MVS: He can take his Olympic medal, lift it up very high because he’s indeed deserving of it. It’s a grit, a consistency, a cleanliness in his technique, impressive. Choreographically impressive too. Wonderful. There isn't anything that you could turn around and say “Oh, he failed this, he failed that.” No! The boy was wonderful. Landing of the jumps (literally ‘finalization’ so it could mean exit), air position, speed at the spins, impeccable choreography, impeccable transitions. Wow! Now, regarding the scoring that you talked about there, Clayton, from Javier. It’s what you said, everything can happen. If Javier makes too many errors these 11 points can be diluted too. I think it’s complicated because 11 point is a big difference. And I, personally, thought that they ‘fattened’ the scores of Javier Fernandez. Of course he’s also a wonderful skater, this is indisputable, But .. But I felt a little, not that they pulled for him, but that they valorized him more. Something that they don’t do for this boy. When this boy makes errors they destroy him… lmfao sudden change of topic Wonderful, congratulations!

C: Yuzuru Hanyu keeps applauding. He’s already taken his bear. He’s now waiting for his scores which will be extremely high.

That one guy seems a bit pissed. :rofl: I just wanted to share for the giggles, and I think we rarely have here translated latin american commentary. Maybe they’re clueless and think that his PCS should be closer to his technnical score because they don't know that there's a PCS ceilling since, for me, his PCS was fine Or they might just be absolutely pro-GS commentators making a constructive critique on the true value of PCS in the age of IJS, you never know. ;)

I was curious and searched about the commentators and the Marcus Vinicius guy is very involved with Artistic Roller Skating, he’s a judge, coach, choreographer, owner of an academy and technical director at the Brazilian Skating/Hockey Federation, but the absolute highlight is that he judged a completely cheesy “Ice Dancing With the Stars (?)” segment at a very popular Sunday TV show in 2006 ala Yuna’s Kiss & Cry and I'm laughing at this as we speak because I never knew this existed. He commented Sochi and will also do commentary for Pyeongchang. The other guy, Clayton, is just a general narrator for a lot of sports.

After Sochi's Olympics, Sportv started to broadcast Worlds. And this year 4CC was broadcasted too. (only part of the competition, like Worlds)
The commentators got a lot better. The first time I watched they didn't know anything about the skaters and sometimes they were mean to some skaters. Now it's nice to see how much they are enjoying it.:yes2:
And what I like the most is that they stayed quiet during the program.

Can I just say how much I enjoy the fact that its not only his fans who think Yuzu wuzrobbed? :laugh: So many commentators thought so too (whether its PCS or GOE or both) :)

HL: [Hanyu] has to start this group, and all those thousands of fans here from Japan can finally hold the flags up again. Hotels have been sold out for almost two years [whu?] because of the Japanese fans. Yuzuru Hanyu. One mistake in the short program, he’s currently fifth.
JP: he has some catching up to do, four quads planned. Quad loop. Quad salchow. Triple flip. Number three (he means third quad): quad salchow, triple toeloop, and it’s all completely flawless. And number four, quad toeloop. Triple axel, double toeloop. Second triple axel, triple salchow.
Unbelievable, and look at him standing there as conqueror of this program, Com-Plete-Ly without mistakes, FOUR quadruple jumps, with TWO triple axels in the second half. Tears cascade down the cheeks of the Japanese ladies. The ice, of course, is full with gifts and bears, with pooh bears, that’s his [they both giggle] yes, that his trademark. Yes, but Haya, I think this is the best program I’ve ever seen.
HL: Yes, uh, yes!
JP: everybody is stunned speechless. I see the judges sitting there, I see the official assessment committee sitting there (?), I see Rafaella Locatelli (sp?) sitting there, watching this with mouth agape. This is truly a unique feat, 126 points, which indeed is out of balance (during the warmup they talked about the tech score and for performance being out of balance nowadays, especially with the men), but, well, what can you do?
HL: it’s not like he can hold back.
JP: No, of course not. This has happened so fast. The best program ever by Yuzuru Hanyu, and what a champion, to be able to perform under this kind of pressure, when you’re fifth! And you have to skate first, to be able to perform like this then!
HL: that man needs it, he was completely focused on that, you could see that, that restrained expression on his face at the end, he just knew he was going to do this, he had to, he knew, I’m going to do it, and he DID it.
JP: Who is going to beat this, or even get the same score? I’m very curious.
(they watch the replay) Here everything so completely clean.
(next bit is somewhat paraphrased, they talked through another at some point, but this is the general gist)
HL: Here that loop, and that’s it too, it’s all perfectly executed, high into the plusses, incredibly beautiful performance, everything from transitions and nicely blended with the choreography.
JP: and what are you going to give for the components? Are you going to give 10s here already? He kind of has really earned it, especially the performance, it’s all just flawless, without flaw in the execution, as if this is just a training-run.
HL: Perfection. AND in balance, technically not just what he does, but also how he does it, they way he skates, technically.
JP: and how it’s build, there are no blocks of four or five jumps, […. Cannot quite catch this]
HL: Now, well, world record.
JP: this has to be a world record.
HL: [… world record score] in the FS of course already is on Hanyu’s name. He did that at the GPF, 219.48 That’s beaten for sure.
JP: what will this be? It was 125 technical score.
HL: so this will probably be over 220.
[they burst into laughter listening to Orser and Hanyu analyzing the skate] Trust the trainer, you train hard.
JP: 223 points, 97 points components. And this is the score of the FS, not even the combined score. 223 points, heavens,
HL: four points above his own world record.

