Yulia Lipnitskaya

imo the Shindlers List program is overrated in the sense that detractors try to put too much importance on it. The 'she had to use this for cheap emotions'. etc

When the reality is everything she does is good and has emotional impact.

Its a very good program but she could do the same thing to any sort of melancholy song. For example that Feed the Birds song I posted which is a lot more recognizable song. Personally I have never even seen the Shindlers List movie so there was no sort of emotional tie in to the movie for me. It was all about her.

I think what really made her is her talent really blossoming in an Olympic year. She got a buzz from winning so many competitions leading up to the Olympics.

I have never watched Shindlers List, too. I have known the music for a long time before that but never have enough patience to watch the movie.

Other skaters have also overused this piece for a while. I have watched Joshua's version of Shindlers List and I have to say it's too cheesy to my taste (sorry Joshua's fans). So yeah, the point is not the content of that movie, the point is the program suits her so well, and wr don't need any background about the movie or history to acknowglege that she is very talented and she made the program shine.

I disagree to some point.
Yulia has said many times in interviews she loved the movie, watched it many times and always wanted to be the girl in red. In the documentary about her, she says she liked the story, Averbuch and Eteri roughly describe the work, storyline and even meanings behind several elements.
In my opinion Yulia and her team wanted to portrait the film character and (largely imaginary) story behind her and by neglecting it, you're depriving yourself of experiencing the whole Yulia's mastery in her Schindler's List program.

papa -- Too bad you're not her papa.
She will do whatever she wants and I still will be amazed and awestruck - hey, maybe I underestimate her and she will create another masterpiece? It's not like I wanted to discourage her, just expressed my doubts and worries, always wishing best of luck to our "umnichka".

One of the Mods from her fan page, who is in contact with Yulia, posted that she has chosen her music. She would not divulge her selection though but it seems she is happy and committed. Here we go. Next stop...cup of Japan.

I'm glad she's found her music. The Japan Open is Oct 4 right?

So we have 71 more days. As you can tell I'm going into skating withdrawal.

I went through the page of suggestions on there. Most were bad. People flooding the page with songs that are in no way useable for a figure skating routine.

Main one that intrigued me is this Star Wars song. Would be another John Williams song and recognizable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFcuT4Nbcb8

So, she is changing then, right? Good. I'm glad she found the music she likes quickly.:)

Could you give a link Sam? :)

Fans Overwhelm Julia Lipnitskaia With Ideas For Her Free Skating Program

Russian Olympic champion Julia Lipnitskaia addressed her fans in social networks with a help request. Young figure skating diva is looking for ideas for her new free program. She asked internet-users to send her their suggestions and help her with music choice.
An announcement occurred on official fan club group of hers in Russian social network “vkontakte”: “A half of summer passed by, but Julia and her coach still hadn’t managed to choose music and a concept of free program for the next season. The short program is prepared and Julia is very satisfied with it, but she and her coach still cannot come up with free program. That is why Julia would love it if members of her official fan group helped her with ideas for her free program and music choice.”
Not only fans of the young figure skater but also simple users of her internet portal and even mass-media paid attention to this announcement. The administration of the community later published new information, claiming that there was surprisingly big amount of suggestions.
“We suggested you to leave your comments on what exactly musical part of Julia free program should be like. The point is that our idea to question a broad range of users gained much higher publicity than we had expected,” the statement on the portal said.
The community administration noted that they “haven’t predicted such publicity” they said that they “wanted just to receive some ideas from users and guests of the group, not to engage all network users who have interest in figure skating.” They confirmed that it is Julia and her coach Eteri Tutberidze who are to be concerned with staging and character working out.
In the end reception of proposals from fans has been stopped. The administration of community encourages those ones who did not manage to submit their ideas, not to be upset: “We are confident that the opportunity to share their vision of the Julia’s image to be provided.”
At the Winter Olympics in Sochi Julia Lipnitskaia performed with free program under the soundtrack of the movie “Schindler's List.” This image of hers she invented by herself, and many directors have refused to bring this idea to life on the ice. However, Olympic medalist in ice dancing and the famous producer of ice shows Ilya Averbukh decided to risk it.
According to “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” newspaper, it will be possible to find out would Lipnitskaia use any option of those proposed by the fans, in late August. At this time, traditionally open skates of Russian Figure Skating team are held before the start of the new season.

The thing is I haven't seen the movie and I don't have to. Yet I feel the program very much. It's like absolute music and program music. Wih absolute music you don't have to know anything about the background of the composition, you simply like it because you find it beautiful. With program music you force yourself to apply into the background story of the composition.

- Much easier. Julia has matured, the music has deeper and thinner feel. She is in great shape, well rested, she was given a large enough vacation and a half months to recover and recover from such a heavy, exciting Olympic season. While on holiday her mood is very watched, it did not quite an ounce. So working with her a pleasure.

I'm happy about this. She really needed a good long rest and recharge the batteries. :)

I agree with that.

papa, sorry if there is a suggestion of sarcasm in my comment. I meant to express that the gentleness, sympathy, and respect so evident in your statement are the qualities that one would hope for in ones father. That same affectionate feeling sets this thread apart from any I know.

I always thought across the stars would be a great song to skate to, but no one ever seems to skate to SW so I thought it would never happen. That would work well for her because it's similarly lyrical and iconic like her previous LP.

This distinction is what sets Yulia apart from the rest. I am interested in the program aspect of her work, but I am intrigued by her ability to represent music abstractly. The abstract dimension is present in her early performances so I think we can assume that it is mostly her creation, that it pours out of her naturally. I suspect the programmatic part is largely from collaboration with Ilya. Her success in expressing music directly depends on her finding music that she can relate to from the heart. If she continues to find music that she can pour herself into, then we will see many Schindler's Lists.

Oh, I misunderstood you, thank you so much for warm words. And Good Lord, who wouldn't want to have such daughter?!:rolleye:
