Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

Apparently Brian did make Yuzuru withdraw from Finlandia and even enlisted the aid of Yuzuru's massage therapist to convince Yuzuru. I hope Brian similarly will put his foot down to stop him from skating at NHK should Yuzuru not sufficiently heal by that time. I am sure Yuzuru's parents will back Brian up if that's the case.

I doubt there was direct conversation between Brian and the massage therapist in Toronto.
I can imagine a conversation like this:

It would all be in Japanese
Masseuse: your back is in bad shape
Yuzu: yes, coach Orser wants me to skip Finlandia. I don't want to.
Masseuse: did coach Orser say why?
Yuzu: yes, ........relays Orsers words
Masseuse (who is fluent in English and Japanese): Coach Orser means.....

^Perhaps but that still stands as one instance where Yuzuru was made to heed caution and common sense. I hope the same caution applies to Yuzuru's participation in NHK as there are bigger titles to be won.

I think both Orser and Hanyu-san has been very frank when they saw inflation in scores. You can definitely hear Hanyu-san asked him:"What happened?" and he replied: "I don't know. You had some help.". I think it was very clear in one of the version that I watched, but sorry I forgot which one. I am sad that people will attack skaters for being "likable" to the judges, but that's just the way it is.

I am hopeful that he will pull out of NHK if he can't deliver the programs like he wanted to. I don't think he'll decide participation is good enough and deliver another program with five falls.

Respectfully, I disagree. I am concerned about his health and if that is not up to par, then yes, he should withdraw. However, if his health is back up then I hope he competes whether he has to tone-down his performance or not. I don't care about his score. I care that he has a chance to do what he wants to do - compete - as long as his health is sufficient.

Exactly right. Yuzu has stated several times before this season started that he wanted to grow, to not stay the same Yuzu and to WIN EVERYTHING. This boy loves to compete and as we saw last weekend, there isn't much that will stop him.

I think Brian is going to Japan to work with Yuzu as he prepares for NHK. If the doctors thought he wouldn't be healed enough, I doubt Brian would fly all the way there. He does have other students besides Nam and Javi, so it's not like he has nothing to do in Toronto.

I believe Yuzu is skating for Yuzu, not just for his fans. He is the reigning OGM and feels he has to prove he's worthy of that title. He is thankful for his fans of course, but that's not why he's out there.

Actually, I do agree with you on the fact that I don't care about his score or how many quads he's able to do. I am only saying that judging by his opinion regarding his own performances every time he did not perfect or complete what he set out to do, he always looked so angry at himself. I don't want him to feel pressured to skate. But, as many of you point out, he is smart and he skates for himself because he loves competition.

On an other hand Check out this kid . He reminds me of Yuzu a lot but at the same time I think he has more musicality than Yuzu.

Spins a bit slow though. I think the wonder-boy of Mishin camp is better (forget his name). About musicality, for some reason I think all children have better musicality when they were 10-14 years old than when they were older (this has happened to so many music students, I love them when they were 12, then when they turn 15 their music sound less musical). So it's hard to tell, really, how these young skaters will turn out to be when they get older.

Nice program ^^. He does remind me of Yuzuru, he even looks quite like him when he was younger ;). How old is he?

I know what you mean.
With talented youngsters, there's a raw energy to their work, be it, art, dance, music that they can sometimes lose when they get older and more 'educated'.
As an illustrator, I have to make a concerted effort to 'go back in time' in my own head to retain the wild abandon that translates in to an original 'style'.

I personally love Cha Jun Hwan! He just recently turned 13 and for his age I find him surprisingly talented! He just debuted both the SP and FS for this season. I want to see what type of skater he'll grow up to be. Not to mention that mushroom haircut lol

I think his rival can be this wonder boy from Mishin camp, who has just turned 12: http://youtu.be/1rVUSvYvGfA
But we will have to wait, time will tell, surely. Because as I have said... I've seen so many talented young musicians got buried and lost their magic early. I hope they will improve and get over the teenager phase.

Yuzuru was weird, I don't think I saw much in Yuzuru when he was 13 years old. I thought he looked funny at the age of 10-13. His fast spins by that time was what I remember about him, not his jumps. When he was 15 and won Junior Wc, his jumps have become much better, good elevation, which made me surprised because  well I didn't think he could improve his jumps that fast. At the time Artur Gachinski seemed to be better IMo. So it's extremely difficult to tell. Really, how young skaters develop and improve.

I think in this particular case of this young skater it is about the choreo being done in such an emphasising way. Older skaters too can do that if they want or their choreographers pay a special attention to this matter. Only few actually care that much. And when they are getting older- they have to deal with completely different tasks: technicality comes first. So basically they have no time to breath when they skate. No wonder when they are tired, injured or stressed the musicality fades away. It does because at that exact moment it doesn't matter or means so much less. You eihter save your nerve for concentration or, knowing you' re in a top shape and loving to perform aka act- you flare. But it is extremely difficult to deliver perfection from technical, artistic and musical fields all at once.
So sometimes technicality kills the raw artistry or call it beauty naive which we may find so wonderful to observe.

Well, I don't care about his score too- when what happenned at Cup of China last week takes place. Otherwise- I do.
He put himself a task of raising his technical aspect not for the sake of growing his stamina, he's a math kid, he planned that for a score. He also wants to grow in artistic aspect- and he so much does. Watching his performace at Cup of China last week, being totally terrified- I've noticed that he did not forget to make those stares at the audience and the judges and sing and be swept away with the music, he sang, he played, he was engaging. We may or we may not like the style of his LP's but what he did last week was not only a miracle from the overall technical performance- he brought artistry in his pack and he did not forget to share.
Now as per doing it non-stop till his health allows him too. Is it the time for him to let go of big dreams and simply fade away- with each coming season? Are you sure you want him that kind of destiny? It is logical that someone else might get the lead if there would be nothing Yuzuru could offer. But I don't think it is the time to let go. So I rather him come back strong and pursue big dreams. Still. He has time for that.
And he does not do that for himself, I do not agree. He's not that selfish after all.;) He said that this summer: there is no show without anyone watching, the show starts with the audience.

wow love that combination spin where he holds his blade, sit spin, camel spin and biellmann spin (i think i got the order right :D )

i love hwan too , hope he can keep growing like he did so far

and time for some Baby yuzuru, he needs help to get on the podium

Someone stich together the whole program....it is beautiful :points:

I  his looks and softness when he "removed" the mask at 1:57

thank you for sharing alia! I am like you to, I love the moment when he "removes" the mask. Actually I didn't watch the CoC performance again since last weekend because it was so difficult to watch. But seeing those clips in there between his practice skates...I feel so moved. He really did want to skate so bad; it was his choice. When he skates like that, where he sings with the music and his expression shows every emotion, it's like he is only person there - just him and the music...but somehow he still shows a story to us, the audience. He has so strong heart that guides him clearly even if people think it's foolish sometimes. I hope that whatever choice he makes about NHK, he feels resolved and confident in that choice and I want to support him in that way.

Everyone here is amazing - thank you for videos and photos and thoughts and supports you give. :)
