Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

ahah good to know!! I thought i was going crazy because I didn't think Yuzuru was slow and laboured! Worlds wasn't his best performance but he didn't appear THAT slow. Maybe just on the spins it was quite noticeable that he was slower than his best. And WTT he definitely wasn't slow and the overall quality of his skating was obviously improved compared to worlds.

Though I only watched them on TV and Screen I felt exactly the same, his skating improved at WTT even if there were his lack of training. Not to mention the PW at Wtt EX was magnificent even better in every aspect than Sochi’s to my eyes and I believe he has learned A LOT about his health and limit in the past several years. Maybe less than 25 ice shows in this summer could be reasonable at least it still less than half of the total number of shows that he did last year.

About the picture of Yuzu wearing the blue cover and cap, I think it's a photo from an elementary school sports day where they're playing kibasen (calvary battle). In the game teams split up into groups where one person wearing a cap or headband is carried around almost piggy back style. That person is supposed to try and steal the cap/headband of those on the opposing team. It probably makes more sense to watch it in action.

Sorry, are you Japanese? I need to ask this- why Japanese fans prefer to call Yuzu beautiful and not handsome? I'm a bit confused about it.

Sorry about the late reply, didn't have a chance to read all the comments :hopelessness: No, I'm not and I can only understand conversational Japanese. I believe that in japan, there's generally two categories for good looking men. The "ikemen" which leans more towards the "pretty" or softer type features and the rougher more manly type. Yuzuru falls within the former category, and when they use beautiful to describe him its not really in the context of girly or feminine (like in the west) but rather things like smooth white skin, soft features, lean and tall with a small waist and so forth. Its hard to explain it but its a common thing in Japan/culturally and often used as a compliment

Maybe someone from Japan can explain it better/give further insight? :think:

I believe that in japan, there's generally two categories for good looking men. The "ikemen" which leans more towards the "pretty" or softer type features and the rougher more manly type. Yuzuru falls within the former category, and when they use beautiful to describe him its not really in the context of girly or feminine (like in the west) but rather things like smooth white skin, soft features, lean and tall with a small waist and so forth. Its hard to explain it but its a common thing in Japan/culturally and often used as a compliment

The presenters commented that his come-back strength was showing even back then. They were impressed by the 3A-3T-2T that he did to make up for doubling a jump earlier. The man said that he had the opportunity to have a long interview with Yuzu that year and was really disappointed that due to his low placement, he wasn't able to use it-apparently there was a lot of interesting stuff. He laughed and said, 'that's just my personal memory from that time.'

thanks! it he didnt pop 2 jumps (3loop was popped too right? camera was too zoomed in) he would have been 4th at FP and 5th overall(i know its pointless to talk aboutt " would have" etc since others made mistakes as well but still XD), he is amazing and calm as usual, playing with his layout after mistakes

Thanks for the link and the translation. Reminds me of his 2011 COR LP where he tacked on a 2T to his 3L to compensate for two earlier falls and thus edge Javier by .03 for his first Senior GP title and a place in the GPF. His ability to think fast on his feet is really one of his assets as a competitor. :yes:

Your explanation is so fine. that is what I wanted to explain in detail
One thing if I could say more correctly is that the terms “ikemen” and “katsukoii” are usually used for both types as you mentioned…that “pretty softer” type and “manly rougher” type.
I mean it does not only go for the guys of softer features. the term “handsome man” is preferably used for the latter one in general. I am guessing, probably definition of the word is slightly different in English and Japanese-English. in Japan, as far as I remember “macho and too manly” type has never gotten popular enough by women.
On the other hand, about “pretty and softer” features guys that there always has a tendency to be very liked, unlike western countries.
