Yulia Lipnitskaya

I assume the music for Medvedeva's FS is the same music that Yulia rejected before settling on R&J (Averbukh's choreography for Yulia was reportedly given to Medvedeva). Yulia said she tried to skate to it, but after a week she couldn't stand to listen to it and turned it off. If it is the same music, I am surprised she managed more than a day. Compare it to Leningrad which is lyrical, organic, clever, with a clear message expressed musically. They are musical opposites. It was a choice that was certain to fail for Yulia.

Seems like he left all his students in St Petersburg (they were too young to leave families and follow him) and trains in Sochi completely new skaters, his fs school/group is still work in progress, not many details and rightfully so - I don't think they have met yet?

Thanks for this article. After Yulia's recent tribulations, the headline is especially comforting: ALEXEI URMANOV: "AN ATHLETE IS ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT THEMSELVES. AND RIGHTLY SO" It sounds as if he can make up for a lot that has happened.

I ADORE Zhenya's long program, but I never thought about it! It has intriguing choreo and interesting composition, but would I stand listening to it for an hour? Probably not. :)

I'm extremely interested in how it will work out. Where, how, when and how long? Wil it be rather motivational or supportive relationship? Who will change whom more?
What kind of coaching approach 17yo Julia Lipnitskaya actually needs?

At Nationals it was mentioned that the Fed higher-ups intervened and prevented Yulia from leaving. it's had to be rough for both Eteri and Yulia to spend almost another year in that situation, Eteri because she knew Yulia didn't want to be there (perhaps that interfered with Yulia getting the attention she needed) and Yulia for wanting to get a different coach but being prevented and basically having to have multiple more 'poor' finishes for them to say okay.

Thanks for this information. Last January the substance of the meeting with the fed was presented quite differently, so I appreciate knowing the source of the "intervention" information. This, plus QLutz's reminder about Yulia unfriending Eteri on vk, paints a very different picture of the Eteri-Yulia relationship than I held two days ago, before adelia posted the interview with Urmanov. For example, Averbukh's remark that he choreographed for Eteri (because Yulia ignored him) now seems chilling. We have to admire Yulia more than ever. I am curious if Eteri wanted to keep Yulia as a student when they met with the fed in January. Adelia used the word mediate to describe the fed's role, which commonly implies that the two sides are opposed. Does anyone know of a credible report about whether Eteri wanted Yulia to stay (up to two days ago I assumed Eteri supported her decision to leave this year, as I thought she always supported her)? Does the fed have the authority to overrule skaters who want to leave a coach, or is the fed limited to applying a "tremendous effort?" Thanks again for the information.

And do you remember, how Eteri once stated in interview she said to Julia about other possibilities in life or sth of that kind? I remember it very well, because I got a bad feeling about it, although she phrased it in rather neutral, elegant way.
In 10-15 years, someone will write a biography of our girl with all those little/big things worked out in smallest details, I tell you. ;)

No the FED don't have the authority to overrule a skater who wants to leave a coach but they can be used as a third party, trying to mediate between two parties, or they can put pressure on you either to leave a coach or not. It depends from the situation. I don't think the FED put pressure on Yulia not to leave. I think they might've been playing the role of mediators in this case. The Russian FED does support skaters financially so they have a more important role in skater's choices than let's say in USA or Canada. However, the rumors about Yulia wanting to leave Eteri started after the nationals (early January if I'm not mistaken?). At the time of Nationals nothing came out. With hindsight we may say this was all a wasted time and it would've been better to let her go since January but at least she will not have any regrets for not trying and have doubts later on that it might have been a bad decision taken in a heat of her bad results. So, all in all, it was okay.

