What will 2010-11 bring for Caroline Zhang?

excuses for Zhang...

come on, she herself said the stress of the Olys contributed.

Speculations on her college choices?

Hmm. Well, it sounds like she won't consider going to college seriously until 2014 anyway, and she wants to go to a good school. I wonder how that would work. Can she take a 3-yr break and then still get into a good school?

She probably can't take a 3 year break. But she might be able to take a light course load.
Basically that is what Michelle did.

Can she enroll in an open university i.e. online classes? I mean, in the university where I graduated, we have an open campus where students take classes online and not worry much about when they can finish their degree. For a four-year degree, she can opt to finish it in six years, and for a five-year degree, she can finish it in 7.5 years. And she can take as little load as she like per semester, of course given that she must finish her degree within 6/7.5 years. In other words, our university gives freedom to the student on how he/she will take his/her courses.

Well, I don't know how the universities in the US works.
Just giving my insights.

Well, Michelle took some classes at UCLA and tried to go part-time, but eventually she had to give up -- it just didn't work for her.

It's getting more common for kids to take one year off before college (like Rachael), but 3 years would be a lot. I don't know why she's even taking the SAT or applying to colleges now if she's not serious about attending college next year.

Frauregina, of course she can do that. But in the U.S., the whole "college experience" is much more than just getting a degree. It's the whole living-on-campus, participating-in-a-gazillion-activities extravaganza. She probably wouldn't want to miss out on that.

I completely forgot the college extravaganza though I am only 4 months out of it.

Why am I thinking that she'll take a masters's degree?

Someone at FSU compiled the whole history of Caroline's 3-3 attempts in competition. Thought Caroline fans here might be interested to see it.

While she's been attempting them less frequently, her successful on attempts have stayed about the same. I'm guessing that she'll go for it again this year, now with the UR penalty slightly lower. She was always border-line on her under-rotations, rarely severe enough to merit a full downgrade (<<)

I think Michelle wanted to live in the dorms for her freshman year and later moved off campus, taking a lighter course load due to skating and her sponsorship responsibilities. She found taking classes to be a break from the expectations of skating. Other than an Olympic year, I think she took at least 1 or 2 classes during skating season.

Nothing wrong with taking the SAT's and applying for college senior year. I think it's an easier process to be accepted and then defer enrollment vs applying after a break. Also, considering the injuries, etc, it's not a bad idea to have college lined up in case something happens that prevents continuing to skate.

As Michelle jokingly said of herself during that commencement speech she gave, she attended college "on the ten-year plan." Another very bright skater who put off large parts of his college and grad school education (and completed both in the long run) was Paul Wylie. And he was at Harvard. He won his Olympic medal very late--I think he was 26--so his undergrad years lasted quite a long time while he prepared for competition. Then, as a touring pro, he was so successful that he didn't want to leave it for grad school. I believe he was admitted to Harvard Law School, deferred quite a few times, and ended up attending Harvard Business School. It worked for him, but I'm not sure everyone has his intelligence and tenacity in both those directions. It must have been like trying to run eastward and westward, both at top speed, at the same time.

Im sure her parents just want to keep all her options open. Sister at MIT is very impressive. I'm sure school will be a part of her future, and practice test taking is not a bad thing!

Didn't she have an injury during this past (09-10) season though? Maybe that explains why she hasn't attempted it lately.

Ironically, Paul's Olympics came after he completed his undergraduate degree - so, it's possible he might have had earlier success in skating if he had not been taking classes. and you are correct regarding his post-grad opportunities.

Matt Savoie was another skater who pursued education while skating. I think he's now studying for a masters in Urban Planning.

Nancy Kerrigan earned an associates degree. I think Kristi took some classes, but didn't complete a degree.

My understanding is that Caroline's main training base is now in Riverside with her new coach Tammy Gambill.

I thought so but she has been spotted at Artesia lately. I also thought that her family moved so that Caroline would be closer to the rink in Riverside.

Yeah, hopefully having Yu-na there alongside will inspire Caroline to skate faster, jump higher, train more methodically, etc.
Gooooo Caroline!

Yes. Caroline moved from Brea to Corona so she could train in Riverside. So I would guess she still visits Artesia once in a while for whatever reason.
