US Olympians to receive $200,000 per Olympics starting with Milan

The reason that this donor had an extra 100 million dollars to spare was that he just withdrew that amount from his former philanthropic support of the University of Pennsylvania, and in particular it's Wharton School, over political issues involving the Middle East and perceived antisemitism in U.S. academic circles.

That should make ice dance and pairs more popular, given that both partners collect, and especially dancers have longer careers.

It is not clear whether the first Olympics that counts is this year, or whether athletes competing this year have their earliest Olympics counted, but in case this year's Olympians get credit for their earlier Olympics:

Chock - 4 Olympics
Bates - 5 Olympics

Bates' first Olympics was 2010. He is first eligible by that criterion in 2030. He turns forty five in 2034, as he was born Feb. 23, 1989, so his first check is 2034, since that is later..

Chock's first Olympics was 2014. Twenty years then is 2034. She does not turn 45 until July 2, 2037, as she was born July 2, 1992, so her first check is 2037.

$900,000 is not a bad total haul for the couple, parcelled out between 2034 and 2041.

That is nice. It regardless of medal.
My first reaction was that they up the amount they gave to OGM.
After reading it toward their olympic dream .

My reading of the announcements is that it is not retroactive.

I am all for philanthropy and supporting deserving causes, but I really wonder how much of a motivational boost this will provide to aspiring Olympians. Is anyone going to say, "Gosh, I was thinking of quitting because training is too expensive, there is not much chance of a financial reward except for a few, I have to think about my financial stability in my old age -- But now, gosh, when I die in 80 years my heirs will get a paid up insurance benefit.. "
