Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

On a related note, I'm trying to figure out how much Korean I would need to learn to not be totally out of my depth in Pyeongchang, can anybody offer any tips?

Not a lot in all honesty. Korea is fairly foreigner friendly.
Learn how to read Hangul (which is hella easy you can learn it in a day), learn a few general travelling phrases (where is ...) and maybe a little food ordering stuff and money stuff. You'll be fine

I don't want to say this but I think WTT is the most useless competition of the season. I don't get why they're so serious about it. They even force skaters to compete there. It's absolutely annoying. But oh well hopefully Yuzuru can turn this into a good experience.

Omg this is Wednesday and I'm still HIGH from Yuzu's glorious FS on Saturday, help.....
I still cannot stop replaying his program, and so far I have watched it like about 30 times. :shame:
(Please tell me I'm not the only one)


But anw, after watching it for the xx time yesterday, I just realized something.
There's this step in the choreo sequence where Yuzu moved his leg following the subtle beat of the music.
It happened after the hydroblade and before Ina Bauer.
It's like veeeerryyy subtle movement, for only a split second, but when I caught this I was like "WTH did I just see... Did he actually do that???"

He did, and I was, once again, immensely impressed with the level of detail he put into his skating.
(not that I didn't know it before, but it's just that moment when he still can make me go , even after all this time)
GOAT is probably "debatable" as of now, but I think everyone can agree that currently, Yuzuru is the most complex active skater in the world.
Oh Yuzuru Hanyu, can you be any more amazing?

Mmmm, not sure, I've never been to a country where I don't speak the language, so I'm not really sure what essential phrases are. But it might be good to learn basic Hangul (the writing system) so you can read signs. It's actually a really simple writing system, and depending on how good you are at memorizing it could be learned in an afternoon. Though of course you'd need practice to read it at a good speed. Other than that, you probably want to learn basic phrases such as "Thank you", "Do you speak English?", "Where is ___?" etc. If you have a list of simple phrases I could probably help you translate them, though there's probably also hundreds of online guides for tourists.

I have many colleagues who are Korean and they all share the same tips below to make your life easier:

1. Asian will take it easier to mange their trip in Korea because their travel and tourism industry allow them to communicate in Japanese and Chinese as well (so who had learn these languages can definitely survive there) . For Winter Olympics they are building new infrastructure and put road sign in English so that it will be easy for you to find the direction

2. You can book all your train ticket online before you go so you just get plane to reach Seoul and get to KTX (Railway) to Pyeongchang

3. You still l have 1 year to prepare language for your Korean trip, but their advice is to just screenshot the name of the location/hotel/street name you want to go. Hangul is easy to read but to pronounce is another thing

4. Rent a Wifi Egg (propably from SK telecom) at the airport so you have wifi all the time to use google map and Google translate

5. To add to your authentic Korean experience, do try to pick up some of the common Korean words and greetings! Common words would be “Annyeong-ha-sae-yo” (‘Hello’ in Korean) and “Kam-sa-ham-ni-da” (‘Thank you’ in Korean’)

6. Be brave. We Asian won't eat you .

I actually think the same thing about WTT but...
I'll let it pass because we might get some fluff moments and maybe a very good LGC it makes me sad that he was forced to go, though...

Went to Seoul once! Just adding on to the others, it would be really helpful if you know numbers in Korean by heart, when you order food.
1 = hana
2 = dul
3 = set

The rest I think can google translate and show them the translation. I dunno about Pyeongchang, but people in Seoul are generally okay with it (I wouldn't say they're the friendliest people, but they're definitely not rude )

I kinda agree that knowing Korean numbers is useful but mostly because there are two kinda you use for different things x_x which can be confusing. But generally learn native korean numbers, and learn currency numbers.

for 4cc I went from seoul to gangneung via bus and to the arena via taxi. The taxi is pretty cheap, if you are doing this you just need to say 'gangneung ice arena' and 'bus terminal' to the taxi drivers. The only thing i'd suggest is either go a day early or book you bus ahead of time on the website because the bus from seoul and back was the biggest pain of the whole trip as the seats were sold out and I was pushed to a later bus or at risk of having no bus at all. the only issue with this right now is that the website for the buses are only in korean and for a country with great internet korean websites are an absolute mess and tend to only work fully with IE.

In the green room he was complaining that it was going to be a very high level competition: I think he's too tired for that :/
I feel bad and like a greedy fan because i really want to see him there, so i can enjoy his programs without too much stress but i'd rather have him resting a bit more... I want him as healthy as he can be for the next season

New episode of Ice Talk ft. Charlie White to comment on Worlds! Something that he said that I loved is that he always tried to find something positive in the interviews even for skaters who had a bad performance. It reminded me of him telling Yuzuru he could still win this (Thanks for that, Charlie!).

Around 20:16, he said Yuzu's FS was his top moment of the event. He said he is just breathtaking, he makes everything seem easy and possible. The way about him is so inspiring he feels like he could run a marathon or land a 4S He said the words to describe that FS were "ease and grace".
He said his ability to deal with the pressure and demand for excellence has improved as he's matured. He was very happy for him because he thinks that moment is going to stay with him for a long time, it was special. :yes:
Jackie acknowledged his ability to "figure it out", since he delivered even after he didn't have the perfect practices he had last year.

I love Charlie's attitude, I hope he will continue to work with the skating media. And I've been also loving the Ice Talk podcast, they're by far the best skating podcast running at the moment thanks to Jackie Wong the only one that is worth it actually, to be honest, from the ones I've seen It would be even greater if it was in video format but the podcast is also fine. :hap93:

Does anyone remember where is that news piece about Seto Daiya, that swimmer which apparently is a Yuzuru fan, talking about him? It was way back. I'm searching at dailymotion but I can't remember the exact date and couldn't find it with the search function of this thread. Thanks!

I remembered it because there was this small section today with him and another guy (maybe a swimmer too?), talking about the 1994 generation athletes again and I'm guessing he choosed again Yuzuru from the whole batch. I'm not sure though, i'm just exercising my deduction skills developed after intensely watching japanese skating news. I'm probably wrong though.

Now I feel so bad for him too. I still have hope that he will still enjoy it It's less stressful and important than Worlds and doesn't have so much influence on the next season. Does he have busy schedule until the competition? Can he at least have some rest this week ? please, please, please...
