2014 Skate Canada Mens FS 11/01

I predicted the podium correctly :yay:

Did you actually pick Mura for the gold? Good for you! I reversed Javi and Mura, so close, but no cigar. And Adam  did not help my predictions. (Now I know why I should have been following skating more closely in my 20 year absence, and understood his unpredictability, rather than being blown away by Liszt at Finlandia.)

I said it at Skate America, I'll say it again: for men, we might as well have Japan and then the rest of the world. And the rest of the world loses, at least on jumps and points. But POTO and Carmen???? Why???

Mura crying in the kiss & cry was a very touching moment. Not a fan of his programs but his win was much deserved!

But I think the problem is that the relative success of Javi's Chaplin routine went too much to Orser's head, and thus the focus on overly cutesy programs. IMHO, the fp that Javi had about 3 seasons ago with some Spanish flair was the better direction for Javi. It was a challenge for Javi and he did not live up to that earlier program's potential, but with his gorgeous quads, beautiful face and lovely lines (if he knew how to use them), Javi could improve his presentation and become a truly bravura skater. At this rate, I'm not seeing it happening anytime soon though.

I'm not sure what you mean by "over Orser's head?"

This wasn't to me, but just because some people don't 'get' him, that doesn't make them haters. I can appreciate his skating and style and I'm glad there is a big male skater who the US public actually supports because it's good for the sport, but I personally don't prefer his skating. Each person's preferences re: skaters is a matter of choice and subjectivity, not fact.

ITA. I appreciate that Jason is freakishly gifted - his edges, flow, carriage, flexibility are world-class. What I would love to see him do is perhaps tone down the young, happy, excitable, adorable puppy persona, and create a little more gravitas and mature self-containment, perhaps play up his sex appeal (his body - ack!). Dai is the master of this - he connects with the audience but isn't slavishly trying to please them. He invites you into his skating, to experience it with him, if that makes any sense (??). I look forward to seeing how Jason matures as a skater.

Muras reaction was so lovely... as much as I love Javi, I'm really happy for Mura. There's some happy little baby in japan now :)

Stephen could've been on the podium if he hadn't botched his combo spin!
Even if he only went for a level 1 but executed it better, he would've won a bronze medal here.

Why are people talking about Jason and Dai when they are not even at this competition?

Well first Mura's outfit is rather unflattering fit - makes him look short and stocky which I am sure he isn't. Patrick's POTO is far superior. I thought Kozuka was retiring at one point or was that someone else (not Dai). Oh well his soft knees and artistry seem to be unable to help his lack of technical elements. Javier was a shock; didn't expect him to have so many problems and when he misses stuff his programs really unravel whereas Hanyu, Chan still usually have a program. Max was rather meh - despite all the criticisms of Elvis Stoijko in the past he was more consistent and always full of energy. I wish Carriere had a little more tes because he is better than Max as is Adam but Adam needs his tricks. what the heck with those axels. Little girls do harder jumps lol. As for how many golds will Japanese men win - possibly all in the GP but I don't think the russian ladies will win all the gold - at Skate Canada they only have one lady and she is up against the confident and talented Ashley Wagner, Miyhara and oops i forgot about Leonova - hmm, aren't these girls all the second tier russians behind Julia and Adelina? Interesting - the second rate russians are challenging the best Americans. Last week the russians won - what will happen this week. Can Anna hold the pressure? Can Leonova skate clean? Will Ashley outmuscle the russians or will she go splat?

I feel like we should take this video and shove it in Kovtun's face and yell, "THIS IS YOUR FUTURE. FIX IT."

Yes, there is. The addition of the third jump totally changes the mechanics of the whole combination. It's fair.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. A third jump being "wrong" changes nothing about the first two jumps.

AAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY RECORDING ENDED JUST AS JAVI WAS COMING OFF THE ICE!!!!

Well, thank you Skate Canada for starting the competition later than planned! :sarcasm: And thank you Eurosport/Sky for not adjusting the EPG Listings to reflect this! :sarcasm:

I take it he didn't win, then. But, it would have been nice to actually see the highlights and the scores being announced, and hear the comments from Chris and Simon.

I'll just have to wait and see what happens first - the repeat on the TV or somebody uploading it to YouTube.

We may see at NHK that two phantoms will battle for Christine's favor :rofl:

Oh, that's right. "Phantom of the Copera" is going to be my go-to snark for this entire season. I should create a custom image. A shame that this forum doesn't allow pictures to be posted directly, only linked.

Protocols have been posted:

Those who are fans of Max love watching him. Yeah, you just need to get to know Max Aaron inside out, and you would root for him. Sure, he needs to improve his presentation, but he's really working at it. He's no slouch. I love Max Aaron.

:agree: Love watching Max Aaron. :) So happy that he won the bronze. And now he can catch his breath and cheer like crazy for Maddie and Max and their FS. :yay:

 I was just joking. Hopefully it's not a sign of things to come. (Not that I hope people don't skate well....)

I swear if I hear Carmen, POTO and the worst of the worst of the warhouses too much again I gonna send a letter to ISU to ban this music before I will start blackmailing the skates about it.

really sorry I put Mura in 3rd cuz I don't like his programs; Ive been a terrible fanXD
excite for NHK; I hope Mura keeps it up; he did awesome and he cried and he wonn and basically it's all great:D

...

True like I said there are different strokes for different folks. Jason is not perfect, but what some people apparently fail to see is how great he is musically, stylistically and in terms of his innate ability to engage and draw in the audience. These qualities are what make Jason so competitive in seniors without a quad, and formerly so competitive in juniors without a 3-axel! Jason Brown is an all-around skater. In fact, many of the U.S. men are fairly good all-around skaters with a lot of polish. Of course they all have different things to work on and obvious limitations in different areas. It is the over-emphasis on quads that has hurt U.S. men's standing internationally in recent years, along with the poor competitive performances of very artistically gifted skaters like Abbott and Rippon. OTOH, it is not easy for any skaters in the world to consistently maintain quads well in performance after performance, not even the top guns. Politics and rep help those with established quads get good scores when they falter slightly.

As far as popularity, Jason Brown has popularity around the world for his breakout Riverdance at U.S. Nationals and for his enthusiastic personality, and going to the Olympics also helped build Jason some rep internationally. TPTB in figure skating know that Jason's talent and appeal are good for figure skating, so they are probably all crossing their fingers that Jason will master the quad over the next couple of years. In the meantime, if he continues to improve his consistency on the 3-axel, you will see Jason Brown contending for the podium often.
