Oh Yuzu...so cute! He seems more like a little boy when he's speaking English and not the "do or die" warrior we see competing on the ice. His voice also seems much higher when he's speaking English than Japanese, or maybe I'm just imagining that.

I still totally think Hanyu-san probably learn his English after copying Javier, who has an unnaturally high voice too... I do think he gets more nervous speaking English in front of the camera compare to speaking to his pals and Orser,even though I can't hear them I thought he looked a bit more natural.

But I am going to be a bad guy here for a second and say that yes, I know learning a foreign language is hard, but can he really communicate all of his thoughts, his worries and his ambitions, in English? From all of the Japanese interviews we've seen, he seemed like such a deep and inward thinker; I was wondering that it must be quite frustrating not being able to convey all his thoughts to those who are right there fighting with him.

Maybe true

I think we need to move our facial muscles more when speaking English than speaking Japanese, especially we have to open our mouth wider or flexibly. When we speak Japanese, our voice sounds more inward, boxy, or thick (my personal impression though)

This is always our problem to understand English aurally before speaking it. So, if you see any Japanese seems not understanding what you say, please just repeat it slow and clear, or paraphrase in easier words. It would be of great help :agree:

It must be so frustrating for a talker like Hanyu to have to work with a small vocabulary in English. I can feel the effort he is making to get the words out.
My English tone is much lower than my Japanese tone. It's the opposite for him...maybe due to nervousness? Anyway, he is getting better. Machida surprises me with his good pronunciation whenever I hear him speak English.
I wonder if Shoma speaks English at all?

Satoko probably can because she was born in America and lived there for a while.
Kozuka also trains in America so his English is okay.
Daisuke Takahashi is also okay.
Narumi has lived in America too so her English is good.

He must have been nervous. Nonetheless, his pronunciation is getting better. By the time it's winter olympics at Pyeongchang, he will be fluent in English.

I am a university English instructor and researcher and increased/decreased pitch is very common among L2 learners, particularly under presser. I myself speak Japanese at a high higher tone than I speak English...

I remember in Japan, I could barely have a normal conversation with anybody... It wasn't that they didn't know English , but they only could speak English with the Japanese vowel system. Incomprehensible to us, and our English to them. Never mind the inability to pronounce the L properly, which very evidently Yuzuru Hanyu hasn't gotten the hang of yet, either.

Having said that, he is definitely improving! :dance: Well done, and nice interview!

It showed a clip Yuzuru was studying at the airport. And something like Yuzuru placed 2nd in highschool overall and he was kind of crossed about that. I am like: "Dude! Your results at highschool was 2nd overall in class and you are not satisfied?"

The TV station just went through all the clips of top athletes and shared some interesting moments.
Hanyu had top grades in everything. What he said was:
"I was 2nd in class once....and I REALLY don't like losing...in anything." He's a second year correspondent student now at Waseda.

the actual word's are (Ni-i ni natta kotoga atte) So, direct translation would be "I have been second" so maybe more than once...but he doesn't like it.
