Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

I was having fun with maths and Excel the other day, after seeing someone do something similar to Shoma's FS at 4CC, so I calculated the possible scores of the SP and FS using the maximum PCS and GOEs he's gotten for each element so far this season (the only cheating I did was use the SP 4S-3T maximum GOE for the FS, since, you know, what 4S-3T in the FS amirite?).

I used score sheets from the GP series and 4CC, but not Autumn Classical.

This is just something for fun speculation but this is what came out.

Of course, the PCS would rise if he skated everything clean, and so might the GOEs if he has a good first half (and lands his quad-combo in the second!).

Anyways, prayer circle for Worlds.

I think Yatagarasu agrees with you that Javi is not to be discounted at all actually. The reason why "although not a perfect skate" sounded weird is because the number of quads in Javi's Worlds LP vs Yuzuru's 4CC LP seemed to be highlighted as the main reason for those respective scores (216 vs 206). When in reality, Javi's was a skate-of-his-life 3-quad performance, and Yuzuru's was a far-from-perfect-although-counterintuitively-impressive performance XD

Yep. Maybe that's just because I consider the two similarly impressive but that's my bias loudly speaking, because even a 2S1Lo H&L get me repeating everything 200 times, i'm aware I'm not a judge lmfao. Number of quads are not the only reason of why I mentioned these skates, I should've elaborated more. I just wanted to highlight that a clean Javier, with his usual layout, that didn't change that much since last season, and with skate-of-his-season PCS and GOE bonus, is still capable of beating Yuzuru in an off day, as any other top man.

Thank you for the link! :thank:

How adorable he is! :luv17: I enjoyed the video of the young girl's performance posted by Marin earlier, as well. Those kids make me smile   Yuzu is an inspiration to younger skaters! :hap85:

Thank you. Exactly this is the one video I have seen on Fan fest pages before. Both the young boy or the young girl use the same music Seimei of Yuzuru, even the choegraphy looks like Yuzuru's. I remember seeing also some young girls and boys in Japan and China who have skated to Seimei too. They are all inspired by Yuzuru.

I'm worried about worlds. I really want Hanyu to win. I feel like he's lost a bit of confidence in his performances. The 4S combo is killing him. If he keeps on popping then I'm afraid he's looking at another loss at worlds. Ever since the loss at Boston I haven't seen Hanyu skate with the same self assuredness. His foot injury did more than just effect him physically it also effected him mentally hence the falling and popping on the 4S combo. I feel like Hanyu needs to win worlds this year in order to get his mojo back. I fear what another loss will do to him.

I feel the opposite after 4CC. He was fierce in that LP, especially IMO after he made that mistake on the 4S3T.
Not sure I'd agree about not skating with the same self assuredness at all either... for me, it was there in his NHK & GPF SPs. Not so much in the LPs back then, but combining the fact that SP are just that, shorter, with his later start to the season it makes sense.

And if he loses again at worlds, then he loses. It would suck for him but he would survive it. I don't think there is that much reason to be worried for him right now. But of course that's JMO too.

Also, he increased the difficulty of both programs so of course there's a lack of comfort with the layout to consider.

Agreed. Because of both late start to the season and upping difficulty by a lot, he's been fiddling with different steps and entries into jumps and choreography with that LP a lot more at this time of the season compared to previous seasons. Usually he'd have time to adjust it based on ice show feedback, but he didn't have the luxury this time. I thought that mistake on 4S3T released something in him :D Warrior mode! He was holding back a little in terms of range of upper body motion, but I don't think it's due to lack of confidence. Not at all. Peaking experiment may be working! My fingers are crossed.

He seemed to be more determined this time than I've seen all season. The fire is back and I think that kind of took over his skating in the 2nd half of the LP so it was less delicate. However it was exciting to watch and it was wild and free, like he was on a mission rather than being gently connected to the music. I think like earlier posters said, if he could get just the right balance between the two attitudes it would be magical.

Regarding his jumps, they did seem to be less effortless than usual 'Yuzu quality' recently but perhaps that's due to the flu and foot injury

I think his loss to Nathan was, in the long term, a very good thing. It definitely lite a fire under him :o:

I personally didn't see that much fire and determination in his performance when he performed H&L. He started already a bit restrained yet softly connected to the music. Then after pop he just fell out of performance a bit and focused strongly on nailing things and jumping. It was a right thing to do since he wanted to win. He needed to tone down his performance and focus on execution. And then after skate and final pose he showed his determination aka Worlds 2014. Yet I didn't see the fire in him like at Worlds 2012. I think his nailing jumps and calculating things might leave some fiery impression on his skate. Still it ended up to be a very calculated skate in the second half, Imo.
I'd rather watch him perform without additional stress, so he'd finally show an originally intended program of his own, with expression and subtle idea rightful and unique to this program. I think it's very important to him to bring out the sense and his intended self behind this free.
A similar effect happened at Worlds 2014. He focused on jumps and was determined to leave as less mistakes as possible. Yet the program itself was left behind.
I hope he manages to balance things out at Worlds. I care about his winning only if it brings him the happiest happiness and if that's his wish. As a fan, I'll be prepared for performance sacrifice for the sake of his win.

What scares me most about Worlds is that Nathan has skated five consecutive clean programs till now and is getting better scores every time. So now no errors are allowed, most of all in SP.
But I think it is a good thing for Yuzuru not to be clear favourite for the Worlds like the last time.

I agree with what people have been saying since that YOLO!3A: Yuzu is very dangerous for his rivals at World's right now. His level of kuyashii might have given birth to a satellite to accompany Planet Hanyu, and they can align with their parent star for World's...
