Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Thanks for the breakdown on this. I’ve never been completely clear on how the GP competitions are assigned. I think Yuzuru will definitely do NHK and perhaps Rostelem Cup, like he did this year. Both competitions are later in the season which will give him more time to heal and prepare, if it’s needed.

Though I do wish he’d do a North American assignment again. It would give us NA fans an opportunity to see him skate in person. [emoji4] He hasn’t done Skate Canada or Skate America in years.

They both know that taking off a year in this men’s field would be very unwise. The talent is so deep and the sport is changing drastically year to year. Plus I can’t see Yuzuru “relaxing” or doing shows for a year then coming back. He’s too competitive. The only thing that will keep him away is an injury.
Yuzu will get bored doing jst shows for a year haha.

He needs a drive.

Also he wnt go to Skate America becuz of Nathan imo.

+ why would he go to RoC when Skate Canada is much closer to TCC?

It's actually very common, there are many many skaters and not enough spots to fit them all. Top skaters are the ones that get 2 GPs.
You can find more information on the matter here in the section "Designation of Skaters". It's from a past season but these things don't change much throughout the years.

The criteria is not always very clear, no one really knows for sure what goes on there but this is what I've come to understand. Please refer to the link above for more information :)

Well he did go to SC in the 2015-2016 and the 2016-2017 seasons, and even last season even though he chose Rostelecom he went to Autumn Classic as well, I would like for him to have a NA GP because the traveling takes a lesser toll on the body...but Yuzu never does too well at SC [emoji3]
Why did he choose RoC when there was Nathan Chen? (Decreases likelihood of him winning Gold at first GP)

It was a weird decision it seemed.

Ive never seen Yuzu attend only one GP . How did he get invited to 2 GP during first year of senior debut? Do Jr World Champs get automatic 2 GPs?

Junior World medalists and JGPF champions get considered in the process, though it's not specified how. He got NHK on his senior debut so he was likely a host pick there (though I am not as familiar with his first senior season) and earned the other GP due to his results as junior...?

He couldn't have known Nathan would have been there because Yuzu picked first out of everyone in the field (as World Champion), while Nathan, placing 6th, was left with what the 4th (Javier) and 5th (Patrick) didn't pick.

Personally I prefer to combine the 2018-19 thread with the present one because I don't like to see other skaters now having threads with more pages that Yuzu  Of course, they have those number of pages for their entire career and Yuzu had a very short season because of injury and I'm childishly jealous  but I can't bear it :confused2:
This thread will continue through the next season as well. :cheer:

Oh I c. I think Yuzu may choose Skate Canada due to it being close to Toronto this year. He likes Skate Canada haha

I said that to Yude cos Yuzuru mentioned before in interviews that he is not for taking a year off habit/concept as its hard to get back to top form after that. I believe he used Patrick Chan's 1 yr off after Sochi as example. And maybe Mao Asada.
The interview was way before 2018 OG.

Now that his ankle is healing up nicely, he 's raring to go, as usual. Lets see, his left foot injury took around 6 months from total rest to competing.
Currently is like his 1st month on rehab? He has May to Aug, lots of time. If the ankle's still too much pain when jumping quads , then he has to reassess.

As for North America assignments, didnt Yuzuru particiapte in Skate Canada 2 to 3 years in a row? 2012 Skate America. Then it was Skate Canada few years. Yuzuru doesnt do that well at Skate Canada, i.e. getting 2nd while he could win the other GPs.

GP invitations are given to Top 12 World (2 automatic spots), Top 24 Season's Best (one automatic spot converted into 2 because there's 70 men spot and the top 12 at Worlds only occupy 24 of them) and then Top 24 World Standing if there's any left. So during Yuzu's first senior season, he got 2 GP spots probably due to his Season's Best and I think back then Junior World champions were guaranteed a spot as well.

What Yuzu won't have this time around, for next season, is right of choice, because he didn't place at Worlds. So he'll get what his fed negotiates for him.

NHK would wnt him.

As for the other one plz

I think Shoma will get NHK (or will choose) home advantage is not easy to give up.

I tHink Yuzuru will do Skate Canada and TdF/ Rostelecom Cup; between TdF and RC France will be the smarter choice since it doesn´t have a strong men field and this will benefit Yuzuru (honestly is more important to get a good placement than what the medal is made of, since his final goal for GP is to be in GPF).

Hi. I'm new here. I used to visit GS as anon for a long time but I decided to create an account. I have an account on PlanetHanyu but I don't post often. I hope we keep Hanyu's fanfest alive even when we already have PH. GS is big and famous figure skating forum for fs fan and we -Yuzuru's fans are a part of figure skating community. It'd sad if new fs fans come here but can't find anything about Yuzuru.

Welcome :) thanks to the many wonderful posters who keep the thread updated and interesting, it is plenty alive! Post often and long :peace:

I'm contributing to posting too! Hello!

So, given the recent rumors, how long before Yuzuru lands a 4A once Boyang arrives at TCC? And how long before Brian completely balds?

Look at Brian separating the two of them like he did with Javi and Yuzu before Olympics but this time for a completely different reason :p

Oh, wait, Boyang is going to TCC? I had no idea.

Oh, wait, Boyang is going to TCC? I had no idea.

Latest interview by CSA is that they're considering sending him to Lori (for choreography) and Orser for what seems to be a temporary arrangement (Boyang's coach is going too) to help develop his skills and competitive mindset. Not sure how long it'll last but I'm hoping it's whenever Yuzuru is back in Canada... for reasons.

Yep you’re right! 😁 Though I’m saying NA, I guess I’m really thinking the US. He was here for Worlds 2015, but he hasn’t been at SA since 2012. 🙁 Perhaps that will change for the 18-19 season.

Very excited about Boyang going to TCC, even with it being temporary. He has a lot of talent. His 4Lutz is the best in world IMO. He has expression but it needs work. TCC will be able to help with this. If he’s there when Yuzuru is back, I think it will be a good learning experience for both.
