Thats a lot for me to follow!!
I agree. Just compare it to for example Romeo and Juliet. Most people are familiar with the story and the concept. But even if they love the story to bits, it doesn't automatically mean that they will love every musical interpretation or every single skating program set to that theme. They may understand it, but they don't have to necessarily like it. And I also don't think that it's impossible to appreciate something just because it's not part of your own culture. Different things appeal to different people. Likewise do I not have to enjoy everything that is inherent to the culture I grew up in. I'm German, yet the only way to make me sit through a whole Wagner opera would be by pointing a gun at my head [emoji3] just as an example
I have to agree, I am absolutely the type who think his seimei programme is really natural to the extent that it feels short and the jumps ended without me realizing it!! I was too engrossed in his movement etc! Hope he'll skate this programme cleanly!

That is why I love figure skating: I get to listen to a lot of classical music without having to listen to the entire concerts, operas, musicals, etc, etc. It's a win-win sport from this point of view, really.;)
I have to admit that there's a lot of classical music or famous music I knew only after following and watching fs! so. Totally agree!!
What a nicely written article. It's good to read that he is so involved with choosing his music. It's probably why he looks so natural skating to Seimei. I absolutely love the strong drum beats and the step sequence just fits so perfectly. Haha but it would not be Hanyu if he didn't max out his base value, for sure his team is going to rework it to a lv 4 [emoji23]
Yea, it's mesmerizing, I'm under Yuzu's spell that I literally could not do anything yesterday aside from looping his programme and thinking about him! :drama:

BTW, does anyone has links to the ost of the onmyouji movie??

For me, one on the main appeals in figure skating, if not *the* main appeal, is the music. I hail from a musical household, not a figure skating one. There is very little music I can not appreciate on some level, and as is with many things, if you hear something more often, you get used to it and usually develop some liking for it. As a life-long amateur pianist, a Chopin SP is a dream, but I never restricted myself to classical music. I adore Asian styles. The Seimei FS music just sends me in a virtual trance and glued to the screen.

If you have never come in contact with such music before, sure, it can seem strange and likely just a random jumble of notes. You do not necessarily need to know all the background to appreciate it more: just listen to the music a few more times will help a lot. Once the brain familiarizes itself with the music, it will gain some appreciation for it, because it starts to connect the dots, discover the melody etc.

HI everyone:

Here is the post about my experience this week in Barrie. Please ignore the amount of fan-girling I did in this post - it was an AMAZING experience. I hope you enjoy.

Thanks for the great fan account/article of the event! I really liked reading that every time Yuzu took off his jacket to reveal his new costume, the crowd gasped and everyone started taking photos, lol.

We're all glad that you had a memorable time in Barrie!

My only comment on costume is that I agree with some that it masks his beautiful arm and body movements....especially I really want to see the victorious foxy magician in its full glory

...the victorious foxy magician in its full glory... That's a great description Alia! I always get a kick out of your posts. Thanks everyone for the links, especially the high quality video of his performance. My feed was so bad I really couldn't enjoy watching it live.

I think the problem with the costume is the fullness, and especially the length, of the sleeves. His hands seem to disappear...

I am in love with the slow part of the program beginning around 2:50. Music and movement is so gorgeous!

Sounds like you had a wonderful experience! I am so envious that you got to see his practice session live because they sounded amazing.
Seems like his 4S is becoming competition consistent but now the 4T isn't as consistent as before. One jump always has to give :scowl:

I can understand why some wouldn't be able to appreciate the music choice as in it's not their cup of tea. It's one of a kind, definitely not one type some people if not most, hear often, especially with that being heavily culture influenced. Me being Asian is no stranger to such kind of music thus probably why to me it's so easy to my ears. Idk, maybe some people should give it a chance if they were keen to understand more about it. By that I don't mean to learn all of the background but probably just by watching it more closely and try to absorb what's happening and feel it. Some people aren't so sensitive towards performance thus we can't really tell them to do so.. that's just my two cents anyway. It's fine if some people don't really favor this type of performance.
For me personally, I think it's so Yuzu and it could be his signature program. The most important is that he's so comfortable with it and that's one factor for him to be able to connect and perform it well.

