As for the thread topic I think in the short period I've been watching/keeping up with skating, I'd put Kwan's loss in 2002
at the top. I don't think there was another moment I've ever felt so bad for a skater. In fact I almost never do.

To me, there are plenty of sports. Why do we need figure skating at all, when we have basketball, football and all the rest?
I like what makes figure skating stand out, not what makes it blend in with other athletic activities.

My heart broke in 1998 when Michelle Kwan did not win the Olympic Gold. To this day I still feel she was deprived. That said, I remain a loyal devoted Michelle Kwan fan more then ever.

Since I can't stay on topic, I'd like to point out that one of the best things about Kwan, Kurt, Brian B., etc. is that the true greats of this sport were able to enhance the artistic w/o sacrificing the sport. Now, its all sport with the added bonus of being sloppy and that is unacceptable.

I agree with you so much. Her psins look like the wasy spins are supposed to, and i love that opposite directio spin. great lines, fast centerd. Now we always have a change of positio every 5 seconds and the spins resulting are much slower and have little asthetic appeal.

I have three.
1. 1961 - hearing the news that the plane carrying the US FS team crashed in Belguim killing all aboard.
2. 1980 - watching Tai and Randy withdraw from the Olympic Pairs competition.
3. 1998 - hearing from a co-worker who accessed the information from the internet that Tara won the Olympic Gold Medal in the Ladies discipline.
There have been other events that have left me in a depressed mood but the above three caused actual tears to be shed.

These are my most emotional moments ever:
Sadness:
- Sergei's death. That was absolutely devastating.
- Angela Nikodinov's mother death. It happened 2 days before I went to USA, I'll never forget. I watched a replay of the Ladies SP while in USA and it was mentioned. I remember feeling so sad for her and the fact that I was already homesick didn't help.
- Irina not going to worlds to stay with her sick mother.
- Sarah Abitbol getting injuried in SLC. I remember watching the news about her injury and seeing her in a wheelchair crying. It was heartbreaking. I loved them so much.
- Viktoria Volchokva messing up over and over again.
- Irina on the podium in 2006. I didn't want her to win.I would had put Fumie over her. But the look on her face was heartbreaking
- Sasha falling on her Olympic LP in 2006. I sobbed for more than half an hour. It was devastating.
- Brian Joubert messing up at the Olympics. I had bombed his jumps and then he did his incredible step sequence , so beautiful. I felt so mad I burst in tears.
- Sale and Pelletier losing the gold medal. No need to say how much I shouted to the television lol.
- Hongbo Zhao's injury. That OGM should have been on his neck if it wasn't for the injury and the lack of preparation.
Happiness
- Sarah Hughes winning in 2002. I wasn't expecting her to win, it was such a nice surprise and her emotional was just overwhelming.
- Sasha's worlds SP in 2004. Just wow.
- Sasha's God Bless America. It was so beautiful it moved me to tears.
- Lambiel crying when he received his silver medal at the Olympics. I was still upset over Brian but Lambiel just looked so thrilled I couldn't help crying with him.
- Alexei Yagudin winning the Olympics. That was just thrilling!
- Shen and Zhao's worlds 2003 LP. Unbelievable!
- Whenever Abitbol and Bernardis won a medal. They were always my sentimental favourites.
- Jamie Salle's reaction to her win at the 2001 worlds.
- Gwendal and Marina winning bronze in 1998 and finally gold in 2002. I'm still waiting for an ice dancing team to steal my heart like they did.

Just curious - could you give an example of this? I can remember both being a tad sloppy, but I can't pin point a clear win over a clean silver medal performance...

I knew I shouldn't have included that. Oy. Well, I'll have to dig out some old tapes and see exactly which events had me gnashing my teeth and cursing the judges. I know it happened several times over the years.
IIRC, at GPF, heading into SLC, Irina won gold with 4 triples and several mistakes, over a six triple program from Michelle (one fall) and a clean skate from Sarah.

That was an interesting case though. She got very low technical marks because the judges considered most of her triples two-footed. However, some skating fans disagree with that assessment and think that she has landed them cleanly. Not being an expert myself, I can't quite tell who's right.

As it should have been! It was disgusting and unfair, yet there was no protest made.
