In terms of entrance edge, Irina's Lutz wasn't much better if better than Kwan's on a good day. She was no Maria in terms of having a true Lutz. What always bothered me about Irina's SPs were the composition. I hated that she did three jumping elements in a row.

Changing her lutz entry to not do it from a deep outside edge is basically what allowed Slutskaya to have the career she did. That jump was totally inconsistent for her with the ideal takeoff. In addition to the front-loading of her jumps that you mention, I also found the endings to all of her SP's during this period to be lackluster. Her spins frequently didn't go with the music either. She just kept doing the exact same spins, often in the exact same places, regardless of the program.
