Hanyu's score in the first competition of GPS
2013 80.40
2014 82.95
2015 73.25
2016 79.65
2017 94.85←NEW

His interview was relatively positive, he said it was good that he didn't pop any jump in SP and he didn't miss the timing of the jumps, also the mistakes he made were not so bad. The gap between Nathan's score is not so big, so he wants to do what he'll be able to do.

German Eurosport - Original Commentary, Yuzuru Hanyu Short Program, 20/10/17 Rostelecom Cup

H(endrik Schamberger): Vierfacher Rittberger.

H: uhhhh!

H: Es waren schon 54.

S: Es waren eben schon 54.

Also Spannung...

Nahhh...'s es is' immer schwierig.

H: Relativ deutlich, sechs Punkte.

tl;dr: Yuzuru is the Usain Bolt of Figure Skating!

Statistic looks good

It's a pity that he didn't land the 4loop clear, it was marked as under-rotated. The speed going into the 4T-3T looks like the issue. Let's hope he get the momentum right for tomorrow.

After the SP, this has been circulating on my twitter TL. https://twitter.com/Chiyochiyoyo/status/921331831147917312 I--didn't know--that there's a sexy way to zip down your jersey....

:points: best way for unzipping jersey!

I almost die at work trying to catch up with the news:drama: I've just watched the SP and I liked it,a lot. The mistakes were a shame but he did the other things beautifully. And the flower boy,he was very sweet:luv17:

One question, why he lost a level in the last spin? It seemed right for me.

I don't care if he can't win tomorrow, he always starts slow. And this outing was better than at SC:laugh: Yuzu fight!

I didn't expect Yuzu to skate Chopin clean everytime until Olympics. 94.85 is a huge score for a SP with two mistakes including one deduction and by far his best result in the first GP-event (Thanks for the statistics!)

6 points are not an impossible gap to close, but even if he can't catch Nathan in this event, it's not a huge problem as long as he can attack in the big competitions

Actually 94 is his second highest SP score at his first GP event. He scored 95 at Skate America in 2012 breaking the WR at the time (and then bombed the free to get silver!).

This is actually fairly decent by the last couple of year’s standard - actually it’s a huge improvement to the heart attacks I’d get from a Skate Canada. I trust he will figure it out as the season continues.

I'm not worried at all tbh :) his first GP event is usually even messier, so this is an improvement - today's mistakes weren't that bad! And what counts is that he hits when it really matters

I think it just looks bad when compared to ACI. If he hadn't broken a WR in his first competition of the season, expectations for his SP this early would be lower.

True! And he also changed the layout compared to ACI!

YouTube is at it again with the Hanyu bashing. Apparently they're mad that hanyu didn't take the little flower boy's picture. I don't think hanyu was trying to be rude I just think he couldn't take it due to security reasons perhaps. Who knows maybe his team told him not to accept any gifts or presents from fans.

When I think about the SP performance, mistakes and all, I think choosing to repeat Chopin again showed it's value today. I think if he was doing a new SP and began it with a mistake he may have allowed it to unravel further than it did with Chopin at COR. Since he was familiar with the music he was able to keep a certain level of concentration for the axel and combo (even if he fell), and the choreography, to prevent the program from completely falling apart. So I am firmly in support of the repeat decision if it allows him to maintain a level of cool even if he makes minor mistakes.

I haven't read the comments of YouTube (I always don't) and I don't know about Yuzuru's intention, but he said "His hair was like Plushenko. I hope he is going to be a strong skater in Russia".

One question, why he lost a level in the last spin? It seemed right for me.

I'm not very familiar with the rules myself, but just picked up bits and pieces from watching Yuzu's programs...
The first position in his last spin has a planned change of edge, this counts as 1 of the 4 levels. Since all positions need to be held for at least 3 revolutions, and he did just under 3 revolutions after the change of edge, he lost a level. But the root cause is because he took a couple seconds longer with the step sequence, so his last spin started a bit later than usual, and since he always wants to hit the music note, he moved on to the next position with the music instead of after full 3 turns.

(...absolutely no idea if I'm right or not...)

Yes, he doesn't seem to beat himself up too much over his performance which is a relief to see. I was very distracted by his golden collar last night; was it new? My memory is failing me these days...but the Olympic blue and gold!
