Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

That is my concern. Some of those jumps were absolutely perfect, like the sp 3a, the 3flip, etc., yet he did not max out GOE. I do not know how he can improve on those elements so the GOE they gave him concerns me. We will see what trends we see next season.

He hits the bullet points, so I'm not sure there is a real, serious answer at all.

But OTOH, personally, I think a costume change midair could do it. You know, like Anna in her Rise like a Phoenix Ex. With a superhero costume underneath maybe. Wouldn't have been to out of place during the Prince SP, actually!

Are his GOEs going down because the elements are done worse than before (they aren't), or because he isn't the one with the hardest elements anymore? That gets a perception bonus. The psychology of judges is dangerous.
It makes about as much sense as "has more quads now, must get higher PCS for that". Doesn't sound like logic is a major factor here.

I don't think he can. Honestly, call me biased, but he has the best technique overall among the men. Those jumps during the Worlds were like butter. Butter. Hitting the bullet points. And it is not like we're imagining it, if you listen to commentary it's a consensus. Heck the Russian ESP guy openly said 225, then laughed and said 230? If you compare to others, they are equal or better. I totally understand why he'd want to make sure his GOEs are maxed, it's always been his philosophy but the problem isn't with him and what he's doing, with those particular jumps.

I protest. I think my levitation and then polka mid-jump is a better idea. Though I am willing to compromise. He can jump, rotate half, levitate, change costume, do the polka, change the costume back, resume rotations, land, twizzles. GOE +3

for the life of me i can't understand how yuzu's jumps in his worlds H&L performance didn't get the top GOEs!!! they were the smoothest landings i've seen! they were so light on the ice! and the height and speed of those jumps!!! the difficult entries! seriously i haven't seen anyone do jumps that were that smooth and fluid in a routine, ever! and yet he still didn't get the top GOEs! at this point i'm forced to think that maybe the judges were on crack when they came up with those GOEs because they should have been higher than what yuzu got!

Well listing some argument for and against adding the 4Lz. I'm not sure if I believe in all the judging issues I bring up but I wanted to include them to get a slightly pessimistic list - better safe than sorry ;) Long List...

Additional observation, he is fairly consistent when he has mastered a program (a k a spent a lot of time and gotten a lot of milage), see Seimei. He was practicing 3quads before the 14/15 season (and even perhaps according to Ambesi a bit during even though he was injured) and when he "got" it, it was absolutely fantastic twice in a row. Reason for Boston being perhaps injury + new combo (4S+3T) + mental pressure. So a second season with no completely new elements could bring his consistency and PCS/GOEs way up...

Can we add mid jump karaoke session to that?

My 2 cents on the GOE issue...
I think he doesn't get as much GOE on the combo anymore because it's the combo that he's been using since... A long time ago? For the 3A combos I mean.

I don't know how much that affects the judges psychology, but probably it's kind of a message from the judges that they don't want Yuzu to keep playing it in his "comfort zone".
Sure, Javi also uses the same combo for a long time, but the judges have more expectation to Yuzu as the world's current number 1. Like they know what he can do, and they expect him to bring something new.

I suspect this is the reason why Yuzu is introducing the new 4T-1Lo-3S combo. Perhaps he realized this issue already.
Everytime I watch Shoma's skate (as much as I adore him as Yuzu's kouhai), I always got mad seeing those iffy landings got rewarded high +GOEs... Like how dare you, judges!! But now that I think about it again, maybe the judges rewarded him for bringing "more exciting" elements to his skate, like the 3F combo and such.

The way I see it, Yuzu is currently still deciding whether to introduce new elements like 4Lz, or starting to shift things around, do double 4T then perfect them to maximize his GOE again.

But he can't possibly do both at the same time, since it will take time for him to get use to the new layout. Making too much changes is suicide. I think he also realized how he struggled to adjust to things by adding the new 4Lo and combo 4S-3T at the same time. The whole season (I hate to say this very much) he only got to skate very clean once. And even then, he only got 4 points difference from Seimei, which is technically only a 3-quads program. He might start to think that it's not "that" worth it to introduce 4Lz, and considering to just play with the things he's "more comfortable" with.

Whatever he chooses, whether it is adding 4Lz or play "safer", it will be very interesting to see how things are going to develop next season.

But he can't do a polka on all the jumps anyway. He needs variety after all, this lazy man, who just keeps doing all these spread eagles and back counters :roll5: Costume change on the first jump, Polka on the second. Maybe teleporting from one end of the rink to the other mid jump would also be a possibility. Monster ice coverage! That he has anyway, but okay... so maybe... get out his phone and catch a Pokemon mid jump?

Brian would have fits if his guys did more tanos or rippons.

CBC is showing the competition now and Kurt's comment after that 4tl3s was that he is very creative in saving those landings, lol. Yup, we all noticed that speedy spread eagle, kurt!!

Sigh. True. But that's not enough either, we need more variations. We have karaoke by Emzie there and sorry xeyra but tanos are so passe, he's already done the Rippon after all! Tanos would just get him negative GOEs.
He can pole dance. Instant +3s on that jump

I know, he could reach down and grab his blade like during twizzles!!! Or do like the pairs and do the splits before rotating!!!

Did Kurt say anything about the 1A, and its (quite pretty actually in my opinion) spread-eagle exit?

No matter what he does, he will not get +3 if the judges do not want to give it to him.

My heart hurts so much for him.

He could channel his inner Surya and go with a quad backflip  I bet that's the only reason he talked jumps with Kenzo: research!
