On Dec 21th JFS announced that Sochi Olympic gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu will withdraw from Japan Figure skating championships which will be held from 22th in Osaka, where he was going to compete for his five consecutive titles. He developed influenza on 15th, then complicated pharyngitis and has been diagnosed to be in need of another week of rest with medical treatment.
His comment through JSF:
For all the supporters, those who involved with figure skating, sponsors and people in the press, and those who were looking forward to Japan Figure skating championships, I am sorry for causing you anxiety and trouble. For the moment I would like to focus on taking rest and treatment to recover my health.
According to NHK news he still has a fever now. Hope he will take a good rest and get well soon.

Poor Yuzuru. Get well soon. But maybe a bit of bed rest will do wonders.

No huge surprise. Marin honda was sick at GPF and being on planes, buses etc., together, maybe more people got sick too but he has not recovered enough. Glad he keeps eye on the prize and cares for his body now that he has nothing to prove.
I guess Brian will have a surprise Christmas at home this year.

Health comes first! I was also looking forward very much to cheer for him, but it seems to be a wise decision. It is better to rest now than to be injured/ill at 4CC or at World Championships. Get well soon, Yuzuru!

Yuzuru has a history of being sick/injuried at National. He got surgery right after the National 2 years ago. And last year he skated at National with a foot injury. NHK at 7:00 PM reported he is still having high fever now. So it's good that he knows his limits and put his health first.

He just can't catch a break, can he? 
I'm very glad he's withdrawn but he must be very poorly if he has. This sounds like at least another week of recovery, a flu is no joke, especially with his asthma. And this is going to eat at him, it's just how he is and the lost training. His kuyashii all right. Hang in there Yuzuru, your health is important and you'll be back up and skating in no time.

Even though the flu is nothing to scoff at, I'm glad its not an injury. Better he gets it now, gets some rest and builds his immune system for 4CC and Worlds. Remember when he got the flu after 4CC in 2013, Worlds wasn't very fun then.
Is JSF gonna make an exception for 4CC and Worlds teams? They have to right? It would be stupid not to. Also glad he won't be forced to compete at AWG.

With Hanyu's WD it's almost certain that Shoma will be the new national champ. I'm relieved honestly. I'd rather Hanyu WD than skate sick and risk losing his title and injuring himself. In the past I think he would have competed but I think he's learn his lesson after the whole skating at worlds injured. He has a long term goal ahead. There's always next year to get back the national title. Ashley and Gracie keep going back and forth as national champions.

Exception? There is no need to make one. JSF can allow the skater to compete if there is an inevitable reason that caused the withdrawal, and this definitely counts as one. They are not going to suddenly turn stupid.
In any case, I didn't think World's team was decided only using Nationals result? I thought GP results and other factors were also taken into account?

Hmmm... if Yuzuru is not national champion...
...does that mean he will be free to choose a different GP event than NHK next season?!

I think that the rules state that you must compete at Nats in order to qualify, except in cases where it was justified to skip? And then, considering his results, they are free to give him a spot.
No idea about the NHK but I am not sure he'd want to skip it, considering it's his home country. It will probably depend on other things now, including Shoma. I like him at NHK, I just want him to skip SC but I wouldn't care if he changed both.

He will go to World for sure. And I hope he'll go to 4CC as well. JSF will not prevent their best skater from going, especially since Worlds 2017 will decide how many spots Japan will get for the Olympics... and Yuzu and Shoma are the best hope for keeping the 3 spots (if the 3rd do well too of course). I believe the federation is aware of Yuzu's wish.
But I'm confused about your question... what does the choice of GP NHK have to do with Nationals? I don't believe they'd choose Shoma instead of Yuzu for NHK. Not an elegant way to say this, but, Yuzu is the golden goose, not Shoma...
