Other parts of Japan is definitely less crazy than Tokyo as far as paparazzi/media attention is concerned. And to be honest with you now these gossip magazines have a place in online news sites too I accidentally came across them getting a hold of him and his family and snapping a few oddly angled photos...not great.

I watched a TV program where Mao and other top female Japanese athletes chatted about their lives; she mentioned she ALWAYS wears a cap when going out; almost always with a mask on too.

Realistically speaking, there is no good facility and environment for Yuzuru to train in Japan. One of the reasons he went to Canada was the amazing facility including multiple ice rinks, but if he chose to come back to Sendai, he would have to practice at mid night again. After PC Olympics, he and other medalists visited one of the governmental agencies, and Yuzuru asked them to consider increasing the number of the ice rink for the future skaters.

Also about Mao, she has also been chased by paparazzi (sorry for her), but she has a car so maybe it makes the difference from Yuzuru's case :think:

The news clip of the auction, they sent e-mails to the employees and collected the interested persons. And they are considering of displaying the boots in the meeting room where the visitors can see it, and also in their shop in the affected area of Tohoku.

How does Shoma train?

I'm not following Shoma's information very much, but Chukyo University (which he attends) owns the ice rink while Ice rink Sendai was made for the public. (And Waseda University doesn't have the rink either)

Just for comparison, how would you qualified Shoma´s, Mao´s and Yuzuru´s popularity.

I have the idea Mao is the most popular? Does Mao lives in Tokyo?

I remember for either my first or second trip to Japan (either 2009 or 2015), I was on the train and Mao's face was eeeeeeverywhere.

And for the Olys Yuzu was on tv constantly and in so many papers in the train stations when I visited Japan between the pairs and the men's singles. And when I was telling people I was there because I was attending the skating events for the olympics and took a break, Yuzu's name was the first thing out of their mouths to me. Be it the bell-woman, or my server in the restaurant. Or the guy in the bookstore who saw I was searching for his english biography. He took me right to it.

They were reairing a shoma special when I came in that evening. But when I went to the tokyo 2020 spot in Roppongi they had a lot of Shoma along with other Olympians, including Yuz and Yuzu's R&J costume.

Yes, for now TCC is probably the privatest place for Yuzuru... But it does get me nervous if Paparazzi are a thing in Japan...

When I was in Tokyo 4 years ago and just this February I saw one or two Mao ads on the subway, it wasn’t anything overwhelming but I also didn’t travel too far from Shinjuku or Shibuya this year (I did see Yuzu’s Monster Hunter billboard in 2014 though and a small Amino Vital ad in a tiny shop).

Of course Yuzu and Shoma were all over the papers this trip to Tokyo. It was much easier to run across Yuzu ads, books, magazines and such while I was in Sendai. Both of them were shown on the news every day of course.

I'd like to share something about GPS selection from Shirota's book (sorry in advance if this is off topic, I'll delete it if it is not appropriate).

The skaters submit their preferred two competitions to their federation. And at ISU meeting, first of all, the top 6 finishers in WC take in order a desired slot at one competition, and they do the same in the second round. Then 12 slots are filled out of 72 and 60 slots are vacant, and the skaters finished below the 7th place finally start to pick. But from here, in addition to the skaters' wish, there are various things mixed in the meeting such as strategies and intentions of each federation. Mostly, they want to send their skaters to the competitions which have less rivals, and if they host a competition, they want to invite the skaters who have popularity. Shirota gave an example of the past selection of the Japanese ladies. In 2005, Suguri and Ando could take their slots they had wished because they did well in WC, and Mao was in her first senior year but she was already popular so every country wanted to invite her. But Arakawa, Onda, Nakano's selections were difficult to adjust, Shizuka was hoping to be in SA and SC but decided to be in CoC and TEB where her rivals also participated.

It seems the announcement from ISU is published every year, so I don't know if this is how it works this year. But I personally think if Shoma wants to be in NHK (I doubt it though, he may prefer the competition in overseas), he would be selected. And then I'm not sure if Yuzuru will be in NHK with Shoma, and I'm totally fine if Yuzuru competes in other competition since perhaps every country wants him to come

I'd bet on SC and NHK.. Patrick is out, so Canada will surely be there for their adopted one , and there is no way he can avoid NHK imho. GPF is in Canada so Canada-Japan_Canada seems perfect schedule for Yuzuru without too much traveling and getting tired.

Yes, I remember that (and to be honest, I don't want to see the same scenario again lol), and it might have something to do with the fact that the venue was in Sendai.

But it is a good point that yude mentioned: Top 6 at Worlds have first choice (first Top 3 then top 4-6) and thus that might limit the kind of choices Yuzu might have after, depending on the strategizing. He can meet any of the Worlds medalists at any GP next season since he won't be seeded, so it'll be a question of advantages for the federations in terms of points. The Japanese men's field is sadly less deep than the ladies so whatever choice, including Shoma and Yuzu confronting each other at NHK, should be fine in terms of their chances.

But mostly it all depends on whether he's recovered and ready and wants to do more than one GP, which might well be NHK, since Yuzu hasn't been in a competition in home soil since NHK 2016...

If Yuzu is going to do GP season, it won’t be the best idea to have both Yuzu and Shoma at NHK. Of course it would be quite interesting, but the fed will want to maximize the chance of having their top skaters at GPF. Of course, if everything goes well, having 1-2 won’t be bad, but having both in different GP will increase the chances of both finishing 1st in their assignments instead.
But yes, since Yuzu is not going to Worlds, he can meet any of the future top 3 next season. I’d love to see Yuzu and Boyang at NHK, just like in 2015.

Honestly NBC is on point with those camera angles. Of all the videos I've downloaded I watch theirs the most. And Johnny and Tara are generally quiet so double thumbs up for me. I'm glad someone posted this comparison. Hope they do it for the short, too.
