Vincent Zhou

I watched CBC commentary of Vincent SP and FS. Thanks to Vincent's lovely Canadian fans. And thank you @sheetz
Also @DSQ thank you so much, I would LOVE to watch BBC commentary, would love to listen to the lovely Robin Cousins:luv17: has to say about Vincent.
Vincent's performances have been taken down from Youtube, but Vincent Chinese fans are carefully preserving Vincent's performances of various versions. Because of them, I got to watch all commentary versions except for BBC.

Sweet Uncle Kurt Browning mentioned Vincent lent his skates to him during his time in Toronto, and can't stop gushing about Vincent's delayed 4lutz and vocab:biggrin:, Also he mentioned that added "fly jump" in Vincent's SP stsq as a highlight (心有灵犀:biggrin:).
Carol Lane is a bit critical about Vincent's stsq, I think it is constructive, I understand her from a dancer (Ice dancer) perspective. I guess she wanted more lyricism.
I will quite another commentary from Carol, so that, people may get what she might refer to or what she wanted to see from Vincent's performance in the future.

eta,
"...and there are only a couple of people in the world that can make a move that is basically ugly look perfect, and she did, it just beautiful" -- Carol Lane

In terms of Vincent's SP stsq, it is indeed the plateau of the SP music arch, we wanted maxim projection there (and Vincent tried his best), but still could not ignore refinement and esthetically perfect/beautiful forms.

ETA: Uncle Kurt also says "does not looks like premeditate his steps, throw himself into the music, the edges, taking those skating risks , music risks.. "
I recall at the beginning of this season, I commented I felt Vincent is anticipating his move, not music flows in you, something like this.
Now, hear Uncle Kurt's commentary, So happy that Vincent's improvement is recognized! #soulmate
Carol "too much throw for me..."

"离开后才发现你在冰面上的时候,自信而又隐忍,写意而又精准,雄浑典丽,自成一派,却是花滑正宗" this is my fav description of figure skating from talented Chinese figure skating fans.

"写意而又精准" is perhaps the level we hope Vincent could achieve in the future.

Thrilled for Vincent’s first world medal! :yahoo: Vengeance for last year’s lost opportunity against an even stronger field this year. First half of the season was hard on him, but he worked so much to improve and the results paid off for him to be standing up on the podium.
Thanks again, lyrichord! A belated HIGH FIVE & OH, YEAH! :party2:

I second this!

Vincent did so well this weekend and his quad Lutz triple Toe has never been better! People will see what they want to see but what I see is a skater with so much potential!

Very excited for next season.

Couldn't agree with you more! Cannot wait to see Vincent's continued growth and progression as an all around skater! And so looking forward to next season's new programs.

I rarely post to Fan Fest threads, but Vincent really does deserve a whole lot of credit.

A year ago, there were vociferous (and wrongheaded) arguments that he shouldn't have even been selected for the Olympic Team.

Today, he's a world medalist.

It's a great story. Good guy just keeps his head down, works his tail off, and shuts everyone up with his performances.

PREACH! THIS! Thank you for speaking up for Vincent!

I know this is horrendously late (had to avoid all the drama pitting Nathan and Yuzuru against each other and the bloody incident in the ladies -- IamthisCLOOOSE to bringing my first little man in the world), but I just want to congratulate Vincent and all his supporters here. Vince has just endeared himself to me all season long and I tried so hard not to cry when he finished his FS and saw on his face that it went exactly as he wanted it to! I am not one to wish anyone ill luck, but I couldn't help but be pleased for him when some of the guys in the final flight faltered -- especially given how so many of their fans scoffed at him when he said he could medal at worlds. I'm pretty sure nearly all of his jumps are fully rotated, but honestly, I couldn't care less whether they were glossed over or not. He is a very talented young man and had the cleanest FS that night. Way to stick it to your detractors, Vince! Good luck at WTT! :)

Thank you, justvaliant, for that lovely message. It is never too late to congratulate Vincent (or any other skater) & write something positive & supportive. It really means a lot when someone goes out of her way to acknowledge a skater for doing a good job, when there are so many who make it their mission to tear down skaters who pose a threat to their favorites. Figure skating forums need more people like you. If Vincent was reading your post, I am sure he would be giving you this pose ;)

Does that mean you are about to give birth? Congratulations and wishing you and your baby all the best! (insert baby, stork, & flower emojis). :luv17:

Awww thanks! Vincent and his supporters are also totally welcome to all the love I can give. You guys totally deserve it. THAT pose is just precious! Vincent is just a precious human being!

