Victoria Sinitsina & Nikita Katsalapov

I am seriously worried about having Volkov as their primary coach, he doesn't have top International coach status.
I'm also worried that they are off to Detroit this week before returning to Volkov, where they will presumably be skating coachless in Ann Arbor as they were before they left for the Test skates.
That looks to be a week wasted in their GP preparations.
I really hope they can get that FD ready in time, as if really ready, it will be a great FD really showing off their connection and skating skills!

From Vaitsekhovskaya's comments I understood that he's very enthusiastic about that, because he thinks it's his big shot chance. He's rescheluding everything now, to make as many room for them as possible. So who knows? Maybe it will work out for the best in the end.

I hope you are right, as from where I am sitting, I think Volkov was wise to leave Zhulin, having seen the FDs he gave his teams :(

But he left not because of that, Sambo school just proposed him some big bucks (or rubles) to work with Rumyantseva, whose dances honestly are not better  Anyway, he's good technical specialist, and that's what Vica needs.

I was against the splitting too. In fact, if you check my early post you would be surprised, because I was so furious :) But now it's too late, momentum is long gone and their technique is changed, they will need AT LEAST one season just to learn to skate together again. So nope, I don't want that.
I'll reread the split thread:laugh:

yeah yeah I know its impossible & obviously wont happen & as a person I support splitting up b/c of personal issues to be happy & enjoy what they do without stress
but as a skating fan I cant help but fantasize (only in fanfiction kind of way!) what if they stayed/ are back together

Anyway, he's good technical specialist, and that's what Vica needs.
they both need it:biggrin:

as for being coachless for a week - well they worked with Marina for a long time now & I hope they're much more experienced now & can handle it just fine
They kow what to work on, they're been learning new lifts etc
Its about time they became grown up

If Volkov is a good technician, that could help. For how rough they looked in general, I actually thought Nikita's twizzles weren't that bad? But someone taking another shot at stabilizing that would be a great achievement. And they just need to skate the programs in training and hit the technical elements, it was painfully obvious that they had zero mileage on them and that they lost a lot of training time through his injury. I want to see a good version of that FD in particular, I think it has great promise.

yeah what I found interesting is how many twizzle elements the programm generally has! those little twizzles here & there.
I found it pretty pretty (& it adds some bubbly flirty quality to the dance!) & they're not long so he doesnt manage to mess up royally:biggrin: Maybe they decided to put them deliberately for him to get rid of that problem once & for ever (who knows if its possible))))

I agree, it's just too late, and people need to get over it, sorry. I really liked I/K and still do think he made a terrible mistake in splitting from her (at least on a professional level) but it really just doesn't matter anymore, they are never ever ever getting back together and even if they did, so much has happened that it's very unlikely they'd be able to recapture the same magic anyway... I think some people also have rose colored glasses about their partnership because they had so much potential and that great success in Sochi, but really, while they were a simply beautiful team they were very inconsistent and half their programs were choreographic disasters (which isn't their fault but still). They were certainly positioned well going into this quad to take the lead but given their inconstancy which never truly got better there's no guarantee they'd even have been able to seize on the momentum.

I think it's because the Olympics made such an impression. But before that? It was four years of being all over the place. Their programs were often sketchy (it wasn't only Ghost...that was terrible, but there was a lot of generic, half-baked nonsense they somehow made work through sheer performance ability), they didn't ever much improve on their technical weaknesses IMO (apart from the lifts in 2014), they regularly produced disaster skates and you never knew if they would be contenders in any given competition or fall on their faces. Again. I think coaches and bad decision-making on that front also majorly contributed to the mess that developed (I think both Zhulin and Morozov have a lot to answer for, Morozov of course moreso...), but it was a mess. Had they gone on, it might have just continued as usual: Never even making it past B/S in Russia because they weren't consistent enough, winning some medals at smaller events, but regularly choking when it matters, unsuitable programs etc. Yeah, the judges loved them for a time, but who says that they wouldn't have dropped them once P/C came along and I/K continued to be their usual trainwreck selves?

Yes, I saw that as well. Don't know, they looked like they had just freshly learned their dances at the test skates... But perhaps it's worth a try? They still have three weeks or so till then, and it's a more low-key way to get feedback on their programs and correct things if there are issues. They have the last two GPs, so absolutely no time to make any kind of changes or adjustments between those two more high-profile events. And I guess if they aren't ready for Finlandia, they can still withdraw?

ETA: I can see the reasoning behind this tbh, they have the last two GPs and if things go wrong there that will be a much bigger problem than having problems at Finlandia. And they'll have to deal with the other Russian couples anyway, why hide from them? But then, I also thought that it was okay that they skated the rough versions of their programs at the test skates, they're behind because of his injury, everyone knows, better get it over with and show where they are at the moment. Though my feeling is that they will be doing major work on lifts, it seemed like almost all the lifts in the programs so far are placeholders? Or at least it looked like that. I also have a feeling that this is a sort of "let's see what happens" entry, and if they see that they'll need more time, they'll just skip.

I guess they are confident that the FD will be much better by then, especially as there are two other Russian teams assigned and they really can't risk slipping behind either of them. I guess it also means the shoulder injury can't be that bad after all.

I think you are right!
And the lifts are not the final version! They working on new lifts and will add them later!

If they actually show up ......
I think Finlandia is something they threw out there in case they feel prepared enough to compete. If not, they will be a no-show. Can't hurt to enter, though, and aim for that comp in training. There's still major work to be done on those programs, some lifts will probably be overhauled etc. And if they come to the China GP and an international panel decides something is illegal or there are other things that they want changed, it's too late to do anything about it because they need to go to Japan the very next week. That means the whole GP is done for them. In Finlandia, sure it's a risk, but if something goes wrong there is still time to make changes and turn it around until COC.

I just hope that they are in great shape for Russian Nationals. I apologize for my ignorance about Russian figure skating politics, but are their Nationals weighed as heavily as U.S. Nationals are? Or is what happens at Europeans also factored in?

I felt that they showed so much promise and genuine chemistry/friendship at Worlds. I hope that they can move up this season (And yes, I hope Nikita can improve on his twizzles. ;) ).

From previous seasons, at Russian Nationals the Russian Federation seems to take it's lead from the results of it's skaters in the GP and competitions in the first half of the season.
There was a clear attempt to bump up S/K to be No. 1 at Russian Nationals, but they just couldn't be put ahead of the more consistent B/S.
It seems that Russian Nationals are the place the National team for Euros is decided.
If you finish 1st or 2nd then it seems you are guaranteed a spot at Euros.
Finishing 3rd might not guarantee you a spot, if you are older or not considered to have potential by the Russian Federation.
Though last season the top 3 Ice dancers were sent to Euros :)
