Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

You mean the grey suit jacket he wore when arriving at the Olympics? Please, no, the sleeves!!! :drama:

But I must say, minus the sleeves, he looked great in that! I must confess, the photos from his arrival at Incheon airport was what got me curious about who this guy is and look where I am now!

That's interesting! You had never seen him before on TV or internet? I'm curious :)

Yes, that one! I don't know why I thought it was grey.

Maybe because he was wearing the grey one at the parade of 2014 :) I think he is going to wear the Olympic suits at the imperial garden party, too. Let's check the sleeves, hehe.

Nope, not at all. I’m from Thailand and figure skating is barely existent here. I’m a kpop fan so the only skater I’ve ever heard of was Kim Yuna... and that was literally my only exposure to the sport! If it’s sports, I generally watch volleyball, basketball, etc. And I guess because the way youtube and other internet suggestions work, the things that randomly pop up for me are Kpop related only.

I was actually looking for some Kpop singer airport pic on Twitter that day and ended up seeing Yuzuru trending. The trended keywords and tweets were mostly in Japanese so I had no idea who he was. I legit thought he was a Japanese prince or something because of the number of guards lol (please excuse my ignorance & lack of knowledge about the Japanese royal family).
So with my curiosity I searched and found that he is indeed an ice prince, proceeds to look him up on youtube, watched his Sochi PW and was very impressed, then went on to watch Seimei (not sure if it was nhk or gpf) and THAT sealed the deal. So I am now here, educated with basic technical knowledge of figure skating (and still trying to learn more), posting in his fanfest hahahah

Sorry for the very long post!

Cool, loved hearing your story. It's great to hear how Yuzu can gather new fans to figure skating from outside Japan, from all around the world. :points:

Thank you for sharing your story :) If I were you, I would have the same thought looking at Yuzuru at the airport  I watch other sports and volleyball is one of my favorite, and I think women's team Thailand is a very good and strong team  Please enjoy the thread!

I’m glad I have a place to share my story. None of the people around me follows the sport though I think a good amount of people heard about “that cute Japanese skating guy who won the olympics” back in Feb. But that was that, they don’t know his name or anything else... and not a lot of people go further to watch the sport itself.

Speaking of which, would you care to listen about how I got to see Yuzuru in person just two weeks after my discovery

we've got to hear about that. :eeking:

I think back in 2014he wore a no Olympic team related suit for it, in the other event (Don’t remember the name, but Olympic and Para Olympic delegation), he wore his Olympic team suit [emoji848]

we've got to hear about that. :eeking:

Hehehe it was 80% luck and 20% determination
I originally had a trip to Japan planned and my flight happened to arrive at Narita Airport on the very same day that Team Japan flew back from Korea.
When I got there I looked around a little bit and spotted a big crowd of media and Pooh-equipped Japanese  so I immediately know and joined them. With the amount of people already stationed there, I thought the athletes would be coming out soon but boy was I wrong. I think I stood there and waited for a good two hours, the crowd grew and I realized I was actually one of the early ones and was nearly in the front! So yeah, I got to join the Japanese crowd in congratulating Yuzuru, Shoma and other Team Japan athletes while taking some (shaky) videos for keepsake :yahoo:

You mean my discovery of Yuzuru? It was this year. Feb 11, 2018 to be precise :)

Hello fellow South East Asian. From Msia here. Though my reason for watching men's figure skating(I used to follow pairs only) was totally different -> a male skater from my country was trying to qualify for 2018 Olympics. He made it.
Hopefully skaters from Thailand will feature in future competitions.

I see that the thread is now for 2017-2019... am I the only one who prefer it to go by season? Being new to the party, it helped with my backlogging and I like the pattern/consistency when I go down the list in the index. Combining two seasons kinda disrupts the aesthetic pattern for me hahaha
I’m not necessarily complaining though! Just voicing my preference ^^ I appreciate whoever does all the housekeeping here :)

The mods divided it by season because the FF was huge and very active. The thread isn't as active as it used to be, so they probably decided there's no need to continue to split the thread by seasons going forth.

Ah hello :) I do hope so too, and as a fellow SE Asian, I wish Julian success as well!
I guess the perks for not having a skater from my own country is that I can root for Yuzuru guilt-free :P

I see, thank you for the clarification!
Has it been less active in general or is it because Yuzuru sat out and disappeared for a good part of this season? I'd be a little sad if it is the former...

Mostly because there's other active places to talk about Yuzu too. He's not any less popular, no worries!
