Yulia Lipnitskaya

And she can eat it! I'm glad that she's hitting the gym now and got rid of her weight issues. :agree:
Remember the powder diet? Gym isn't all that bad when it comes with a plate of lasagna. The way to a skater's heart is through her stomach.

But sometimes I really do wish she would go easier on herself.
I can't wait to see the 'unsimplified' version of Le Feuilles Mortes! :

As with rumors when she was with Eteri, Alexei relates that she can be temperamental. Before Alexei I have pretty much been in denial about this, partly because I put her on a pedestal, partly because I didn't trust anything said by those who seemed to have an agenda. As I read the Google translation of his interview, Alexei found her to be in pretty bad shape in many ways when she came to him. Much of her (understandable) irritability can be traced to her experience before Alexei, some is part and parcel of a Romantic temperament which she has in spades. I hope that Alexei can help her channel this with nurturing and understanding. His role is crucial. Coaching aside, he will be so important to a young woman who has only had women in her life.

Le Feuilles Mortes: I may appreciate the present version more. I respond to choreo far above all else. As the season progresses choreo usually suffers because programs are supercharged with point magnets. My favorite Megapolis was from the test skate, its choreo intensity was chipped away one competition at a time. Elvis was never technically oriented hence was immune. As Yulia said in the interview, "Dancers do not waste your time on such a "trifle" as jumping." Was she just trying to make me feel good? Probably not. Yulia has often said that her purpose in skating is to show us how she feels. Likely she and I have enjoyed our moment of greatest glory.

That is an awesome picture. I wrote a comment in the test skate thread about not liking that position but realized I was just saying what someone else had posted when she did that to the nutcracker 4 years ago. I watched the program again and I thought it's so cool when she does it. Her spins are so amazing. They're pretty much the same objectively but the slight variances and confidence make them look exotic.

I love Yulia's interviews. She's so blunt and self-aware and so insightful on top of that. I thought last year, her fear and nervousness translated itself across the tv even. I'm not a fan of her SP music but her skating to it is just fabulous. The difference in how far she's come is obvious in the SP and it highlights all her strengths. It's world class.

I like her Kill Bill music but not the program itself just yet and that makes sense cause she said it's still a huge work in progress. I think if she commits to the performance of it ala Wagner, even if the choreography is simpler, it's going to be great too.

I’ve decided to wait till Nepela to watch Yulia’s LP, when she’ll have had several run-throughs of it and feels more comfortable with it. I loved her SP! In gracefulness she has no rival, ditto in spins! Ordinarily when I watch someone skate in training clothes I wonder how it’ll look in costume, but this time I felt that the leotard accentuated her fine body lines, musicality and her breathtakingly beautiful movements. She’s had wonderful expression/interpretation before, but as she matures, her movements become still more and more graceful. Perhaps, working with Lambiel and the dancing specialist she mentioned in her interview helped too. And it’s great that she got 3Lz3T back!

The openness of her interviews always amazes me. What other skater would admit that they hate working on steps with their whole heart, even if it’s true? But the part I liked best was about the process of creating a program with Lambiel! Very interesting, and she creates such vivid mental pictures. Just as we thought, they suit each other very well in their styles and creative approach.

It’s a pity that health problems have interfered with her preparation for the new season, but her choosing to go to Nepela before SA shows that she’s confident she’ll get the LP in shape soon. Plus, I looked at the line-up in ladies there, and it looks very doable. So I’m very happy she is going there, for both of these reasons. It’ll be nice for her to move up in ratings, gain extra confidence, impress the judges and earn some money. Wish her the best of luck there!

So what did you think of her jumps, Isabel?

I sort of miss Yulia's skiddy axel...

I know it was a controversial jump, and "poor technique" or w/e, but it was very beautiful and elegant how she snapped up into and landed them IMO...

quote from Yulia's latest interview: "Dancers do not waste your time on such a "trifle" as jumping." Maybe instead of short and long, we should have technical and artistic programs.

^So....singles Ice Dance basically? Is that even a thing? If it isn't, I hope someone starts it and Yulia will try it out. She'd be perfect for it...

Anyway, isn't the long program supposed to be the artistic one, and the short program the technical one?

By dancers, Yulia was referring to a dance coach she worked with during the summer, a former dancer Eketerina Rubleva. Apparently she enjoyed freedom from jumps training while concentrating on dance. Practically speaking, it seems competition dictates choice in long programs (up to 7 jumps, 3 spins).
