Yes, I've hade mistakes in the programs but I am generally happy with the free skate. This is because I generally got tired, even in the first half, in the FS and it was hard to continue skating. This was not due to my shape but due to nerves. At the end program I had a fall but it wasn't something unfixable. I even understood why I fell. It was rushed, I saw myself coming close to the boards, and had to jump quickly resulting in a tilted rotation.

Interviewer: You have a new dress in the FS.

YL: How does it look? :)

I: Wonderful. Why the change? It's not the first time this season.

YL: Marina Olegovna [Zueva] and I had plans to change it for the 2nd half of the season. Although the season results were not as... grandiose as we expected. We sew the dress anyway especilaay given that I was "jumping out' of the blue dress during the championships [Rus. nats.], and now I'm completely drowning in it.

I: You now train with Alexei Evgenievich [Urmanov]. Before you had a lot of stars on your team [Eteri]. How is it now?

YL: You need both competition and attention. You cant have your coach be with you every second of your life. But with Urmanov we have ecerything set, planned, analyzed and I'm still not fully adjusted to such training. But I always find something new everyday. I have to say how important it is to have this new atmosphere, these new relations.



2nd video: (this is after the SP)

"I was overall unhappy with the short. i skated full of emotion, went down on the combo, not sure why I went down, I don't know, maybe a lack of confidence. Maybe not enough more work on psychology.

Interviewer: Were you set on training for CRF or was this a thru tournament?

YL: We didn't make any specific plans for CRF, we just chiseled out what was set for the Rus. nationals.

I: Given your success in the SP at nationals, did you put more accent on the fs?

YL: We worked on everything. The 2nd half combo in the short didn't work. It is still unstable and we need to work on that, still.

I: Your improvement for nationals was the 'tano Luts in the SP. What was your goal for improvement for this start?

YL: We tweaked the arrangment of jumps in the 2nd half of the FS. There's gonna be 2 'tano Lutzes there, though we gotta make sure we don't have pops, and I will also try a tano flip.

I: When you talk about popping jumps, are you talking about phys. shape?

YL: Its more of a head problem. I don't quite "feel" all of the jumps yet. Its teqhnique. I'm not 100% there yet on technique.


Jesys christ that was long. Anyway, Yulia is direct in her answers and quite self-critical. I like such qualities. :thumbsup:



EDIT: When she talks about "jumping out" and "drowning" regarding the dress, I'm guessing she got leaner and more in shape??

Thanks a lot for the corrections, I will think it all over... Though I still have some questions (not only to Tyranid, but to any English-speakers here - if you'll be so kind to help :) )

1) concerning the dress - is it really a better variant to say "I was "jumping out' of the blue dress...now I'm completely drowning in it"? This is indeed more literal and closer to what Yulia actually said - but I was not sure if it would look clear enough in English, so I followed one of the "golden rules" of translators "if you are not sure about metaphors, slang etc. rather use the neutral description" :)

2) "i skated full of emotion" - well, that's not accurate. She says that Urmanov said to her (after the program) that this was because of emotions. I think it's relevant enough to say in translation whose opinion this actually is.

3) concerning plans - is it better to say "grandiose" or "bigger"? Besides, there is more focus on why they planned with Marina to change the dress (because they had larger plans for the season) rather than on the fact that the season was not too successful... So, is it ok to say here at first about the plans, and then about the results - "we had bigger plans... than it eventually turned out"?

The translation to English is unclear/confusing. To say she was "jumping out" of the dress implies that the dress was too large and/or too loose for her (or she was so startled that she 'jumped' out). To say she was "drowning" in a dress would probably imply the same thing: the dress was too large or too loose for her. If I were to say to someone in English: "You're drowning in that sweater", they would assume that the sweater looks too big for them (or rather, they are too small for the sweater).

'Grandiose' & 'bigger' are both appropriate to use in describing plans. In the specific translation here, it would be grammatically incorrect to use 'bigger', but rather just 'big'... "not as big as we expected." Even then, it would probably sound more descriptive to instead use words like: grandiose, grand, large, ambitious, lofty...

I actually took jumping out of the dress to mean it was becoming so tight and there wasn't room for all of her in there that she was or rather her body was jumping out of it.

In the context of figure skating, I assumed the other meaning. In another context (where no actual jumping is involved), I might be able to see the opposite, though I've never actually heard someone say they were "jumping out" of a tight dress. Maybe 'spilling out' or 'bursting out'?
 
Thank you, Sam and sabinfire , for the answers! So does that mean that my variant which was used in the video subtitles (that "the dress was big (loose) at the Nats, and now it's even bigger / looser") sounds clearer?

Yes, that makes a lot more sense to me, assuming that the dress was never small/tight. It was big/loose, and now it's even more big/loose?

Yes, Yulia says that the blue dress was big/loose at the Nats, and now it's even bigger/looser (maybe, it fitted at the previous competitions, I don't know, - that is not clarified). Literally she describes it with the expressions "was jumping out of it" (at the Nats) and "drowning in it" (now) - but the meaning of all this is that it was loose and now even looser.

Oh man, I missed that. Yulia slurred that REALLY HARD. She said seigenich very fast, and that is Alexei Evgenievich (Urmanov's first and middle name). As had been said many times - its easy to read a foreign language, its a little bit harder to write in a foreign language, but it's almost impossible to comprehend fast-spoken, native dialect.

Had this problem while studying Spanish in school. I could write an essay but couldn't make out a word out of what the Spanish news lady was saying. :)

as for slurring, that's the way we Russians speak Russian, I'm afraid. :) Patronymics are heavily abridged in pronunciation.

Doesn't compare with English, though. Especially British - "Let's go to a pawwty." ...there's a 'r' in the word 'party', I think you should pronounce it. :)

Oh I know. I kinda speak English as well. and absolutely love British English. :)
No way should that 'r' ever be pronounced - things get easier to pronounce without those 'r's :) I'm all in favour of Received Pronunciation (though I love Scottish accent as well)
