Yes yes!!! He's voice is certainly a bit higher pitched when he speaks English, actually I speak with a higher pitch for english than mandarin or Cantonese too

Thank God that they're good friends. It would certainly be painful and stressful to train everyday with someone who is your direct competition and who you also don't get along with

His English has improved greatly and he seems much more relaxed while speaking it. I'm a native English speaker and familiar with many accents. To me Yuzu's accent is purely Japanese with the usual trouble making the "r" sound. I think his intonation might be similar to Javi's because they are both listening and communicating with Canadian coaches, skaters and the general public. For both of them their English is immitating those around them.

Wow! I’m far from digital native, so can’t understand something technical in detail, but I find it too hard making these images. GJ!
Especially, spread eagle 3A is one of my favorite jumps!. I can see the splendid level he had both technically and artistically from this scene. It’s a masterpiece.

I like your positive attitude, oppositely I almost always felt uncomfortable when I saw him speaking English…. maybe because he was just like me when he struggled to speak it, with pronunciation in particular, It caused me to feel that I just watching myself... plus reminding me forcedly of how Japanese people are poor at English and their English pronunciations in general...or may I be a little bit self-conscious? haha. I am learning English now, It’s very fun indeed to have communication with people from all over the world especially the time when to talk with them whom I can share my love and interests with that is mainly for the reason I am here.
Yuzuru was a typical Japanese when it came to English …but by now, I am being jealous of him, every time he is interviewed in English, is getting better and better at it while I am still struggling so much.

Thank yhmafan for your comment! I have the same feelings with you. I know how much he has struggled with the incredible high language barrier between English and Japanese just like most Japanese (and me... I have a long long way to go..yeah, pronunciation is a biggest part…:hopelessness. Not to mention speaking, writing is the same to me. I've not got conficence. (I’m always worried if I can convey the nuance well. You are good at writing. If I write something wrong, would you please tell me?:) .

On the other side, studying foreign language gives me a joy to make progress little by little (very slow..). Yes, it’s fun and refreshing talking with people around the world about yuzu or figure skating! What’s more, it’s inspirational experience.

Yes, yuzu is getting better and better! (Of course you are, as long as you are keeping an effort! Let’s enjoy study together :dance

Here is a link to my latest blog entry. When we watch Yuzu's programs (competitive and ice shows), they are usually under 5 minutes. It's easy to forget that it has taken years and years of hard work to get there. I compiled a few of my favourite "fall" pictures that remind me how hard it is to get there….but Yuzu keeps getting back up again and again. He did not fear of falling from the very first time getting on the ice. His first coach said so in an article. Most of children who get on the ice for the first time start crying from fear, or cannot take their hands off from the rink side bar. But Yuzuru just dashed on the ice, and of course he fell, but got up and laughed, and dashed again and fell again. He never feared, just enjoying the skating. He was born to be a skater.

I cannot imagine the tolls on his body from the practice to perfect the jumps. I remember seeing this section in one of the documentaries, the massage after a practice session where he was saying very painful and also the swollen of his ankle.

Coming back to Japan

Yuzuru´s customised AK240 Gold.

Yuzu customised a music player with Astelle & Kern, AK240 GOLD Yuzuru Hanyu edition, which “looks so cool”(quoting his words in the interview). Obviously it’s gold and with the quote “Challenge, Evolve, and Gratitude with All my HEART”. He said because it is something that he always carry with him, he wants to have a constant reminder of what he finds important carved on it.

this AK24 is gift from the magazine "GETNAVI", who customized the player for Yuzu as a topic project of magazine . When Yuzu received the gift, he was really excited and said "it was really cool!" He also share a lots of opinions about the earphones which may suit the player or he wants to try some day. Anyway, he was happy about the whole project.

In one of the magazines he's pictured listening to an AK player but I think there were pictures of him with his ipod as well in the World Championships.
