Yulia Lipnitskaya

Now, this would be interesting:

Q: Yulia, have you ever wanted to do a program with Japanese style? Every time I hear "Seimei" music from Yuzuru's program, I see you. How come?
A: I've been begging to do a Geisha program for two years.. They said it's not my thing )

AHHH!!! Please please please do a program to Chairman's Waltz, even if it's just for an exhibition program. Itzhak Perman + John Williams + Yulia = MONEY!!!!

I admit a Geisha program is not the first thing to come into my mind for Yulia either. The display of a Geisha is very formalistic, while Yulia tends to be the exact opposite, very individual and not by the rules. Then again she was always able to overcome any stereotypes in her previous roles and performed them very convincingly with a personal touch. She might be able to come up with a very unique and remarkable interpretation of a Geisha indeed. Her current top priorities should be her jumps and her competition anxiety though.

I guess we all have our own picture created in mind but for me a Geisha more than "formalistic" is discreet but very elegant. Their movements are almost like a dance. I think Yulia can be a wonderful Geisha. :luv17: I hope she will do it, maybe for the Olympics.

I don't think they are going for 3Z+REP in the second half. And I don't know about the 2A+1L+2S, because it seemed more to me like an aftertought at SA.

I would love to see her doing a 3L+3T in competition, though. Her loop was gorgeous at RN, and almost like a miracle comeback in her FS.

EDIT: maybe she went back to the 3Z+2T+2T she did in the second half of the program back in the Olympic season.

You are perfectly right:)
Hmmm, a 3Lz must be in combination then:/

I do agree that Yulia would be able to do a fantastic program to oriental music, but considering where the next Olympics are being held...a geisha themed program would not be the best idea... :slink:

...if she is at the next Olympics I mean. Otherwise, I'd love to see one any other time!

Oh dear. Why what's wrong with the Geisha in Korea? Because Geisha is giapponese?

This prompts me to listen to Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack by John Williams. I think Yulia can pull it off with a clever music edit.

Well, it just seems like a sensitive subject to touch upon. I don't know how well that sort of program would be received by the host country. They may take it to be offensive/insensitive. I'm also willing to bet that no matter which Russian skaters go to the next Olympic, they will probably not be all that liked. Might be best not to exacerbate that dislike. Maybe I'm just grasping at straws here, but it's an intense crowd...and boy can they hold a grudge. You only have to look at what happened to Adelina...

Koreans have no chill. I wouldn't be surprised if they boo-ed Sotnikova if she appeared on ice. I don't know if their resentment extends to other Russians though.

 You have a point there. ;)

Well, I'll be happy if she chooses to do a Geisha next season. She has the perfect coach for that kind of program.

I'm curious - has it something to do with the South Korean "comfort women" in World War II? Japan apologized only recently. Very late.
Then Yulia should do a Geisha program after the next Olympics, the season before could also be very risky.

Well it seems the relation between Japan and Korea on the theme of the "comfort women" are getting warmer. article
I don't think doing a geisha program should be a problem for Yulia as long as she consults Japanese choreographers and is culturally sensitive about it. Still doing a Japanese themed program at the olympics in Korea isn't possibly the best idea.

The comfort women survivors themselves, though, aren't happy with the recent agreement and apology.

I don't necessarily see a problem with a Japanese themed program at the Olympics, but doing a geisha one could definitely be seen as insensitive. I'm all for her doing one next season, though. If it's something she loves I think it will only help increase her motivation to improve.

As for what Koreans think of Yulia, I think it's safe to say that they have no grudges against her. Many people had her vs. Yuna at Sochi, but eventually she was not part of the controversial result and (technically) had nothing to do with Yuna's placement, so I think they don't hate her or anything.

But, even with the surprisingly pretty big audience at 4CC this year, figure skating is not as popular as people think. Everyone (yes EVERYONE) knows Yuna, from elders to kids, etc. But even with all that Yuna had done for Korean figure skating during her career, South Korea's interest for the sport has only grown a little bit. As soon as Yuna retired, many people in South Korea started to forget about figure skating. Even though the country FINALLY has skaters who have the content and remarkable level in the sport - So Youn Park and Da Bin Choi - So Youn has a big consistency problem, which sets many people off, while Da Bin is just not well-known yet. So the country is not seeing the success that Yuna had with their current skaters.

So the reason I said all of that (sorry for such a long paragraph!) is because it most likely means that South Korea knows little about other countries' skaters (since they need the spark of interest from their skaters). They knew Yulia because of Sochi, but they most likely do not know that she struggled a lot last season and is a bit different now from Sochi. However, I am not referring to the country as a whole. There are still some FS followers in South Korea.

Imagining that someone from Korea stumbles to a Yulia video of this season, I think they will most likely not be critical or insulting to her skating, at least if they find out why she's struggling and understand. Adelina would be a different story though, and don't even get me started on what they think of her...

Well, it sounds as if the ministry for foreign affairs made the agreement without talking to the victims first. No wonder they feel used again.
I think that if Yulia would do a Geisha program in the season before the Olympics and if she was being successful with it, the chances would be high that the media would show her doing that program as a preview to the olympic competiton, or write about her doing that program and that could turn the crowd in the arena against her. And that can't be good. It's only a possibility, but it's not the kind of risk I would want her to take.
