his daring and surprising comment about him being a greater pupil than Michelle Kwan herself, it's safe to say nobody will take his place as the ideal "muse". ;)

Glad that tomorrow will give us big presents; photos and interviews. Thanks for the update!
