Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

I was expecting a whiff of a panther after yesterday... :p
But your nails look gorgeous!

I have the off season to experiment :P (requiem is my next project tho)
Besides, I'm trying to behave. I don't want to be remembered as the person who ruined/corrupted the Yuzuru Hanyu fanfest (although I fear it might be too late for that. Still, I'll work hard so that's not my only legacy here 😂)

I don't know the last time there has been this much fanfare for a male skater, but I do think on the female side Kwan and Yuna and Mao rival him a bit for anything like it over the past few decades. Not sure how many Kwan or Yuna fans followed them all over the world to their competitions though. And of course I think having a mascott like Pooh helps a lot too. And yes, he has an infectious personality along with his amazing skating abilities. That goes without saying but I don't mind saying it ;).

This! Sometimes it is not just about the medals and results, but there is also that X factor that helps an athlete have better general public perception/following/popularity too. I'm not American, but I have this impression that Kwan and Cohen has much higher/bigger fanbase, popularity and public awareness compared to Tara Lipinski or Sarah Hughes (despite the latter two winning OGM and Kwan/Cohen did not). Another example like in Japan would be how Mao Asada, imo, is more popular than Shizuka Arakawa or Miki Ando, eventhough Arakawa won OGM and world title and Miki being a 2X WC. You can't really force the public to like/support someone, despite how many achievements/awards/titles/results they have. If they don't care they just won't care, though having titles/medals/results will help the public to care/be aware more.

In my opinion, Yuzuru has that X factor and likability about him that just make people want to root for him. It is not necessarily explainable or describable

Interview translation with Yuzuru and Shizuka from Iron_Klaus twitter. Some other snippets here and here.

Edit: Still no news about any summer shows for Yuzuru, yes?

This part right here, he really seem to change his mindset about the olympics, and it actually makes me feel at ease (?) somehow. I think this is the first time he really said/sort of implied that he did not aim for second OGM and there is more to his skating career than that (that it was not his main goal). I really like what he said here, he seems to have matured a lot :luv17:
quoting from iron_Klaus translation
At every competition, I reaffirm that the Olympics isn't everything in terms of what a skater can achieve through his career. Right now, the most important thing for me is to raise the ceiling of what I can do. This season I have learned that avoiding injuries is the fast track to improving my core strengths in skating

About ice shows, should wait until late April/early may the latest, I think if by then they have not announced/confirmed his participation yet, I am inclined to think he won't go to FaOI. If they have had Yuzu's confirmation, they would have had announced it already, there is no reason to hold back the news - because Yuzu = ticket sales. The fact that we still hear no news until now means he/his team is still undecided? :scratch2:

Yeah, I liked that too!

Can someone explain to me what the Ten-Yuzu thing is about from last year? I had a whiff of it during some months ago but I didn't come across it for sometime until today when I was going through Hanyu videos.

Please tell me this is like one of those things some radical fans do
when there's even a subtlest slight against their skater, because I like both Hanyu and Ten, and can't imagine anything out of it.

Oh honey, it is not a pandora box you would want to open here in this thread :p

I'll refer you here for details and heated discussion

And we'll be thankful if you never ever mention it in the group. It's all long gone by.

No. no. Any such utterance shall not be seen, at least not from me. Just didn't know where to look. So thanks.

PS: didn't know there was a long discussion here either, considering how the thread numbers fly off like a bullet train, hard to catch up.

TV asahi is promoting its new Mobile App for viewing the cheering section at WTT on your phone while watching the performances on TV. (japan only I think) For a sample they show Yuzu cheering for Satoko at WTT. He's so concentrated on her program that he's not cheering very much! I'm looking forward to seeing all Yuzu's reactions to other performances of team Japan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGl8-SjsJgY

I wanted that badly for 4CC - I really want to see Brian's reaction to the layout changed on the fly. :)
But the upshot it so many people will spend time watching Yuzu watch his teammates skate...

sorry, but the one thing that stands out is the commentator going "this is the one he's been waiting for because he's not had a performance like this since he won the Olympic gold medal".... whut? I mean, like.... whut??

IKR? I guess everyone was comatose during 2015.
