2014 Skate Canada Mens FS 11/01

I can see Max getting better PCS than Liam because simply put when skaters deliver on the tech, the system as it currently stands gives them extra PCS. Plus, I like Max's improvement and his overall fp is much stronger than Liam's. I don't see Max getting better PCS than Adam, but again that's because judges have no faith in Adam's jumping, despite his gorgeous skating.

Ah the judges have no faith in Adam's jumping because he didn't jump very well or at all - 2 single axels???? - at Skate Canada but he is a glorious skater (too bad you have to do some jumps).

Ha ha, read the entire thread. We all realize that Adam needs to land his jumps and get over the nerves that seem to make him tense up during performances way too often.

ITA. I appreciate that Jason is freakishly gifted - his edges, flow, carriage, flexibility are world-class. What I would love to see him do is perhaps tone down the young, happy, excitable, adorable puppy persona, and create a little more gravitas and mature self-containment, perhaps play up his sex appeal (his body - ack!). Dai is the master of this - he connects with the audience but isn't slavishly trying to please them. He invites you into his skating, to experience it with him, if that makes any sense (??). I look forward to seeing how Jason matures as a skater.

I keep seeing this, and I just am not sure how much I get. He is still 19, a teenager, he is young. Why does he need to start acting older already? In a couple years, yes I likely will be looking for more, but rather know I rather enjoy him acting his youthful self. He is not acting young, he is young. Some 19 year olds may be more mature, but I am inclined to hold everyone to that standard just because some are. Let him enjoy his youth I say.

Even with my stance, I do think T&I is a more "self-contained" program. It is not the happy puppy Jason that Juke Jason is. I rather enjoy the contrast between the two.

And let's not forget the reigning OGM for men's is only a few days off from Jason's age, not sure why he would want to seem older than he is anytime soon.

If Adam hasn't conquered his nerve problem after all these years, I doubt he ever will. How is he addressing that problem?

I think Adam's fear of failing has eclipsed his desire to win. I am not sure how effective a competitor you can be with that mindset. I think the same could be said of a few USA skaters.

Agreed, StitchMonkey, and I also do not understand why Jason should be something he is not. He is young, he is cute, he is a happy camper. With all the folks complaining (and if I cared about ladies, I might be one of them) that Gracie is not skating her authentic self and that she is "trapped" by a princess persona, why should Jason not skate to his authentic self? That is one of the issues I had with Machida, despite his wonderful skating skills: is his too cool for school persona his authentic self? Idk.

I *do* know that no one can be authentic to POTO anymore and only Sammi can be authentic to Carmen. Will someone save me from these tiresome programs?

This wasn't to me, but just because some people don't 'get' him, that doesn't make them haters. I can appreciate his skating and style and I'm glad there is a big male skater who the US public actually supports because it's good for the sport, but I personally don't prefer his skating. Each person's preferences re: skaters is a matter of choice and subjectivity, not fact.

Non-sequitur:

How does qualification to the GPF work? How well do skaters have to place to qualify? And does Javier need to win his next event to qualify?

He should be safe with gold or silver or even possibly with bronze. Fourth would 95% be impossible to qualify.

yes and the reigning OGM is bringing pooh bear around with him, even plays with pooh in the K&C. And people just love him.
So I don't get why Jason has to act more serious. I love it when these young skaters act their age.

The entire event kind of blew my mind in the most hilarious ways. I think I liked it better than Skate America, even if I can't think of a single program I want to watch again. Maybe Mura's so I can see his happy tears for the ultimate triumph of Carmen and POTO over the rest of the pedestrian music choices.

An interesting thing is that Max and Liam are rink-mates and very close friends.
They have a lot in common: both are former hockey players who are studying business/finance-type stuff in preparation for their post-skating careers.

Anyway, they are supportive of each other, and I think it's great that they were together here at Skate Canada.
No doubt that Liam's performing abilities are inspiring to Max, and Max's technical abilities are inspiring to Liam.

Best to both of them. :)

ITA StitchMonkey that Jason is still very young, and so he don't need to overdo trying to skate like a man at this point. I think Jason benefits from having had the time to be under the radar and work on his overall skating and trying to get the 3-axel in his repertoire before suddenly feeling the pressure to perform at top level. I think it hurt both Dornbush and Miner that they suddenly had to put quads in their arsenal and be expected to consistently perform them. That pressure began to make both of them have problems with consistency on their triples. Whereas Jason has had the time to not be rushed putting his 3-axel and his quad out there, partly because he is so very outstanding in all presentation aspects which helps him be competitive with the top flight of skaters. Plus Jason is otherwise usually very consistent on his jumps and he seems to be able to apply everything he is learning and build steadily.

I love that Mura won with Carmen and POTO.

Isn't it fun? I am one of the rare kind who don't mind warhorse, as long as it is choreographed & performed well.
Talking about Mura, I always like his huge 3A more than quad.

Awww, that's great to know. Liam seems to have a similar personality. It's nice to know that Liam and Max are friends and that they support each other. Thanks for sharing that.

Not that unpopular. I'm puzzled as well.

Nice guy but I am puzzled as well - other than he seems to have the Justin bieber type complex. if the fans like him it means it must be he is good but his skating skills while good aren't really that great - he is no Hanyu and certainly not a Chan or Lambiel.

Japan is really blessed with their skaters right now. On this course they will win all GP events
