Will Mao Asada Make It to the 2018 Games?

Mao has a good shot. It really depends on her own condition and motivation, and the development of these other skaters. Satoko is very consistent now but can she maintain it until 2018? Also, even when Satoko skates two visibly clean programs, she can still be out of medal contention. I feel the JSF might think Mao would have a higher scoring potential. I also think if Satoko tries to change her technique to jump higher, she might not be so consistent. As for the upcoming juniors, many are promising but who knows if they will become actual podium threats by that time. I remember similar talk about younger skaters (e.g. Kanako, Risa Shoji) displacing Mao after Vancouver, yet that didn't happen.

I think Mao will continue to train for 3-axel, 3flip-3loop and 3lutz layout during the off-season.

Even though she didn't medal this season, she accomplished alot in terms of jumps:
3flip-3loop ratified
3lutz ratified
3flip-2loop-2loop ratified (no under-rotation and with tano)
solid 3salchow

She's halfway there to achieving a Perfect Mao.

THIS, additionally i want to add that her 3A in practice was monstrous in terms of size and how insanely quick she rotates, even when filmed from far away, it left my mouth wide open several times

A lot can happen in 2 years. In 2014, after Mao took a break and Akiko retired, Kanako Murakami was the top Japanese lady, but not for long. Satoko Miyahara was waiting right around the corner (3rd at 2012 Nationals, 4th at 2013 Nationals) and Rika Hongo came almost out of nowhere, making the GPF, winning silver at Nationals and bronze at 4CC.

This season Rika hasn't been as consistent; Mao beat her at Nationals and Worlds (you can also count Cup Of China but she almost won over Mao there). Satoko continued to aim high after winning silver at Worlds (she only fell once all season, never popped a single jump) and I expect her to continue improving because she knows what she needs to fix and has already mentioned she plans on adding two types of 3-3 combinations in her FS next season. She is also practicing a 3A.

Wakaba Higuchi will probably join them next season and I wouldn't be surprised if she were named on the senior Worlds team if she manages to make the podium again. Marin Honda and Yuna Shiraiwa will stay in juniors for now but Marin is very inconsistent and has had a lot of ups and downs this season. Yuka Nagai is (unfortunately) also very inconsistent.

It's very hard to predict but I think Mao will still be competitive enough to aim for a podium finish at the 2017 Nationals.

Satoko is practicing 3 axel

My feeling is that Mao has already been on a farewell tour, taking her bows and waving to fans. I would think this last Worlds will give her much to mull over; in one way retiring also brings to an end a chapter of her relationship with her mother. Finality might have special meaning for her. I expect plenty of tears when it finally happens.

My wish is that Mao's older sister, Mai, will travel with Mao to her competitions because Mao was more relaxed and determined in her Long program after Mai arrived and Mao really opened up with her emotions in the performance after Mai came. I think Mai helps to steady Mao's nerves and gives her the encouragement and emotional warmth to help her succeed. Mai did the same for Mao before the Sochi LP, though she was a bit direct in getting Mao back on track.

This.Will.Not.End.Well. :slink:

Midori Ito was even shorter than Satoko Miyahara and she was the first woman to jump 3-axel (and the best one in that till today ) so maybe we cross her out too early. Ito's other jumps were also huge though and we all know how jumps of Miyahara look like though.

It's crazy to think about it, but I can actually see Satoko doing a 3A, considering her incredible work ethic and drive to improve. She acknowledges the gaps between her and the top 3 at Worlds, and probably thinks that 3A might distinguish herself.

As for the height and rotation of the jump, I'd imagine they wouldn't be good, but then again, Satoko's 2A is actually the best jump for her, so who knows? I have a feeling she will do it though!

:jaw:  If she does 2 full pre rotations on the ice she may stand a chance...

Axel jumps can hardly be prerotated :rolleye: And her 2A-3T gets the most GOE points so yes, it is possible. Can we stop making fun of her and her work in the meanwhile? :agree:

She doesn't have to jump with the elevation of Ito or Asada. She just has to acquire a little more distance.

I mentioned Midori only to show that there were skaters of similar petit frame with this jump :) BTW. Has anyone ever seen Alaine Chartrand landing her 3A even if in practice or warm-up? Those few times that I saw her doing that jump in competitions ended with heavy falls this season. I believe though that she can jump a good one in practice, otherwise what would be the point of trying it?

The difference between Midori and Satoko is that Midori was never forced to jump against her dominant side and she could develop and strengthen her leg muscles without problems. Satoko is jumping against her dominant direction and is also training off-ice to get more power in her leg muscles.

Other than that before we jump to "this won't end well" conclusions, remember her speed of rotation.

the selection for the japanese olympic team will be terrible for me, I adore to Mao and Satoko but Rika, Marin and Wakaba are amazing too, they will be elegible?.
And I am not sure the japanese federation will treat to Mao like the US federation did with Michelle Kwan, and anyway the other option was Emily Huges :rolleye:. If at next seasons Marin or Wakaba start to be dominant like Evgenia or Satoko and Mao continue with inconsistencies, of course Marin or Wakaba will be send to OG and that will be the correct decision, in my opinion. But if they continue like Mao, sometimes losing and others winning and because a fluke they get a better performances at nationals , Mao should be chosen.

Everyone will be eligible by 2017 Nationals, including Marin. At the moment I consider Satoko and Wakaba to be the strongest skaters because they've had 2 consecutive seasons of consistent skating. Mao is very experienced so she can come back stronger. Marin and Rika are under question marks for me; Marin can win a competition now and place 9th at the next one, while Rika was close to winning over Mao at Cup Of China but then placed 5th at Rostelecom with mistakes and subdued performances.

Many girls say they are practicing 3Axel or 4Salchow (Nagasu and Chartrand, Higuchi, Honda, Medvedeva, Sachanovich, Gold).... but I am not sure what they mean by that, Mirai and Alaine even tried it in competitions, but for the others I think is more for fun and with the help of that pole harness
Don't hold your breath while waiting ;)

Wakaba is eligible next season, Marin will become eligible during the Olympic year, so will Yuna Shiraiwa and Yuna Aoki. And there is also Nagai who is a wild horse! And for sure I am forgetting somebody :dumb:

Well Satoko said she is practicing the 3A because she thinks it will be "necessary in the future". She said the jump has a good axis but is still a little bit short on rotation at the moment. She's doing a lot of different things in practice, including loop combinations but she will only add them in her layout when she is satisfied with them. She said there will definitely be some changes in her FS layout next season.

The difference between Ito and Satoko is power. Ito had the most powerful jumps ever among ladies, heck even most men. This was someone who jumped a 3A as high as Kurt Browning despite being half his size!

Satoko won't be doing 3A. Lol Most of these ladies who say they are training them won't be doing them in competition.
