Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Thanks for the updates! I'm also happy if he isn't using the 4lz. He just focus on the other elements. Chopin and Seimei are programs amazing enough no other can execute the way he does (even without that damn 4Lutz). When he wins the Olys I wouldn't mind him with the lz again at Worlds:biggrin:.

I just want to thank everyone here for being overall calm, reasonable and positive-minded. It feels like everywhere else I go online people are completely counting him out or calling him "selfish" for not playing the media game and withdrawing from the team event, like... :curse:

(Not like skaters can win either way with publicity- one of my other favorites got criticized for doing too much press)

Completely agree! With little to no news about him for months, I myself am too worried and seeing posts in other places writing him off did not help.

Anyhow, the recent news about him gives me relief. No team event, no 4Lz, no problem :)

This is the comment of Shizuka Arakawa about Yuzuru when she appeared in the morning show called "Shuichi" on the last Sunday. (I'm sorry, I don't have the link.)

(about being absent from the team event)

"In the case of Hanyu-senshu, he is a skater who has experienced the Olympics before, so he is not a skater who has to grab the atmosphere of the Olympics by participating in the team event prior to the individual's. He has the experience, and I think he made this decision considering of the time he needed to bring his best peak to his aim. His goal is not only taking part in the Olympics. He needs to prepare for competing with others to win the gold medal, and it must be the time needed to move himself up to the level that he can actually do that."

(and the host said he was worried because there was only a little information about Yuzuru's injury and the treatment.)

"We don't have many information about how his body has been recovered, however, I think we can assume that he might not decide to participate if he is unable to fight for the gold medal."

(and another host asked how the injury on the right foot effected him.)

"We take off using the right or left leg, but all jumps are landed on the right foot, so it puts really big burden. We are worried because it was his right ankle. But when I first saw him getting injured (in the video), I thought it was the right knee, but it was the ankle. Given that, I guess it was one consolation to think that the skating boots were pretty hard and he could tape his ankle up."

How awesome it is to wake up with the great news :yahoo: it is always a relief to hear good news from Brian, he have that quality that makes ppl believe in him. If the news is a bad news, I think he rather say nothing. So that’s definitely good news from Brian.

USA article on Yuzuru! TIME magazine is widely read - nice to see Yuzuru acknowledged as perhaps the "greatest figure skater of all time".

First New York Times, now TIME magazine, he is in the center of the hall of fame (who manage to go radio silence for months) :rofl2: impressive~

English NBC article. Yuzu will arrive on the 11th.

“He’s training and he’s training well, I can say that much,” Orser said on Tuesday at the Gangneung Ice Arena practice facility, where Orser was working with another skater.

“He’s back jumping and… the whole past week was really good. Every day he was getting stronger and stronger. He’s training without pain, and being cautious and smart.”

Orser continued: “It’s been quite a journey, actually. I’ve learned a lot about him and I think he’s learned a lot about himself. For me, I’m really impressed as to how he’s managed it and kept himself cool. We have a plan and we’re staying on it; every day is getting better. He’s quite remarkable.”

More positive news from Brian! Glad to hear he’s been coming along well and has been pain-free.

・He has been doing run-through, and doing the training for regain the stamina from last week.
・He won't do 4Lz because it is not ready.
・He needed one more week to get back to his 100% form.
・"He had really tried hard until today."(Kobayashi)
・He has been practicing 4Lo, 4S, 4T.

So, basically, Shizuka and Oda's opinions were right :)

Olympics: Hanyu will be 100% ready to defend title, says coach Orser
https://english.kyodonews.net/news/...0-ready-to-defend-title-says-coach-orser.html

"It is amazing how we can peak pretty quickly. I remember in the summer we got back training in July and saying then he's ready for the Olympics. He was ready in August. So we have all that work behind us and it is sort of in the bank and thank goodness for that because now it is all coming to fruition," said Orser.

"We are kind of peaking again and it is mainly conditioning right now and getting some run-throughs done. But he has done a lot of conditioning off the ice so in some ways he is much stronger than ever but we need the extra time."

With every article my smile grows bigger. it’s so reassuring to hear so many positive things from Brian. Of course this is not everything, he has to perform. But if Brian is certain he will be at 100% then we are off to a fantastic start!
Thank you everyone for the updates!

So happy to hear updates that Yuzuru's getting back into competitive form. Thank you to all those who posted updates.:thank: My prayers that he be given at least a fighting chance to defend his Olympic gold medal have been heard. Thank you Lord! Will continue praying that there will be time enough for Yuzuru to peak when it matters.

For me the silver lining in the injury is that the decision to include the quad lutz in a sense has been taken from Yuzuru. I know in past posts I have been on the side of him upping his technical ante, but I was never comfortable with the idea of him doing the quad lutz in his Olympic programs as, unlike the quad loop, he hasn't been doing the jump competitively prior to the Olympic season. Too short a time I feel for that jump to hold up under all that Olympic pressure.

With nothing to hold on but Brian's broad smile and saying Yuzuru will be fine during the news blackout, I took comfort in last month's victory of my other favorite athlete, Roger Federer, successfully defending his Australian Open crown. When Roger won it last year, it was his first competition since he was injured at Wimbledon six months ago. But one shouldn't count a Roger Federer out nor a Yuzuru Hanyu. Both just have this deep love for their sport that makes them face squarely the challenges in their way rather than be daunted and discouraged. As the quote says, "Faith makes all things possible; love makes it easy."

So happy to get these amazing news! I’m having a rough week and this put a smile on my face :) it’s also nice to hear how Brian is impressed with how Yuzu handled the situation, I think he has matured a lot in the past couple of years. Ganba Yuzu!