Tbh, I'm not a fan of Chopin and at first wasn't sure about it but I grew to like the program more and more (well, the fact that it's Yuzu definitely helped ;))

Oh and so many news clip I don't have the time to watch everything haha but thanks for sharing guys!

p.s. anyone else bothered by the audio from autumn classic? when I listen with earphones it only came out from the left side so annoying lol.

I am glad and I am not the only one who thought his OP step sequence were a lot better than in the competition.
I was watching one of the many news video uploaded on dailymotion where they had a skating commentator (sorry I don't know his name) commentating through out the whole FS. (This video) Immediately after the step sequence in which he got level 2, (around 2:40 mark) the commentator commented on it being "a little not enough, maybe needs to move around a bit more" (or that's what my very limited Japanese tells me what he said), so I guess there is really something missing that trained eyes can see right away?

your interpretation is right. the commentator is sano-san.
as you said, he thinks more movements are necessaly, though he did not clear what the step sequence lacks spefically.

^
The step sequence indeed wasn't really filled as in lots of thing happening.. though I personally like how it goes perfectly with the music, I can see how it may seem lacking.

Just read the icenetwork article and lol at the janitors left confused on all the stuff on the seats

"[Hanyu's free skate is] not overly dramatic," he said. "There is a certain humble quality to it that I like. The style of the program and the music builds. It's not in your face. I hate it when it's overly done. It's just nice and clean skating. It speaks for itself.
I like.

Glad that Brian sounded pleased with how things have been going. :agree:

I see some of us worried about his 4toe and I still can't really pinpoint the trouble.. because from the news clip of the practice he nailed it just fine. So it's most probably the nerves and/or the timing/speed. Then there's also that difficult steps into the jump. But I'm sure he'll figure it out and fix it.

I took another look at the stsq trying to figure out what its missing and I realized that he does both the forward and backwards cross rolls (Duh). You aren't suppose to repeat the same step twice, so are the cross rolls counted as the repeated steps or do they allow the differential of forward/backwards? And I think he completed the requirements for the amount of different turns and steps so the level 2 is likely because they're not complex enough; relatively simple steps (done extremely well). Maybe trying to include more one foot steps and turns would help?

 I don't know the rules to stsq all that well tbh.

Upnights and won0066 , I'm glad you guys had a good time! Thank you for the reports~ I was living vicariously through your post won0066

The lp is technically very demanding. He will get tired and his movements likely will become more sloppy. A loose costume helps to hide the sloppiness. He pays more attention to details in practice. But in competitions, it's more difficult to do so.

I don't think he made the costume more loose to hide his sloppiness. I think he did it so the costume is closer to the traditional costume. But i think in competition, a loose costume works better for him than a more fit costume.

Yes, in traditional Japan, clothes tends to be looser.

Your post is always amazing. I love that you still include tiny bits of explanation of figure skating terms. Thank you for the great post. I wish one day I can experience live viewing too! ;)

I read Sean Rabitt's blog. I felt that he's lovely and humble person from the writing. And it's lovely to read snippets of how he got ready for Hanyu Mania and of how Yuzu explained to him of what to do in medal ceremony since it's his first international competition. Both are lovely. <3
"From practices to competition to the medal ceremony -- where Yuzuru was kind enough to help walk me through what to do out there -- I can say I did all of that and more."

To be fair, actually I think he is gonna nail this program fully this season, because he hold it physically better here than I expected. Choreography at the end was powerfull despite he fall on third quad and moved combo even further in program.
So as he gonna get stronger trough year I see him skating to full potential

yeah its so annoying, but wanna know whats more annoying? when you find out that left side of your earhpones is not working:laugh:

With me it's the left side not working, only the right side. I almost thought that my earphones were broken. Lol