I notice 3 levels in the way choreography relates to music. The first level is interpreting the music with movement. Yulia's early programs, such as Kung-fu Panda, are examples. The second level is interpreting music as feeling, Schindler's List of course. The third level is interpreting music as structure, which is Leningrad. The second level also contains the first level (otherwise it would ignore the shape of the music), and the third level contains the first and second levels. So the third level is the ultimate choreographic achievement because it combines the shape of the music, the feeling of the music, and the structure of the music. The music Leningrad has a clear structure through which it communicates its message, and Yulia has shaped her choreography to amplify that structure, in doing so she enhances the message. This is a tremendous achievement, she shows rare artistic maturity. Yulia has become much more than just a skater. I hope to post some observations about her artistic achievement that is Leningrad before long. To me Medvedeva is almost completely on the first level, which is flashy and exciting, but meaning and form eludes me. There is no basis for comparing the two performers. I am a passionate admirer of Yulia, everything she does makes me respect her more.

No, the music was different. It was from the movie Perfect Sense. The choreography and the concept of the program is a bit similar to the story of the movie Perfect Sense. Zhenya's music here is from the movie W.E, which has nothing to do with the story of Zhenya's free program. I don't know which pieces Ilia chose at the time for Yulia's program but this is the soundtrack.

Correct me if I'm remembering this wrong. But didn't Yulia say she wanted to quit skating PERIOD after Russian Nationals and early-2015. That and the rumor-mills got so out of hand (leaving for CSKA, TAT, other countries, etc) that it made national news. Perhaps that is why the Ministry had to intervene....who knows......it's all quite irrelevant now. I'm just glad she seems happy now, AND is still skating. :biggrin:

According to Mutko, Eteri and Yulia parted 'amicably, no squabbles or scandals.' So there's a relief in that.

(Side note fyi: Eteri does not have a vk account. She's got quite a few fanpages, but she herself is not on vk. Really can't imagine her having the time.)

I remember this very well. I am not going to turn this forum into a gossip column just to satisfy my curiosity, so this will be the last thing I write about her situation. I interpreted that remark, which I remember as clearly as if I just read it, to mean that Eteri was being sympathetic to her suffering. Unfortunately there is another interpretation, which you suggest. When I read that the fed put 'tremendous effort' into keeping the status quo that I began to question my conviction (why did it take so much effort, and if it required so much effort then they were wrong). Much of this is second hand, but there is factual evidence such as unfriending (I don't do Facebook so it didn't mean much to me, I'd forgotten). And mama complains desperately. Yulia the stoic will never complain publicly. So I am left to imagine some pretty awful conditions. My apologies to anyone who is offended by some of my recent posts as gratuitous speculation.

Where can I advance order 10 copies of the book?

Yep she said that in a later interview but the rumors about her leaving Eteri started after the nationals, early January. Somebody from inside the rink apparently told some journalist. A week later, I think, Yulia gave that interview saying that everything was fine. That they had a meeting in the ministry and they will support them with everything etc. Anyway, as you said it's all irrelevant now and I'm happy with her decision because I've been thinking about it since SA.

(Side note fyi: Eteri does not have a vk account. She's got quite a few fanpages, but she herself is not on vk. Really can't imagine her having the time.)

I think people are confusing Eteri with her daughter Diana. I don't know who unfriended whom but the unfriend thing happened between Yulia and Diana, not Yulia and Eteri.

Thanks, Alba. It was the word tremendous in "tremendous effort" that alarmed me. I needn't elaborate further. The competitive "lifespan" of skaters is even less than Mozart, every lost year is a tragedy, doubly so if they suffer unnecessarily.

I intended to mention a couple of things about Urmanov's fit with Yulia. He comes across as respectful of others including his students and their personalities (e.g. Gosviani), so maybe she will finally experience serenity. His comments remind me a lot of Marina (whom Yulia describes as a woman with soul) plus he seems protective (he filters and rejects questions from press that pry during interviews). Wiki says he is an ISU technical specialist, I assume in jumping at least, which sounds impressive. In addition to Gosviani, he was coach of a really young but aesthetically brilliant skater named Gubanova who shows the artistic sensibility of Yulia (again wiki, plus youtube). You undoubtedly know much more than I about both of them, but I mention this to emphasize the experience he's had with students who are artistically gifted as is Yulia. Plus she'll be in the country. I get the impression that he will let Yulia be herself and respect her accomplishments, which is paramount for her success.