Oh, yes! Thank you for all the well wishes. First child and still in my early 20s so I do need all the kind words and encouragement I can get. :)

I am so excited for Vincent's new programs. He's very likely to have new ones for the coming season, but I don't mind him keeping his world bronze medal-winning free (still feels good to say that!). There is just something about it that I really love.

As always, so looking forward to him and Nathan Chen leading the charge in US men's figure skating. I do feel like the two of them will be nigh unstoppable for many, many years to come!

You're so sweet! Vincent is most definitely a very special, gifted and precious guy! Unfortunately, he doesn't get enough recognition & respect which is why your kind words mean so much. You're only in your early twenties? My, I never would have guessed that given your mature writing. Can I make a guess? British?

Vincent's Japanese fan club just submitted some questions to him. I asked if there is any piece of music that he would like to skate to. Not sure when and if all the questions will be answered but I will post here when they become available. There is a good possibility that CTHD/Rising Sun could be used again in 2021/22, if he doesn't have a better one by then. It was perfect for Saitama, and it will be perfect for Beijing! I think it would be great for Vincent to experiment with unique music like he is doing with his new ex, and my hope is that he try different choreographers, even though Jeffrey has done a wonderful job for him. I am sure he will stick with Lori. Benoit Richaud & Misha Ge are innovative & stylistically unique in their own way. They may be able to do for Vincent what Benoit did for Bradie, bring out a completely new side of him.

Completely agree with you about the future of US Men's Figure Skating. Looking forward to seeing Vincent, Nathan, & the rest of US Team perform at WTT next week! :cheer2:

Once again, sending you lots of good wishes and blessings for your baby! :)

justvaliant - aww you’re such a young mom-to-be!

I have thought quite a few times this season that his FS would be perfect for the Olympic season.

Per Vincent’s latest instagram story, he has a new program choreographed by Cathy Reed to Higher Brothers - Made in China, DJ Snake remix. He will be performing this new program, along with Slow Dancing in the Dark at Stars on Ice.

Looking forward to seeing these programs at the show!

That was an excellent guess! :) My wonderful adoptive Mum and Dad are most definitely British, but I was born and raised in the Philippines up until I was 6 to a Chinese father and a Filipino mother -- hence the [very] soft spot I have for Nathan, Vincent, and this guy on my avatar (MCM).

Thanks for seeing me as a 'mature' person. I can get a bit too passionate sometimes when hate or disrespect is directed to these talented kids and I do admit to having been given a warning once or twice for the 'fiery, protective mum' tone I am wont to employ at times. So feel free to tell me off when I'm being too much in these forums.

Aaahhh... Jeff has done a really good job with Vincent this season, so has Lori, but the CTHD free is a well crafted, nuanced masterpiece! The music cuts are divine as well. And it's a bit underrated in my opinion -- which I think should not be the case as it approaches the same level of beauty as the magnificent Hanyu's Seimei FS. But I agree on Benoit choreographing for Vince, that would definitely be something fresh and mature, for sure! For the short I hope we see something upbeat like his current EX programs. It would be heartwarming to see Vincent enjoy himself and be happy like Nathan is this season with Caravan.

Thank you once again for the well-wishes! :) :) :) Very excited and nervous but skaters like Vincent and Nathan make it so easy and relaxing to be a fan. :)

A bit on the young side, yes, but I'm also the oldest of five adopted children so I feel kind of ancient at the same time. :) I also find Janice Chen's proud big sis posts to be super relatable! :)

Oh, wow! Thank you for these info about the new programs! Way to get me even more excited for Vincent! :) Although I agree heartily that this season's LP would be perfect for Beijing '22. I would FREAK OUT in a fashion unbecoming of an adult and a mum if he brings it back for the Olympics! It's a bit embarrassing how obsessed I am with Vince's CTHD and Nathan's Caravan!

Hi, oatmella, I'm not too crazy about the music to his latest ex but am happy that Vincent is branching out, trying new styles. As long as he connects to the music and has good choreography to give him a chance to groove out & expand his dancing moves, I am all for it. I just hope he gets some really cool & stylish costume to match the music. Glad to see him working with a former ice dancer. Hope Cathy brings out a new side to his dancing.

