A rich rancher died, and when his will was read it was discovered that he had left an inheritance to be shared among his three favorite athletes, Evan Lysacek, Johnny Weir, and Stephen Carriere.

The inheritance consisted of 17 prize horses, and the stipulation was that Evan (the favorite of the deceased) would get one-half, Johnny would get one-third, and Stephen would get one-ninth.

No one could figure out how to divide up the 17 horses in these proportions. So they called upon the Olympic champion, Shizuka Arakawa, for advice. The wise and lovely Ms. Arakawa rode up on her own horse.

"There is only one way to settle this," said she. "I will contribute my horse to the estate."

So Shizuka put her own horse in the corral to make up a total of 18. Now the division was easy.

Evan: 1/2 of 18 = 9 horses.
Johnny: 1/3 of 18 = 6 horses.
Stephen: 1/9 of 18 = 2 horses.

But much to everyone’s surprise, there was still one horse left in the corral – Shizuka's!

As Shizuka rode off into the sunset, Johnny mused to himself, “Well, I really can’t complain. I got more than my share. My share was one-third of 17, which should have been five and two-thirds horses. But I actually got a full six. One of the others must have come out on the short end and got less than his full share.”

Was it Evan or Stephen?

Well let's see; 1/2 = 9/18, 1/3 = 6/18 and 1/9 = 2/18.

9/18 + 6/18 + 2/18 = 17/18.

Hmm, it seems like things don't add up, so let's "normalize", or make everything add up to 1 while leaving the proportions the same. So we by multiply by 18/17. We get:

9/17 + 6/17 + 2/17 = 17/17. Good now everything adds up and everybody gets the proportion of horses he is supposed to.

Yikes!! Mathman is at it again....leave it to PolymerBob to use all this math to figure it out. I will be back with you in about 17 days with the answer.

MM, you are so funny! It's your thread tittle brought me here. I have to declare that I am not a math person. I could be totally wrong about it. But it seems fun to post here.

PolymerBob is right on the first part. But he hasn't continued it to say that

1/2 + 1/3 + 1/9 < 1 which means that there will be <1 horse left. The problem is who got the more share of that <1 horse and who got less share of it.

17/2 = 8.5 17/3 = 5.66666... 17/9 = 1.88888... so Evan got 0.5 more than his share which is 9 horses. Johnny got 0.33333...4 more than his share which is 6 horses. And Stephen got 0.11111...2 more than his share which is 2 horses.

So Johnny and Stephen were both robbed.

I know that Johnny competed in horse shows when he was younger so I think he was robbed again by Evan. Do Evan or Steven ride? The horseman should get the majority if not all of the horses!:chorus:

I think you folks will enjoy this math lesson.

It's so funny! Thanks!

So Johnny and Stephen were both robbed.

No, wait! The left over horse was
0.5 + 0.33333...4 + 0.11111...2 = 0.94444...6 horse, divided by 3 persons.

(0.94444...6)/3 = 0.3148148... They each should get 0.3148148... share of the left over horse. Therefore, only Stephen was robbed.

But I love the answer Johnny and Stephen both were robbed. It sounds so much better.:rofl::love:

well there are 1/4 horses (quarter horses) so I guess there could be 1/3 horses (third horses?)

Yeah, the error was on the part of the rancher (was his name Chiquanta?). He only specified 17/18 of his estate. Assuming that the remaining 1/18 was to go to this beloved Valentina P., she was the one who got gipped in the process :)

:rofl::rofl:Gee Mathman I saw the title of this thread and my first thought was "Why is MM posting skating in LeCafe........he knows better".

I was in Piel's boat if I'm being honest... almost had to go angry mod on him ;)
