Hi, everyone, this is my first post!
I’ve been a silent reader, and felt impressed by your love for yuzuru and FS.
I’m not good at English, and I’ve been hesitated to join you. But this time PW really got me exited, and gave me enough nerve to throw the first post. I would like to talk about yuzuru and FS with funs around the world!

I was talking with my dad about yuzuru's english In the interviews and I remembered that when we hosted a Japanese student, she played her english skills down so she wouldn't get so overwhelmed with questions from us. I'm not saying this in any offensive way, but maybe Yuzuru knows more than he lets on to avoid lots of press? Especially since he can communicate with Brian and the CC brothers well.

It might be as you said due to the overwhelming presence of the press and being worried about being saying something wrong or being misunderstood if expected to speak in English, there have been other athletes I know that do that. But to me it seems more like but he just has trouble communicating his thoughts verbally although I think he understands what is being asked. So I think he probably has a greater knowledge of English but has trouble communicating. Cause for me, there are some languages I can read/write/understand but struggle just when speaking.

Hey I don't know if this was posted here, but here is a montage of Yuzuru skating to "young and beautiful" by Lana del Rey and I have to say it is SO BEAUTIFUL. Now i want him to do it for real seriously!!! It also came as a surprisingly deep reflection on Hanyu's enormous popularity and star-like status...

I saw this video before but, oh boy, how much I wish that he had a liking for this type of english pop music, it enhances his skating so much more ... He could do these EXs when he's in foreign countries. But well, that's why there's those types of audio montages :hopelessness:

In my opinion, I don't think so. Yuzuru isn't the type of person to downplay his skills, he likes to show it of as much as wants. I guess he would want to speak eloquently in english for days if he could I think he just really struggles in expressing himself, vocabulary etc, Javier himself said that Yuzuru isn't great in english and their conversation usually fall short, so this doesn't happen only when Yuzuru's talking to the press. But he seems to understand a lot of english, that's why he's able to comunicate with Orser.

He definitely understands a lot more than he lets on in interviews. I don't think its intentional but usually when people aren't confident about their 2nd language, they freeze up in the spotlight and its hard to produce the words/sentences as you normally would in a relaxed atmosphere. It also happens when someone gets too excited, their accent becomes much more pronounce :yes:

Remember that Yuzuru and Brian (Tracy, Nam, etc.) are people that expend(in a normal year) lots of time together, they are used to the way he speaks, so even when he mades mistake they probably still gets what's he means... on the other hand press...

I agree with you that yuzu is definitely someone who prefers showing of his abilities and skills to hiding them up! Just look at how he tried jumping all these crazy combinations in galas

Yep, he's such a show off. And he isn't a shy person either, he's very extrovert, so it isn't a problem of being shy of speaking english, he usually makes a lot of mistakes but tries anyway and doesn't care at all.
I remember I saw an old video of him at school where he was saying how much he hates languages. Or was it an interview ... I don't remember exactly. Anyway, he seems to be a math and science kind of guy. (But he also seems to be an emotive and passionate person which is interesting.) Pardon my crappy psychological analysis moment

Ah that makes sense now that I think about it. The girl was also very reserved when she stayed( happy to say she has married an American that works for a very successful company with two kids, speaking English very well )

Yes, I assert he has showed as much as he can do in speaking English.
I know how he has been struggling with speaking English. For most Japanese, speaking English is very very difficult (me, too..). “Language barrier” from Japanese to English is much higher than you imagine. Receiving a question, interrupting it, thinking a reply in Japanese, then translating it into English while thinking of syntax, grammar, etc. . this cycle is hard for him and most Japanese…

Of course, he is a bright guy. I wish he will intensely practice English conversation this summer. It must be different.

Whenever I see Shoma, I have to laugh. A lot of the Japanese men are so extroverted (Nobu, Dai, Yuzu, even Sota) and Shoma's like this shy - but confident - innocent kid.

sport and when mastering something special (quads, axels, etc.) he wants to share his excitement with others.
He loves seeing others's sucsess too. He was happy Javi landed quad, wasn't he?
So, it's not about love for spotlight.
As for English, I think he doesn't want to be misunderstood, so prefers professional interprener doing his job.
Btw, speaking of Ex song on English- his skating to Pang-Tong's "I dreamed a dream" on worlds gala practice was mesmerizing.

People who had met Yuzuru in real life (before he got too famous) said "He is not shy at all".
Of course you are shy to people who you don't know or people you don't understand their language.

I don't think Japanese men a shy in general. Maybe they have been brought up to restrain a lot. Yuzuru is someone you don't see in Japan street often, though. He seems to be very carefree when he is not in competition mood.

The height difference is enough to make a pair ha ha, maybe Yuzuru can throw Sui. But yes no one is better for Sui than Cong Han.

If my lipreading is right, Yuzu said "Orita?" (landed?) to Shoma and Sena. Shoma said yes, and Sena said no. -All the guys tried a jump at the Finale.

The ease with which the 3A comes to him is something that will never stop amazing me Mao's face though, everyone is just as speechless when he throws those sequences, I remember seeing a fancam of CoR 2011, I think Yuzuru did a 3A+3A and Yulia's face was just

2015 worlds gala practice.
You guys just sound like Yuzuru does quads to be admired. My opinion he does them because he explores which hights he can achieve in his fav.sport.
It's different points of view, that's all.
Btw, Madison Chock retweeted video of Yuzu's 4R-3A. So glad that ice dancers appreciate that too.
