I also agree, I can't feel comfortable seeing a skater jumping and landing super close to the boards, neither can i stand seeing them skate super near to the boards (even if they don't hit it)?

And even Yuzuru once hit the board (SP at WC 2013) so if anything I'd like to see him never get too close to the board at all. Yuzuru already has top notch skating skill and only behind Patrick and maybe Kozuka (Jeremy is too inconsistent to count), female skaters are in no contest at all for this as they use too many crossovers.
With Yuzuru, 2 crossovers and he's on the other side of the rink. Honestly who needs getting close to the board?

:agree: In fact, skating close to the boards bothers me quite a bit, if you are viewing it live and you're on the side that the skater is skating very close to, you can only see maybe half their body if you're in the very front, and it's worse the further up the rows you go. At the GPF, I actually couldn't how Hanyu had landed his 4S in the LP because it ended up being a bit close to the boards on my side but farther down the rink, I only knew he landed it beautifully by the audience reaction :laugh: It's different with cameras and TV coverage, but skating in the middle, skating fast and in intricate patterns across the entire rink (but not too close the boards) showcases the choreography, control of skating skills, and the performance of the skater the best for me.

Haha, so maybe that's why our point of views could be so different from that of judges and those watching live broadcasts, lols, coz we can see well despite them going near the boards but spectators can't:laugh:

Getting to close to the boards is sometimes due to the arena size. Skaters get used to practicing their routines in their home rinks. In North America, most rinks are 80 x 200 feet (NHL ice surface size). Many of the ice rinks in Europe are 100 x 200 (Olympic size ice surface). So sometimes it isn't that the skaters like to be close to the boards or trying to maximize ice coverage, it may simply be because they are used to training in different sized rinks. When you are skating and you have your jumps timed to certain beats of the music, the timing of when you pick is crucial, so you might have to wait one addition second to attempt the jump and end up being too close to the boards (not on purpose). Also, sometimes adrenaline plays a factor. A skater may be super excited, and thus be skating slightly faster than normal (stronger strides and cross overs than normal)…and then get more ice coverage than they are used to…hence their jumps end up being closer to the boards than they anticipated.

Many different factors play into this. Just from my own experience.

About 3 quads, it seems a must. The judges are making it clear who land more quads among the top skater get the higher PCS.

Worlds is being held in the TD Gardens which is an NHL arena. So the normal configuration is 80 x 200 feet size. When worlds was held in Calgary, wthe Saddledome has the capability of expanding to 100 x 200 by retracting the first two rows of seating which was done for Olympics. However for Worlds, they did not made the rink wider., it wasnt a requirment like it was for olympics. So, i suspect that in Boston, they might not even have this capability because i think TD Gardens is an older arena....so skaters may be stuck with slightly narrower ice surface.

Does this mean ISU does not have a requirement that all ISU sanctioned competitions need to be of a standard size rink (100x200)?

Thanks!!! I know, I'm super excited for next season and I havent even recovered from this one, I'm kinda like Yuzu!! Haha. After thinking about it a bit more...its not like Patrick is old...he and Javi are basically the same age. Im just so used to thinking young (16-20) like Yuzu and Nam!!

Wow - so many great posts from everyone on upcoming season(s)! Enjoyed your blog post won006, and all the info as an experienced competitive skater. Interesting thoughts on rink size, ice coverage, and skating close to the boards.

I hope 3 quads is not a requirement for 2018 OGM. 2 good quads, spins, transitions, difficult and interesting jump entrances/exits, steps would make a terrific program and should be enough technically. I'm not sure how compressed PCS for the top guys would be if they all skated back-to-back in the same competition. My own personal opinion would be Patrick, then Denis/Yuzu, with Javi lower down.

Ice Shows - just say no, or minimize the number. Numerous ice shows and commitments in Japan last summer => Yuzuru was not well-prepared and increased the chances of injury when the season started. My heart SANK when I saw the posts about ice shows starting in May. :hopelessness: Does he really want to jeopardize his chances for World title by not taking adequate rest, then training properly under Brian and avoiding injury?

Yuzu is going to do less shows, but I guess he'll do DOI at least, since Japanese members team are presenting their new programs. No need to worry already.
 
He's taking a months rest in Canada then doing a few shows. Not a big deal and I think its good for him to show off his new program and get some public feedback :yes: Plus he enjoys doing them so as long as he keeps it at a low number he'll be fine and it'll keep things fresh for him.

I really miss TOI though.....everything about it was perfect :hopelessness: Will we have to wait till 2018 to get another TOI? :cry:

I love very much watching Yuzu in shows,he is a very good entartainer, but I want him to rest because his health is the most important thing. Take care Yuzu!!!

Resting in Toronto? Two training sessions per day (total 4 hours) plus pilates, and university coursework for full-time degree. He said with that training regime (at TCC) that he's too exhausted to go out an explore Toronto or surrounding areas.

@Bonesfan I trust he and his team knows better than to overwork himself especially with what happened in the last few months. And Brian's there to keep an eye on him. Its alot better than him training in Japan by himself and having to attend all the ceremonies and press interviews.
