Well that's not very positive....LOL!

I don't see why they couldn't make the podium if the skates are clean and strong. Being realistic, there are lots of quads with the men and women from Russia, but as they say, "Ice is slippery!"

The numbers say otherwise. Many specialists will agree with that. Some even say they may not make the free skate. I don't think that the situation is dire. I never count on others messing up for my faves to win a medal. If Canadians skate their best, they will still need others to falter to gain enough points to surpass some other teams, enough for a podium ! This is just the sad and unfortunate reality : I do not remember from my lifetime of watching the sport when was the last time Canada has sent a team that didn't have a very clear strong medal contender. The best shot right now is in ice dance, and that's far from a given... The last time Canada came back from the games without a medal in figure skating was before I was old enough to follow the sport : 1980.. so as a longtime hardcore fan, I am cheering but also rational and lucid about the chances here.

Yeah, the math for a team medal just isn't there. Even if everyone skates great, it would require a couple total meltdowns in the SP from one of the favourites to open the door. We just don't have the firepower of Russia, US and Japan. Also looking at the list of countries in the Team Event this time, really looks like it might give the boost to Japan in the ice dance to even maybe let them challenge for silver, which only further dims our chances of squeaking out a medal.

I'll be cheering hard for them nonetheless, but just being realistic.

Well, Keegan Messing is evidently not in the country... so not sure wtf is going on there, but at this point it must be Roman in at least the short.

We should be starting to see media reports on what's going on with Messing later today. Very weird.

Hope it is just a weird delay and not Covid testing difficulties.

I agree the situation is worrisome... at the same time, I don't like cryptic posts and speculation... that's just me... so until we hear from Keegan that he cannot be there or skate the team event, I will cheer loud and clear :) gogogo :) and I admit that days are counted...

Also being realistic, their only real medal chance is in ice dance, and if everyone goes clean, I do think G/P deserve to be on the podium. But it's not just about the medals - here's hoping for great skates!

I'm hoping J/R can throw together the SP and FS I know they can do, and M-T/M skate back to their potential.

The singles skaters would be great to get top 10 finishes because those fields are so stacked, but just hoping Keegan gets to skate and all of them have positive Olympic experiences.

The "ice is slippery" medal might come from team but they really need to skate better than their usual and have disasters from USA or Japan to make the podium - though I don't wish that upon them. Canada was the fave to win in 2018, and they delivered and it would have been poor form for folks from other countries to hope for Canada to mess up just so their team could win.

Let's not wish bad performances or any issues to the other teams... Team Canada is already depleted with Keegan's positive test.... I was debating whether or not Piper and Paul had a better chance than the team event for a medal... Now I have to give it to them... to me they both were a solid 4th.... now Piper and Paul are getting a bit closer to 3rd if SinKats have to skate 4 programs quickly due to his fragile back... and the team is a bit further away from 3rd without Keegan.

It really all depends on the point differential and that's not just up to Japan or USA... If some skaters like Gubanova or Morisi or even Grassl from countries not supposed to make the FP come ahead of Canadians in the singles, it will create a point deficit that cannot be made up in the FP. It's really a SP competition with very little movement in the LP... so that's why Keegan was so important.

Yup, spots 4 thru 7 are all pretty close between Georgia, Canada, Italy and even China with a little home cooking. Getting to that free skate will not be easy, it could come down to just a point or two between making the cut and not. Every placement point will matter between those four.

I’m tempted to add Georgia to my predictions. They aren’t stellar in any discipline but the team event is consistency and they have the goods on paper to make the FS.

Impossible spoiler which I truly want this Olympics… Anastasia Gubanova somehow beats Valieva and it costs ROC the team gold by a point.
