Yulia Lipnitskaya

Remarks about lack of musical feeling are aggravating,

They will continue aggravating even more, if she keeps winning. You haven't seen nothing yet.

And much more a Dudamel than a Barenboim.

If you're refering to my comment, I didn't compare Barenboim with Yulia.
I'm saying that even in case you do not feel a musician, a ballerina, or a skater in our case, it's not like they might lack something. It's not even that you don't understand or are not knowledgeable.
It's the perception you have about them, and it's what you feel looking or hearing (musicians) them.
I don't love all ballerinas, no matter how good they are.
I love Osipova as Kitri, for example. She is the best in that role,IMO, but Lopatkina and Zakharova are the best for me, and the ones which I loved most overall.
It's one of the most natural things in this world. We also like or dislike people at first sight, for no reason at all.
I think people do tend to rationalise the art part in FS a bit too much. That's not how it works.
Stravinsky's Rite of Spring caused an outrage and riots on its premiere.
It's considered the most famous scandal in the history of the arts, and this all took place in Paris not in Timbuctù (with all due respect for Timbuctù).
Vaslav Nijinsky choreography was considered a scandal and defied every canon of gracefulness with the strange and awkward movements.
People and critics, hated Beethoven's Große Fuge at the time. One of the most difficult and the most contemporary piece of music. His real masterpiece. They thought it was all noise and no melody, and we're speaking about giants.

When I speak about FS, obviously I speake about top/elite skaters here.
There are many who lacks a lot of things, and it's there for everybody to see it.

Alba, I did understand your comment and knew you weren't making that comparison. I just took the opportunity to say something about personalities, independent of your intent. Barenboim can be aloof and even contemptuous, so doesn't get the cooperation and involvement of Dudamel who loves to involve musicians and audiences in his passion for music. Dudamel is loved, Barenboim is at most respected. I sense that same wish to personally connect with audiences in Yulia. You mention Osipova, who, like Yulia, works tirelessly toward her vision of perfection. Are you familiar with Serenata?

I especially like the girl printed on the back  Very cool looking.

I admire her for that. She said in an interview with The Telegraph this year:

“It was a really difficult role to work on,” she says. “The first time I danced Giselle was seven years ago, at the Bolshoi. In the Bolshoi’s tradition, you dance Giselle like [Galina] Ulanova” – who, in terms of reputation and status, is the Bolshoi’s Fonteyn – “and everybody expects that of you. I fought a lot with the teachers – I constantly said, 'I’m not Ulanova, it doesn’t suit my personality. She is an amazing dancer, but for me it’s not right.’ ” :)

Are you familiar with Serenata?

Yes. In fact is the only modern dance I've seen them doing. It's a beautiful and very difficult choreography, although I don't like too much the version of the song they used.

Me too. I love that costume.

I agree that Yulia has amazing artistry. Her graceful movements is something that can't be taught. So its pretty funny when people say things like she has no artistry or musicality.

Perhaps people notice her incredible flexibility and athleticism first (because it's so immediate), and the artistry second?
That being said, you're absolutely correct in that grace and fluidity in movement cannot be taught, and Yulia's got it in spades.

I'm a Perahia fan myself. ;)
I also love Murray Perahia. I like him playing Schubert.

For some reason I prefer Yulia the most out of all the girls in Eteri's squad. She has something that drawn people's eyes to her. Serafima and Evgenia are awesome, too. But I find Yulia having the best "it factor" out of them. Elena Radionova also has that "it factor", but she is different.

Yes. Elena has a natural perfomer's character, very outgoing, she stands out because she's so catchy for the eye with everything she does!

But Yulia seems to have that factor without even wanting it (I hope that makes sense). She doesn't seem to want all the attention she's getting. She's not trying, even on the contrary I would say:laugh:
But that's what caught me, that she looks like she has so much inside her, like she always holds sth back, you know like she is "deep" . And THAT makes you want to know her and watch her, to try and see if maybe she let's something out.
At least that's it for me.

My feelings exactly!

Totally agree.

You've hit it on the head. She's all about the skating, the work. She's not into self-promotion or doing it to get famous. Like Adelina, she treats skating as a job. Doesn't Yulia come from a modest background, too? It fuels and drives her. Remember when she got a car as a gift for winning the team gold, she gave it back and wasn't at all excited about the gift itself? She seemed a bit startled.

Also, the Russian press were all over her when she became a megastar following the team competition. There were cameras and other recording devices in her locker room. She stated she wasn't left alone during those two weeks in the run-up to what was supposed to have been a showdown between her and Yuna. That might have been the first time when she had to face intense media attention on that scale, and it affected her performance in the ladies' event.

And yet she is a STAR: a consummate performer, a fierce and determined competitor, and a tremendous athlete. But she wants everyone to remember: it all comes down to the skating: first, last and always.

Add me to the list who completely agrees with starlight.

Spot on!

I'm glad you guys understand and agree with this, I was starting to worry that it's just my mind being weird:laugh:
Such a shame that many people can't see this (which imo is her biggest attribute) and only see a little girl who's flexible and cute:disapp:

Thanks for the link Alba!
What could she mean by "her mother is rumored to be controlling"..? Like having a controlling character, or maybe like she's controlling the process that's happening. .?