Looks like Vincent is having a really good time training at Kansai University's Takatsuki Ice Arena, doing Rippon 4Lutz and other jumps. Someone with a cute voice went "Ouch! or Awww!" and laughed after Vincent fell & laid on his side. Japan is providing lots of positivity & inspiration. High Five, Vincent! Keep up the spirits!

justvaliant, thanks for sharing your background. No wonder! I know a British penmanship when I read one, LOL. Being passionate and sticking up for your faves is much welcomed, as opposed to dissing other skaters, being judgmental & condescending. Your posts are very much appreciated.

Photographer Magia Gelada uploaded a bunch of Vincent photos from Worlds at her website. I love the smile and proud look on Vincent's face in the first photo. She also has some photos from Milan's SP press conference and they really show how much Vincent has grown in a year.

about the new ex music choice "Made in China", just wanna say the debate about which among Chinese Vincent fans are heated right now:biggrin: No more comments.
Cannot imagine RAP on ice though. remembered we discussed the possibility of pulling off certain hip-hop genre (e.g. jookin) on ice, which perhaps is still possible.
but RAP:eeking::biggrin:. Surprise me Vincent (and choreographer Cathy Reed (go mittens:biggrin:))
upon first hearing of this song, I feel it is kinda classic Rap (with some Chinese elements sprinkled in).

ETA, BTW, it is rapping in a Chinese ascent from Sicuan area, Chongqing(next season COC hosting city) is located there, thus some Chinese fans suspected that Vincent is going to choose COC next season.

Vincent is in Fukuoka, where he had some yummy looking gyoza & noodles (IGS).

Vincent Zhou ran through his free skate to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" this morning. Vincent's coaches were not here, so Mie Hamada looked after him. She taped his skate on an iPad.

Hmm, what is the significance of taping the skate on an iPad??? :scratch2:

Please, coach Hamada! Make my dream come true by doing your magical "Dalai Lama forehead touch" with Vincent! I just LOVE the ritual you do with Satoko & Rika before their skates! :luv17: Thank you for looking after our baby boy!

Maybe he meant that she took a video of his skating with an iPad. But the way he worded it gave the wrong idea.

Best of luck to Vincent! :luv17::luv17::pray::pray: I have a gut feeling that his skate will rake in the most points for Team USA (and I say this as a huge Nathan stan/with loving respect to all Team USA members). I just have a good feeling about Vince. Let's hope I am right.:pray:

Nikkan Sports has a very nice article on Vincent. With photo of Mie Hamada showing Vincent his skate on iPad, along with a couple of other practice photos.

The web translation is acceptable, as long as you ignore the "elephant" part  & change the pronoun when necessary. Some interesting excerpts:

There is nothing to lose, so I would like to try new things. The same is true for quad Lutz with hands raised. I think that it is a place where you can try various things.

Furthermore, I came to receive instruction of Japanese coach Mie Hamada about five (that must be a mistake) years ago. I took a lesson of 30 minutes from Hamada coach who visits the same place in choreographing and training camps of students, and although I am (she is) not the main coach now, the sense of distance is close.

When I practice with the players around ..., I will study basic skating. I have a habit of having my knees inwards, so I can straighten it. Yes, Dr. Hamada has received (given me) some advice.

Hamada coach, on the other hand, does not hide surprises in Zhou's potential. "Hamstrings (thighs and backs) are very well developed. The power is so great that they hit the ceiling." 4 rotations learn 4 types of Lutz, flip, Salchow, and toe loop. In recent years, the problem of lack of rotation, which has been plagued, has been seen at the exit by obtaining a withdrawal from training in the US and Japan.

Hamada will teach you how to put weight when jumping and how to direct your legs. Then, it was about to be overturned rather now. Besides jumping I learn basic skating. How to use your shoulders, arms and head. I feel that part is growing considerably.

So happy to hear Vincent was able to use the time in Japan after Worlds for further polishing of his skating skills. Thanks, coach Hamada!

It's time to take a quick nap so I can get up at 3:53am to catch Vincent on the livestream. Good luck & looking forwarding to seeing your Rippon 4Lz! :cheer:

Oh yeahhhh, Vincent!:cool::hap10::hap10: He was so adorable while cheering his teammates in the team USA box, too. So nice to see Vincent so relaxed and even fooling around a bit.
