2015 Worlds Ladies Short Program March 26

Finally got around to watching some videos! I had to hit the sack last night after the 2nd group, so I'm catching up now.

Rika - I thought she was great! No, she's not the most artistic skater out there, but I can see some big improvements in her presentation from the beginning of the season. Her performance made me smile.

Kanako - Lovely! I really, really hate POTO, but her joyous presentation really sells me on this. The jumps looked mostly strong, but I'm a little surprised Amano didn't nail her with an UR on the flip. It looked borderline to me.

Zijun - Gorgeous. Shame about the UR, but she puts a smile on my face the same way Kanako does.

Anna - Ooof. That was a hard fall. Good for her for mostly holding it together, and her spins look much improved.

Polina - Really strong from her; I'm glad she seems to have gotten rid of her SP hiccups from earlier in the season. She's the best US lady we have when it comes to competition nerves, I think. I'm a little surprised her 3T didn't receive an UR call, and she really need to replace the 3F with a loop instead to avoid that edge call. I think she was a bit underscored in PCS.

Liza - WOW. That was an absolute jumping clinic, and the rest of her performance was strong and confident. I desperately want her to get better programs, but deservedly first by a mile. One of the judges gave her negative GOE on her lutz? Whut.

Elena - She did that with a fever?! She's such a fighter. Deservedly 2nd. Her layback is ridiculous.

Gracie - :bang: Someone asked the question earlier and I didn't see an answer -- shouldn't one of her jumping passes been invalidated because of the lack of a combo? I thought I knew the rule about that, but apparently not.

Ashley - Gutted for her. She'd still be in definite medal contention if she'd just done the 2A and 3F cleanly, but as it is she'll need a Hanyu-in-2012 type of performance in the FS for that to happen. I'm really proud of her for how far she's come on that lutz, though -- no edge call at all with Amano on the panel.

Satoko - If you only look at her landings, the jumps looked fully-rotated. I can't really tell when it comes to pre-rotations, though. Her FS is great, but this isn't my favorite program of hers.
 
Interesting work, Sam and Meoima. Watching Sam's video, I think I'd actually give her the flip. It doesn't look nearly as bad as 4CC, and from that angle/quality, she doesn't seem to spin an entire revolution on her toepick. However, Meoima's still frames are a little horrifying. :shocked: If that was all I saw, I'd call UR for sure.

I was surprised by how much video quality vs. still frames affected my perception. I wonder, what if we look someone else's flip in still frames to compare like to like? Liza's as a standard (I barely see any pre-rotation on her jump-a-matron... would it look different in still frames?), then someone like Zijun or Rika (who consistently get their flips ratified, though they aren't as good as Liza in height) as a "base." If we see pre-rotation from others as well, then Satoko deserves to get her jumps ratified. If not... well, there really should be better judging of pre-rotations.
 
Just saw the results of the US Ladies. They are pathetic.

1. Gracie Gold is not very good--"good" meaning "competitive and in medal contention against the best in the world."
2. Ashley is not very good, or is not as good as she used to be.

Both of these two get worse each year.

Polina--the jury is out on her. I'd imagine that she'll come in 5th and start to fade like the rest of them.

The sport is dead in the US, except for ice dancing (for the time being). This will be the last year you see it on prime time television. If it weren't for Johnny's persona as every woman's gay best friend, it wouldn't be on this year, either.

Yeah, I'm being negative and cynical.
 
Liza didn't just squeak out a 3 axel, she landed a HUGE 3axel.There are men who could take notes from that. The only way she'll not win the gold is if she self destructs in the freeskates and I doubt she will. The judges are obviously slighting Polina's pcs scores. I expected her to look puzzled, because it puzzled me looking at her pcs score. I hope she skates a lights out freeskate and moves up. I felt bad for Pogo. That was a painful fall.

Polina still doesn't have much of a reputation since she hasn't been around long enough, she's still new to them. Her mixed-poor results on the GP circuit have not helped her either. If she had skated better during the season her pcs marks today probably would have been higher.

And seriously the video and the frame by frame have showed it all (and not just from one competition). Satoko pre rotates more than 3/4 on her toe pick, does that even count as triple anymore??? In my book: NO. And many people here also don't agree with her TES.

The British commentators had nothing but praise for Satoko--not one mention of under/pre-rotation. Just saying...
 
Anyone? Anyone? Why did Gracie get credit for a 3LUTZ+COMBO and 3LOOP when she in fact did two solo triple jumps, no combination, and thus should have received 0 points for her triple loop?

Sorry but her combo was not given any credit. Don't you see the BV, 6.00? What about her 3Loop?

This is not against Satoko which I like very much, but let's not bring commentators as a prove (our comments are not either). British commentators say one thing, then, you have USA, Spanish, or Italian and so on, saying another. Besides, British are almost always positive about all skaters. That's why I love them. :biggrin:

You are pretty much on target. I don't think Edmunds will just "go away". I know the USFS is ready to toss her under the bus..............that was obvious as I watched US Nats................but......Polina has true grit. She was robbed this time by at least 2 points. So I can only assume the ISU is also ready to toss her under the bus. Maria Butyrskaya had to overcome redheaded-stepchild treatment from her federation and the ISU and she didn't give up................eventually did win a World Title..................GO POLINA!!!!!!!

6.00 is credit.

She completed two solo triple jumps. The rules call for a combination jump of at least 1 triple jump and 1 double jump. She failed to complete this required element, which under the new rules, means that she should have received no credit (as in 0 points) for her 2nd solo triple.

This is what I've been able to find (page 18):

If there is no second jump in a jump combination, the Technical Panel identifies the intended combination during or after the program. If there is no clear way to identify the combination or the solo jump preceded by steps (steps or no steps in both cases), the Technical Panel will decide which one is the solo jump and which one is the combination in favour of the skater.

So, if a skater completes a 3Z+1T, they receive 0 points, but if they fall on the 3Z they get +COMBO credit? How is that right?

IMO opinion Satoko is the most beautiful skater of this field. Liza has the technical goods, she is amazing, but if you are looking for quality and beautiful elements Satoko is your girl. Best spins, musicality, the quality of her skating reminds me of Mao. She has a long way to go to be at Mao's level, but I love everything she does.