HL: Oooooooh, such sensation here in Helsinki.
JP: 321 points total, so that’s a world record too, I guess, it has to be [ehm…].
HL: almost has to be, well, he was rather behind in points after the SP, we will look it up. It almost doesn’t matter, because FINALLY Yuzuru does it, he also peaks at the final competition of the season.

They continue to mention Yuzuru during the rest of the men’s final group, of course, how hard it is for the skaters to go after that world record, after having heard the audience go wild. And they hadn’t honestly expected anyone anyone to get so close to Hanyu’s score, but they agreed that the podium was as it should be.

iirc some commentators expected even higher scores for the FS. And for SP also.

Really, 4CC? Do you have the video? SporTV is a very popular and big sports channel, more so than ESPN and FoxSports here, I think, so I'm suprised. It's interesting that they care to broadcast some of the most important international events.

And about staying quiet during the program, that's the biggest plus lmfao :laugh2:

I remember one of his interviews about a year ago, talking about Nathan and four quads. He had seen all of this coming of course. I am so happy he insisted with his plan.
 
I wonder: do other countries make their medalist wear their medals everywhere for post-competition press conferences/media blitz? I don't actually follow sports that deeply to actually know if this is common everywhere or if it's just a Japanese thing.

I think the commentator is Hans van Zetten, who has a rather Dutch pronounciation of not-Dutch names, and he’s a general sports commentator. Also, it really is a recap for the general sports program, not just a figure skating program recap, so he explains a lot of stuff.

Yes it can, everything is possible in figure skating, because everything depends on the moment supreme. And so he’s currently fifth, this Yuzuru Hanyu, 22 years old, Olympic champion in Sochi, he was also the World champion that same year, but since then, always second behind the Spaniard. 98.39 he brings with him going into this, and he starts his FS, Hope and Legacy. The quad Rittberger! Not the salchow, not the spot, the Rittberger! [so… I think what he says is the quad loop! Not the salchow, not the toeloop, the loop! Why do jumps still have different names, it’s so confusing!] Yes! That’s what he showed here. His first quad jump. Then another quad jump, landed flawlessly. That was the quad salchow. Then the pirouette, look at that, the Biellman, named after [blablabla about Denise B.].

Then a step sequence. Ten years ago, these would be done at the end of the programs, because you’d do the most difficult movement early on in the program. But this man from Japan already does them early on, so saves a lot of jumps for the second half of the program. That’s a sign of power and might. Yeah, triple flip. Now he’s in the second half of the program, everything he shows in difficulty will get a 10 % bonus now in the technical score.

Quad salchow in combination with a triple toeloop! Perfect! Wow! He’s already at 62.68 points, and another toeloop, quad, yes indeed, that’s his fourth quad in this program, it’s unbelievable! Forward, that’s the axel, triple, and nice, very pretty, the double toeloop (I’m reeeeaaaally confused now, because he actually calls it a toeloop here, not a spot?), and he even raised his arms during that jump, that’s an extra feature. Again the triple axel, loop, and a triple salchow, it’s a combination of three jumps, he’s allowed to do that once.

He’s in a flow, this cannot go wrong anymore, you’d say. Time and space don’t have any meaning anymore if you’re performing like this in this 4.5 minute FS. Look, wonderfully in balance in the choreographic step sequence. Ad now we’re going to the twelfth element, a triple lutz, landed feathery light, and then the final element, Yuzuru Hanyu, fantastic!

And look at his eyes, LOOK, there this man stands, he displays everything that’s possible. The whole of Japan is going outside (eh?). Yes, standing ovation, it’s unheard of what’s happened here in Helsinki. He owns the world points record, 219 points, and look at what’s happening, what’s being thrown onto the ice, and he stands there as a ruler, he thanks the audience. Look at it, how ‘grand’ that happens (he is referring to Hanyu making the large arm signs and bowing, it’s not meant disrespectfully).

Yes, it’s a unique moment, the best FS I’ve ever seen in the men’s figure skating. This is even better than what he showed in Sochi, much better. The difficulty level has gone up, to four quadruple jumps. Well, a lot of children are needed to get all those dolls (he says poppetjes, it means small dolls, I don’t think he’s aware of the pooh bear thing, lol) off the ice, and he falls into the arms of his trainer, Brian Orser, because he trains in Toronto, Canada [bla bla Brian Orser]. Look, at we’re looking back at this fantastic moment, the timelesslness of this FS, the combination. And those landings, nothing deep, highly landed, large skate after the jump [uhm, drawing a blank as to the translation of uitrijboog, he is referring to the long bit after the jump where the skater can just glide out with the free leg, like really in balance], that’s how you keep speed, and it also saves energy, you don’t need to speed up again, you keep speed, you’re in the ideal route then.

This was his ending pose, and yes, he thanks his audience and his trainer, Brian Orser. To the right is Tracy Wilson. This is unique, what this 22-year-old from Sendai shows here. [he listens to Brian and Yuzu talking, and translates some of their comments] Yes I know I worked hard, he realizes that now, because as figure skater you have to work EXTREMELY hard to accomplish this, and not everybody can skate as well as he can, but if you want to accomplish anything, in every sport, then working hard is the basis. You have to work hard, repeat it every day, and he comes at 223.20, yes, that’s a new world record, and look at his face, he beat his own record by 3.72 points, 223.20, yes indeed, and then he gets to a total of 321.59 and he takes the lead. Can that still be beaten? Is that score, the total score, beatable? He is happy, Yuzuru Hanyu.

Also the way he holds his medal at the beginning like " Don't take it away from me " :laugh::biggrin:

If a child want to touch his medal, I believe he won't mind though :laugh:

So sad that only children and their innocence can get close to him without getting their butt kicked by gorilla security guys.
