Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

According to some source on Twitter, Yuzuru was taking painkiller to compete in CoC. :bang: I hope they will pull him out of NHK. And even to the end of this season.

I don't want him to compete in NHK since its only 3 weeks away. But staying away from NHK and GPF should give him enough time to recuperate. He should be fine to compete in Worlds and 4CC.

Right after GPF is Japan Nationals.

Same here. Even though he could be get recovered by then he would not be at his best to compete. So far Japan has almost locked down two spots for men in GPF, I don't see the point of turning GPF into another national game like in which case might happen for ladies' GPF this year.

I'm sorry, I get that everyone is concerned, but let's actually WAIT and see what the diagnosis is, what doctor recommendations are, if he chooses to compete with watered down content for NHK, if he withdraws from competition per doctor's orders, whatever, let's just WAIT and stop speculating and playing armchair doctor. With the huge attention this event has gotten in Japan, like with TV ratings of +30% and millions of views of the incident online, I don't think the JSF/media is going to play mind-games with what is obviously a very serious situation with currently one of the most high-profile athletes in Japan, the backlash (and there's already been some articles criticizing letting him compete injured in the first place, not everybody is glorifying this incident) would be too severe.

We know basically know nothing of the situation, so let's just wait it out and keep wishing for full recovery.

I agree. What has been said on this thread regarding his injuries and whether or not he should compete at NHK is pure speculation. Someone tweeting about the medication Yuzu is taking is gossip, IMHO. I think we all agree the collision was horrific and the videos of him lying there bleeding from the head will not soon be forgotten.

Hopefully something positive will come out of this: the ISU will ammend current policies and require all teams to have a physician on site. I am grateful my country's team doctor immediately came to Yuzu's side and gave him treatment. My guess is the JSF is somewhat embarrassed by their lack of a trained and certified medical staff at this competition.

I agree with you that from the explanation side that it was a good attempt to explain his high score.
I'm probably just too sensitive. For me, the comments seemed a little cold like they weren't taking into account that his poor skating could be because he was involved in the accident. Hanyu looked like he was in pain while skating so of course he was bound to lose strength by the end of the program.

I also question how well the connection was made, especially with the male commentator.

In general, I think that Tracy Wilson does try to detach herself when she does do commentary and it can (does something very much) come off as a tad chilly. My feeling is that she does not want to appear biased. It took me a long time to accept her commentary of Yuzuru's 2012 Worlds Skate at Nice on NBC (just before she, David and Brian and the Cricket Club were involved in his skating) as not being cold. But since then, she has grown on me as a commentator (and I even like re-listening to that Nice commentary). She has a lot of wisdom.

I am surprised that Yuzuru skated his program as well as he did. I have watched and re-watched it on every feed I can find, and I feel so emotionally moved as to have trouble even to straighten out my thoughts on it. I wish that he had not skated, but I also know that he was way too strong a competitor for anyone there to stop him from getting back onto the ice. My feeling is that there is no one in the sport who can match his will and determination (and talent). In the free skate, he did not retreat, despite the pain and injury. He pushed himself beyond the threshold of what most people, including any professional athlete, can achieve. I do wonder whether, watching the NBC and CBC commentary, they had disclosed enough to give his skate a proper context. Neither broadcast (CBC or NBC) can be recommended as a primary (or first) source for really getting a feel of understanding the magnitude of what Yuzuru was up against and how well he pulled through given the circumstances. That may be due to our coverage being more of a synopsis of what happened rather than it being live coverage in real time, but, whatever the reason, neither provided as full a picture as a skating fan might require.

Definitely hoping he withdraws from NHK. Nationals is the ticket to Worlds. I'd rather he save everything for nationals then crash and burn at GPF. :( It would be a wiser move to withdraw from the grand prix series. We'll see. Let's wait and see.

A rather stupid question but how long does it take to heal a pulled muscle, or in general what is a pulled muscle? Is it just a sprained muscle?

I guess is too optimistic to expect the JSF to announce his health status at lunch hour. 12:45pm, and still waiting

I am touched by Yuzu's LP at COC and would like to watch more versions of it. So far we have Eurosport UK, Russian, and Italian. Does anyone know how to find NBC, CBC, and French version? :o:

I have the Dutch version, but haven't seen it. At the time I was watching with the British audio, and I haven't had the heart to rewatch the recording. I doubt there's anything interesting there, anyway...

Ahh... I was wondering what he was saying in the KnC as he was being helped out.. In lower quality feeds I couldn't hear properly so I thought he was saying "my leg hurts", but it was actually "thank you very much".

@phaeljones, thank you for your posts on the NBC and CBC commentaries on Yuzuru's COC FS and for giving us your own impressions on that skate. (Wish you'll post more often!) Yes, Yuzuru "did not retreat, despite the pain and injury" and may I add, the falls. Whether he should have been out there in the first place is another matter.

Re Tracy Wilson, I have always respected her commentary, and I have heard Kurt Browning more than once defer to her. I thought Tracy's commentary on Yuzuru's 2012 Worlds FS was spot on and complimentary except only for that part when she exclaimed, "I don't think he wants to leave!" when Yuzuru was taking his bows to which her male counterpart riposted, "I don't think the fans want him to."

I'm a little iffy though about her doing the commentary on skaters who are her students even if I must admit it has its upside too as in the 2013 Worlds CBC coverage where she gave the lowdown on Yuzuru's injury and its effect on his training prior to the competition. Incidentally in that coverage, I thought some of that "detachment" did slip away from her in covering that moving skate from Yuzuru. I guess she and Brian Orser have a lot to talk about Yuzuru at this time.

Awww when Orser is trying to prepare Yuzu for bad scores. I couldn't hear what he was saying and that's really sweet and then his face when Yuzu is first... emotions all around. The medal ceremony looks super strange with just two skaters here.

I think I heard him said "I'm so shock" in english then repeat it again in Japanese "びっくりしました” as he was sobbing :(

I find that this incident isn't just traumatic for them but for everyone watching who deeply cares about them. Seeing the blood, just their confused states and the falls, the pain they had to go through in their performances. I couldn't watch it. I kept trying to and I had to force myself to. I played their programs and everytime they fell or stepped out... I just closed my eyes real tight.
I never thought there would come a day when I'd cry for athletes I hardly know in real life. But watching them going through that was just heart breaking. Their kiss and cry areas were even worse. Watching Yuzu break down like that was so mortifying. He's just a kid, a vulnerable one at that too.

I understand. None of us know him personally, but how could it not break your heart? It's tragic on so many levels. I woke up today still thinking about him, hoping we would have some update, finally. This is the second time this year that the health of a skater has affected me so deeply...2014 has such been a crazy rollercoaster. Can this year please just end already?

Thank you. I'm a bit thankful Ladies event went first, because Kana's reactions reminded me a lot of that time of the earthquake. She was on a competition if I'm not mistaken but was worried about what happened to him. Team Japan was actually afraid he might be one of the casualties because there was no news of him until about 3 days later?

Here is an article , can someone translate a bit?? It was posted on yuzuru fb site...and comment was that the japanese feseration will now consider sending a doctor to all international events....can someone confirm??

I only know rough Japanese, but I think it said that it did not send a medical personnel there because of budget. Now they are in the talks to consider sending one in the future, and since Hanyu-San is a top class performing athlete, it looks like a valid proposal.

Wow, I didn't know that, but it makes sense. I can't even begin to imagine what that must feel like. How sad.
