Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Yeah, he already mentioned in every interview that he cannot jump without pain if he is not taking painkillers. Hard to imagine him going forward with Worlds.

Even though there was the media rush, he only chose to do interviews/press conferences, and he has not been on any variety shows (Japanese athletes frequent these shows very very often, whether they are sports related or not, I like watching them :)). Since he must be the most coveted guest now (has been since Sochi), I believe he specifically set out rules for TV appearances and such. Selfishly I would love to seem him go have fun on these shows, but I know he has his principles he would like to follow. (I had thought if he got gold in Pyeongchang he might started going, but maybe not)

He may feel the responsibility to keep the 3 spots, but I think just like the team event, even though he held his national pride in high regards, I think he will choose to take care of himself first.

I wouldn't have it any other way! I think he really has longevity and a successful season next year in mind. I really support him taking care of himself.

The fact that a third skater can't fight for his own place tells me they don't need the third spot. Not that JSF would see it that way ;)

It's frustrating, because we can understand risking the ankle for gold, but risking it for a spot seems a bit too much.

Yuzu has no public appearances today, so I hope he's taking this time to get examined. --Then we will know for sure once the test results come out. I'm pretty sure he won't go to Worlds. He's done his best to get Team Japan maximum spots since he first appeared at Worlds in 2012. He deserves a rest if he wants one.

lyrichord, stormblade, thank you for your clear explanation :thank: I don't know why but I had misinterpreted the rule as the podium finishers were guaranteed 3 spots. (So Canada or Spain had only 2 spots for some years while I was thinking they had 3)

To be really honest, the world 2019 is going to be held in Japan but I suspect if JSF will mind 3 spots this time. I know it sounds unfair and just my opinion though.

On the spots, if a country only sends 1 skater they can earn 3 spots if they win, right? Similarly if that one skater places in top 13 then that would earn them two spots - this is how Dabin choi earned two spots for the South Korean ladies this season.

Either way, I think Yuzuru deserves to prioritize his health. He’s done more than enough these last few years if he decidedly to withdraw from Worlds (and I think he will).

I'm really scared about Yuzu being forced to skate for the 3 spots. Because it sounds like the injury is far more severe than he expected. Hopefully he can just lie low and heal up. If he can go represent Japan next season, and do well at worlds, Japan can get its 3 spots back on home turf, and wouldn't that be a lovely story?

As for Nagakubo- is Yuzu thinking already of his future as a coach and looking to possibly apprentice under him? Or in this case, since Nagakubo is the coach of Sota, who also fractured a right ankle and has had to recover, is Yuzu drawing parallels and asking about how to gradually recover full use of the right ankle?

Before Shoma turned senior Japan lost their third spot for a year because Yuzuru got second and Takahiko Kozuka finished 12th at 2015 worlds, and I seem to recall some people blaming him for losing the third spot by not winning.:noshake: Can’t blame the guy for wanting to move into a forest with that level of scrutiny and expectation upon him. He might be in a bit of a standoff with JSF right now over worlds and is talking about his injuries to get people to see his side, but that’s just my speculation.

If we’re fantasizing about potential new programs, I’m putting in a vote for a new uptempo piece choreographed by Kurt Browning. Kurt did a great ex for him when he was a teenager, but I’d love to see what he could do with that kind of material now. I know nobody does the ethereal artiste thing better than Yuzuru Hanyu, but he has such a rock star charisma that I want to see him engage with the audience more. I watched some cheesy ice shows on YouTube and it’s obvious some people are just going through the motions in the group skates, but he’s 100% committed to the music and so expressive towards the audience. Even some professional figure skating commentators don’t seem to realize he has that side to him because he and Javier mostly stayed in their own lanes at Camp Orser with Javier being the engaging showman and Yuzuru the lyrical artist, as they mostly stuck with what the judges liked from them previously. I know he mentioned the Prince SP was different but fun for him to have a kind of concert experience, though it was deemed too risky for Olympic season. If he’s indeed planning to skate for himself and for fun rather than for judges and medals in the future, I hope he will take more risks musically and play with the audience.

If they can't secure 3 spots for Japan without Yuzu, then there realy is no need for Japan to get the third spot.

He should be able to do whatever he wants. Surely JSF isn't that inhumane? Plus, showing up to Worlds and bombing won't help him.

And Shoma is more than capable of a good finish... It's really Tanaka they're worrying about. Shoma's real competitors, seeing that Javi's almost certainly out, and Yuzu should be taking a rest, are Nathan and Boyang. Shoma should be guaranteed silver, and hence three spots for Japan. Unless he bombs, of course.

Seriously, forcing Hanyu to go to Worlds and then him bombing due to his injury is not going to be a good look. It'll give ammunition to judges to start giving his competitors the Zagitova treatment.

What's the worst JSF can do if Hanyu tells them to go take a hike?
