Yulia Lipnitskaya

卡 here has the pronunciation of one syllable in her family name Lipnits'ka'ya. 软 means flexibility.
Because Russian names are a little long after translated into Chinese to remember and say, almost every Russian skater has their own interesting nicknames among Chinese fans.

:agree: I suspected that as well. BUT, anyhow, perhaps we should move onto other topics unless our non-Chinese friends are also interested in this? :)

It's quite fascinating!

Thank you Fayruza. The thing is that most Chinese words only have one or two vows. As a result, the same pronunciation usually corresponds to many words. Each word could have multiple meanings. More often than other languages, Chinese need more context to understand the meaning of a word or a phrase. That's why we are having a debate here. :p

I'm a professional linguist (what the hell am I doing here?!), so I understand what you mean! I don't speak Chinese, but you get to hear a lot about that language when you study linguistics.

More detailed interview CEO of FFSR Alexander Kogan:

- You can explain why Julya didn't appear on rewarding? And how it turned out, what Elizabeth Tuktamysheva, the gold medallist, knew about a ceremony, and Julia Lipnitskaia, silver, didn't know?

- Both girls went to hotel by bus. There was men and pair figure skating. Both Lisa, and Julya were sure that to an awards ceremony there is a lot more time. Besides Julya was in a condition of very strong nervous breakdown, took the defeat very hard. She fell asleep …

- Whether the truth, as Elizabeth Tuktamysheva learned about a ceremony nearly incidentally and in a hurry arrived by a taxi?

- It is a lie. It came by the bus, without any haste. Simply she managed to phone, and Julya slept, switched-off phone. I personally called it and couldn't phone.

- When you started calling it?

- I started calling Julya when I left from other rewarding, the coordinator of ISU approached me and told that Julia Lipnitskaia still isn't present in the ice arena. I dialed several times its number. Phone was switched off.

- And you called her trainer, Eteri Tutberidze?

— Yes, but also its phone too didn't work.

- There was information that Julia Lipnitskaia brought official apologies. But where also to whom? As far as I understand, public apologies weren't.

— Public - No. On a final banquet Julya apologized before the member of council of ISU Maria Lundmark for this misunderstanding, and also asked forgiveness for the president of federation of figure skating of China. It will be certainly fined. On it I suggest to close this subject, I consider it settled. Julya very much worries, she is injured — and the unsuccessful performance in any, and that huge attention which was riveted on history with rewarding.

Just want to make sure all are aware of the following:

(1) Interview with Lipnitskaya -- incl. quotes from her re the medal ceremony. It was conducted by Flade, and the text is on the Russian fed's website.

YL explains at great length what happened re the medal ceremony.

Also answers questions on topics completely unrelated to the medal ceremony.

ETA, samkrut  posted a partial translation in the Cup of China Ladies FS thread:

(2) An article in English from TASS about the ISU fine. Includes quotes from David Dore.

Oh she has all my support, which counts nothing I know, but I support her 100%.
Love her and love her skating.

Your support does count for something, Alba. It speaks very well for YL that you are with her 100%. :)

Sounds about right. She was so disappointed that she wanted to just cry herself to sleep. Poor girl took it hard. These things happen. She'll take it on the chin and learned a hard lesson, but hopefully she'll go easier on herself in the future. Her disappointment clouded her judgment and focus, and it sounds like she just forgot about the ceremony. That being said, what happened with Eteri? I thought the coach and the team would be all over this and get the athletes to the ceremony on time?

That reminds me of an incident in 2006. IIRC Sasha Cohen thought she had lost out on a medal in Torino, changed to go back to the hotel and then an official came running to tell her she had won a medal, and she had to run back and change really quickly to get on the podium! The parallel is the medal ceremony (although Sasha made hers) and of course, the flexibility.

Yulia, you had a bad day, but you didn't lose any fans today. Take this as a learning experience. You're still a champion.

Thank you for the article - it has to be the longest and most revealing interview I've read. It's also very sympathetic towards Julia!

You are gracious my dear, as usual. :)
Thank you for your kind words, and for these link.

I would like very much to have a full transaltion from both articles. Someone please help, when you find the time.

Samkrut translation is to Flade's interview?

Rewatching her FS again, I have a feeling she was skating in pain, whether it's mentally or physically. I just want to give her a hug. Don't worry baby!

Yes, samkrut translated a chunk of Flade's interview that pertains to the medal ceremony.

(Sorry that I lack the language proficiency to offer a full translation that would be reliable. Hope that someone else will be able to help.)

Eteri Tutberidze and Yulia (+video): http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/758948

ET: I guess it was a human factor. We were upset after the skate, but no bitter tears. We sat and talked for a while, then Yulia went to the hotel. I stayed and watched the boys. To be honest, watching it was like witnessing a massacre or a jousting tournament. I was shocked. We all, athletes and coaches, came back to the hotel by bus. But not all the skaters were reminded about the medal ceremony. Liza Tuktamysheva and Maxim Kovtun have been turned back and told: «Where are you going? Go back» But no one said anything to me. I went to my room to sleep. Five minutes before the beginning of the ceremony, the organizers called.

Yulia: The medal ceremony began at 22.30, they called me at 23.00.

ET: It was impossible to make it in time. We would take a taxi, there is no question, but... I've read different interviews. How can you not want to be at the medal ceremony? An athlete trains for getting to the podium, it's his motivation. Who said that second place is bad?

The rest here: From Russia with love [#15]: Autumn/Winter 2014

Thanks to quiqie for the transaltion. :)

No, I was speaking about russian language speakers. :)

Something is coming out on FSU.

I have no doubt that Eteri was in shock and Yulia was so tired to think of anything else.

There were so many injuries in the beginning of the season! We changed three pairs of skates. We decided that in the new season the boots and blades have to be new. In the end, it turned out to be a bad idea. I got a blister on the very first day, a huge one. It became inflamed, the leg started to hurt, and I was told there were some compactions that disrupt the blood flow in the leg. We had to do injections to solve them. Lost even more time.
I used the same brand of skates for 11 years, but there were problems all the time. The boots were always broken on the second day, they needed to be reinforced, to be tied tighter.

Now I switched to the new model. They felt like slippers to me, so unsual. On the first day I couldn't even understand what I was skating on. I got used to it, thank God, but still I don't feel 3F-3T and 3Lz-3T combinations in these boots, they are too soft. It's still scary to do it on full speed as I did before. So in short, there are lots of problems, it's very unsettling.

Q: What can I say: hold on.

A: What else can I do? I managed to skate somehow in China, even ended up in the second place. I hope it will get better. I will try to make the Grand Prix Final.

Hope the problem with these boots will be resolved.
