Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

Yeah. Though when the senior field in their country is pretty deep, I can see them stretching their junior career a bit. Nathan actually medals at his first junior world when he was 14/15 but stretch his junior days 2 more season. Looking at the field of Japanese men, it is still astonishing that he managed to have a pretty great senior debut season considering the depth of the senior field, domestically and internationally. He beat Abbott and Kozuka in his 4cc debut


It's normal, they always do this. It was rivalry with takahashi at first, and then with machida, and then now with shoma. If there is another up and comers, I bet everything they will put him up against yuzu too. It was like that with Mao as well. Personally I am not so bothered, because that means Yuzu is the standard, the pinnacle. If anything, I am more bothered on behalf of the younger ones who keep getting compared to him. Because it puts unnecessary pressure on them. Forget the media in Japan lol media in Korea already compared Jun hwan to him too. But well I think as his fan I took it as a compliment, it means he is the guy to beat

I think they are similar in style! Similar physique, generally a softer, more willowy presentation?

Yuzuru's debut season as a senior competitor.

Yuzuru's Grand Prix assignments for the 2010-11 season were NHK Trophy and Cup of Russia. He finished in 4th Place at NHK Trophy and in 7th Place at Cup of Russia. He did not qualify for the Grand Prix Final.

Yuzuru was 4th at the Japanese Figure Skating Championships. He did not qualify for Team Japan for the World Figure Skating Championships. He was an alternate.

Yuzuru's highlight of his debut season as a senior was winning the silver medal at the Four Continents Championships in Taipei, Taiwan in February, 2011.

His happiness at winning this silver medal was short-lived as his hometown, Sendai, and the region of Tohoku was hit by the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011.

I recall that Button did talk about yuzu a bit at Sochi. It was one of those fireside, in studio, conversations after the fact. They really enjoyed the Japanese official's reaction to his score in the kissn cry too. I would be interested in his opinion of him now, 3 years later and so very different from Sochi.

topic: I read somewhere speculation that because the Pyeongchang rink will be used for speed skating as well, that the ice will be "soft" which doesn't favor figure skating? What makes softer ice, and how do figure skaters even train for variable ice "softness"...? And this means the ice quality in 4CC will be different than the ice in Olympics?

I just had a mini heart attack, Youtube recommended me a video and it was about the old "Yuzuru is getting married" rumour. They reuploaded it recently so it said "january 2017" and i initally thought the rumour was going around again until i saw that next to his name it said (21) :shocked:
I knew about the rumour but didn't really see it. I get why he was mad lol, they were pretty specific and everything, they only lacked a wedding date

I heard about the rumour last year, but do not know any Japanese, so all the details escaped me. I assume they named her? He has given them nothing this year, he was rarely in Japan, so maybe they needed more mileage on old news. The months up to and after PC are only going to get worse...

Am I the only one that sees basically not much similarity between young Yuzuru and Jun Hwan other than both being skinny asian teenagers in bowl cuts? It all seems a bit far fetched for me. Just like when people group Yuzuru and Boyang together just because they are great jumpers, although different. Jun Hwan comes across as more controlled yet a bit stoned face for me, while Yuzuru was wilder at his age; and they are certainly not similar in jump technique (especially at the axel). The similarity for me is body build and that's it. Maybe I'm just too picky.

I agree with you. Jun Hwan's skating is more controlled and calmer, also his jumping style is very different from Yuzuru's. Jun Hwan's style reminds me a bit of Yuna's, it's fluid with great height and distance but he doesn't 'attack' like Yuzuru. Not even their body type are similar imo, Jun Hwan is already taller than Yuzuru and his thighs are bigger -Yuzuru has a lean body stucture while Jun Hwan not really.

To my eyes, they move in a similar way. Last season Jun Hwan resembled young Yuzuru a lot... and now he resembles older Yuzuru a bit. Yes, he's more controlled than Yuzuru was at that age, but Yuzuru is more controlled now too. They have similar sort of movement to my eyes, which might be partly because of having the same coaches. To me, they both also exhibit similar kind of innate elegance to their movement, although Yuzuru looks more aetheral when he's going for a light style.

I do not see much similarity between them either. Jun hwan is much more controlled with his movements compared to 15 y.o yuzu. I do not even see that much physical resemblance, to be honest. And I do not see a resemblance between them now, in real time, either.

I cannot think of anyone who resembles yuzu in jumps or skating... at least off the top of my head... although yes, sit spin positions are similar, but so many people do them now.

It's not young Yuzu that I think he resembles actually. It's Yuzu right now (since Yuzu became more controlled too), apart from the jumping. The spins and the arms in between the elements, somewhat? Basically what Moria Polonius said. Haha, beat me to it.

Performance style? Weir is the closest for me. Jumping style, I don't think anyone jumps like him, his ease and flow on his quads and 3A is something else. Most who jump quads give the impression of power and it looks muscled. His is just easy and effortless. The closest I can think of is actually... Javi? But maybe this impression is more because they share the same coach and have that similar entrance to their 4S lol.
