Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

On the spots, if a country only sends 1 skater they can earn 3 spots if they win, right? Similarly if that one skater places in top 13 then that would earn them two spots - this is how Dabin choi earned two spots for the South Korean ladies this season.

Either way, I think Yuzuru deserves to prioritize his health. He’s done more than enough these last few years if he decidedly to withdraw from Worlds (and I think he will).

as far as i know for 3 spots, if you are the only competitor and placed 1-2 you can guarantee 3 spots, and you have to finish in top 10 for 2 spots (which was Dabin's placement at last Worlds), if you are 2 and both advances to LP top 12 will be enough for 2 spots

I know he probably feels pressure from the federation, but with an injury like this they really can't expect him to compete. I feel like if Keiji/Mura want a chance to compete next year they will need to do well this year. That seems fair enough to me. Shoma will certainly place high, first or second I would guess.

lyrichord, stormblade, thank you for your clear explanation :thank: I don't know why but I had misinterpreted the rule as the podium finishers were guaranteed 3 spots. (So Canada or Spain had only 2 spots for some years while I was thinking they had 3)

To be really honest, the world 2019 is going to be held in Japan but I suspect if JSF will mind 3 spots this time. I know it sounds unfair and just my opinion though.

Hi yude - do you mean that since 2019 Worlds will be in Japan, that JSF will definitely want 3 spots? Meaning that Yuzu would be pressured to compete in Milan?

Before Shoma turned senior Japan lost their third spot for a year because Yuzuru got second and Takahiko Kozuka finished 12th at 2015 worlds, and I seem to recall some people blaming him for losing the third spot by not winning.:noshake: Can’t blame the guy for wanting to move into a forest with that level of scrutiny and expectation upon him. He might be in a bit of a standoff with JSF right now over worlds and is talking about his injuries to get people to see his side, but that’s just my speculation.

If we’re fantasizing about potential new programs, I’m putting in a vote for a new uptempo piece choreographed by Kurt Browning. Kurt did a great ex for him when he was a teenager, but I’d love to see what he could do with that kind of material now. I know nobody does the ethereal artiste thing better than Yuzuru Hanyu, but he has such a rock star charisma that I want to see him engage with the audience more. I watched some cheesy ice shows on YouTube and it’s obvious some people are just going through the motions in the group skates, but he’s 100% committed to the music and so expressive towards the audience. Even some professional figure skating commentators don’t seem to realize he has that side to him because he and Javier mostly stayed in their own lanes at Camp Orser with Javier being the engaging showman and Yuzuru the lyrical artist, as they mostly stuck with what the judges liked from them previously. I know he mentioned the Prince SP was different but fun for him to have a kind of concert experience, though it was deemed too risky for Olympic season. If he’s indeed planning to skate for himself and for fun rather than for judges and medals in the future, I hope he will take more risks musically and play with the audience.

I think very few actually blamed Yuzuru for coming in second in 2015 (I think many looked at Kozuka and Mura who had some pretty bad SPs). I would think after winning gold and publicly talking about how the injury isn't healed no one would pressure him to try and go Worlds. I don't think the federation will otherwise there would be an uproar.

In terms of potential new programs, I want him to stick with Jeff. I'm still waiting for a jazz program which I think he will eventually do (he kept talking about wanting to skate to jazz). I'll also add that I think Yuzuru is also the engaging showman ;) He's got great lyrical qualities as you pointed out, but the first program that caught my attention was Parisienne Walkways and that is about as showy as you get. For the Prince SP I think the risk was technical and perhaps the pacing of the music, he had been having issues with the jumps in the program that season and I think they wanted more of a sure thing in the Olympic season so they went back to Ballade no. 1 - otherwise I'm sure he would've kept Prince and he had full intention to until I believe Shirota talked to him.

I also don't expect him to ever say he's "just going to skate for fun/joy of skating" if he plans to stay a competitive skater, because I think that would ring hollow for him. He likes to win, he likes competition. In my personal opinion any highly competitive skater who has ever said something like that is pretty much pretending - deep inside they're still skating because they want to win medals on a certain level. Plus, I think fun/joy for him means winning . He may want to experiment a bit in the future, but I still think he wants to win above all, he wouldn't stay a competitive skater if he didn't feel he'd be able to win.

I'm really scared about Yuzu being forced to skate for the 3 spots. Because it sounds like the injury is far more severe than he expected. Hopefully he can just lie low and heal up. If he can go represent Japan next season, and do well at worlds, Japan can get its 3 spots back on home turf, and wouldn't that be a lovely story?

As for Nagakubo- is Yuzu thinking already of his future as a coach and looking to possibly apprentice under him? Or in this case, since Nagakubo is the coach of Sota, who also fractured a right ankle and has had to recover, is Yuzu drawing parallels and asking about how to gradually recover full use of the right ankle?

I didn't know Yuzuru and Nagakubo have been keeping in touch, but he must be contacting many people on LINE  It seems to me this line was a part of greeting in the message he had sent, because he said "some day". Nagakubo also says, in his opinion, Yuzuru's injury might take about 6 months to be fully recovered (and I'm not surprised at it), but he is not a doctor and we are not sure what kind of conversations they have. One thing I feel is that Yuzuru is really thinking about his life after retiring, which I didn't feel particularly after Sochi Olympics. I feel it in his comments in the interviews or press cons. He has two Olympic gold medals now, his future is going to be only bright. And to be a coach is absolutely one of the options :)

I'm sorry, Bonesfan, my English was bad :hslap: I meant completely opposite. JSF will (might) not care about 3 spots, JMO.

Yes, I get that vibe too. But it could also be that Yuzu's resigned to being off-ice for a while to heal up, so he would want to keep himself busy, so thinking of what to do after his competitive career would be one option. Plus I get the feeling that he wants to ask because of his injury, and Sota having come back from an injury after a right ankle fracture. Either that, or it's really for his graduation thesis-he should be graduating soon right?

I hope he's skipped World, takes a season off to heal completely. It did great for Yuna after Vancouver.

Yes, it is graduation season now in Japan. We have no information about him yet but I hope the good news will come :)

I think he might skip the GP series if he needs 6 months, but I feel he will be recovered by Nationals, so maybe we'll see him at 4CC and Worlds?

If Keiji skates anywhere close to his 4CC 2018 scores, he will have a chance to help keep those spots and place above 12th in the depleted field. He had a drop of almost 20 points in his total score between 4CC and Olympics, mostly based on his poorer SP, so if he makes those up he can have a better finish. Shoma will do his best to fend off Nathan and Boyang.
