Slow Motion Jump Editing (AKA: Sam's Jump-a-ma-tron)

I have a few days off early next week and could use some suggestions to edit. I'm cool with doing either jumpamatrons, fan videos, or event mash ups. Feel free to offer musical selections and specific programs. If your into watching these videos just chime in and offer up ideas or I'll just find one myself.

I've always wanted to see some jumpamatrons of 4-3-2s, comparisons between the skaters who have done them, Plushy, Brian, I think Yags did some and even Thomas Verner did one once! Or was it KVDP? Of course I'm not actually sure what programs the latter three did them in so I might be asking a bit much!

Lambiel did one in Torino 2006. It was phenomenal.

Yagudin did one in SLC 2002. Not sure if he's done another (maybe 2002 Worlds too?)

KVDP once performed 4-3-3. I'd love to see a comparison video of that along with Kevin Reynolds' 4-3-3 and Plushy's 4-3-3 (the one from 02-03 GPF with the huge opening quad). Oddly enough, I'm not sure if KVDP ever did 4-3-2.

Don't know about Tomas or Brian.

I've noted the suggestions over here and started compiling clips. I probably won't get anything done until thursday so keep offering suggestions. Keep in mind that Sochi Videos are hard to find and usually get copyright violations.

Also suggesting an entire event isn't off limits either. Like THIS video I can just grab the top few performances or suggested skaters and make mash ups. I'm off Thursday and it looks like a rainy day is in the forecast.

. . . also if anyone is really board, you could take a stab at at editing the two clips of Jason's Brown's short into a single video. We kinda have a first half and a second half with some cuts, could be interesting to try to splice them together into a pseudo full run through. I think someone did something similar with Hanyu's program last year, finding the clips and piecing the program together ahead of time as best they could - they had to add the music as well. There might be other opportunities to splice together previews in the coming months.

I've spent the last week trying to think of new ideas for video editing but coming up short. I guess it's just that time of the year where the past season is becoming a distant memory while substantial new content for next season hasn't fully materialized yet. If anyone has any creative ideas but lacks the video editing resources, I'm all ears if willing to share.

I can only do so many triple axel and Liza-gush video edits, after all...

I haven't really been following Jason Brown in the off-season, so I'm a little curious about this. Are you referring to Jason's new SP? If so, you're saying there are bits & pieces of it out there already that could be edited together to form a 'full' program? If you could give me a little more information on this, I could evaluate if I could work with the material. Maybe point me in the right direction of links to video, program info, etc -- either in this thread, or you could PM me details as well.

We have two clips (full disclosure filmed with phone not great quality - I know he is not your favorite sabinfire, so i totally understand if you don't want to deal with potato quality) of his program that show the first and second half that I *think* has all the music for his new short this year.

First half includes starting position

at about 15 second he stops moving, we think it is going to be a spin or step sequence he has not finalized yet.

Starts again at about 29 seconds, but then at 35 it cuts back to a different run through starting with him standing about to move again. Starts moving at about 46 seconds. It is pretty obvious that he is doing the same thing at this part from two different runs (not a criticism, but just an observation). The second clip runs till his final pose.

So we have two clips, with one being made of two clips. In theory we could paste the three together to get a single video of the skeleton (as they have called it) of the program. It might be fun to put together a preview like this for any skater. Plus it might be something we can keep our eyes out to do with other skaters. Depending on what they share that is.

If you are looking for ideas, one idea that I think would be interesting is looking at different jump takes offs. For instance we have seen a lot of lutzs with a take off similar to a loop this season, but there are other approaches. . . i know this cuz i have seen people discussing the various different ways. Comparing the different ways to enter a jump could be an interesting option. Full disclosure, this is a selfish suggestion, as it is something i don't know a lot about (no i can not name the options - wish i could) but would love to see. It does seem within the spirit of the thread.

Also, with all the wonderful fan fest updating that has been done, we have a lot of clips compiled of skaters over the years. I think a some clip montages of the skaters as they were growing could be really cute. Jason and Josh have been competing at Nationals for 10 years now, a montage of them over the years as the grew up in front of us could be really cute (also I think we have a pretty complete library for both of them). Given how young Liza was when she first appeared at nationals, I bet she would be a fun one to watch grow into the world champion she is today. Nam could be a good one give how much of a weed he turned into.

I think Jason's camp would politely contact you if they had an issue. Frankly I think his camp understands once something is online, it becomes out of your control - so I don't think they release stuff they don't mind being re-purposed. The first clip got most of its 40k views in the first 24 hours and long before the second half was posted - i tend to think they would not have posted the second half if they were that concerned with it being seen.

And you are not the only one annoyed with the orientation, my better half has been squawking at that whenever i watch them.

I would not worry too much about Liza growing on your channel. It is your channel and you can have your favorites. Sometimes there is something to be said for doing what you know. It might be better for you to do it first with a skater you know well and know their history, it seems that might be easier than researching a new skater. I would see no harm in a new Liza video especially if it includes footage not already on your channel. I would not have mentioned her as a suggestion if i thought she had reached a saturation point.

Nothing elaborate, but I pieced together the 3 parts into one video with 'new' music... still a few seconds of Jason just kinda standing around, but there wasn't much to replace it with other than recycling previously used video (which I wasn't going to do)... so here's my best attempt. Video is marked 'unlisted' for now due to its quality, but links can be freely shared if anyone feels its worth sharing.

Honestly that turned out way better than I expected, I am enamoured! You really have an artistic touch with these videos, I was expecting something somewhat crude (given what you have to work with) but you make it smooth and beautiful. I think the new track really ads a lot to the senselessness of it so thank you for taking the extra step... also I think the right holder to that might be a bit of an indie type group, so may not be so bad to give a nod to. Based on Mrs. P's research they seem to be a tribute orchestra with not much info on. Thank you so much. Even my kitty came in and checked it out, but she does do that a lot.

I also want to say I think your "Early Training" mark at both the beginning and end was very classy and a great idea. Thank you for adding it. It is just one of those little things that you can do to show that youtube is not a threat but an ally. Excellent touch!

When I edit these types of videos and toss in a musical track, I don't mind if the rights holder wants to generate ad revenue off their song. I enjoy promoting songs I like, even if it's using them in skate videos. I just wanted to be transparent about monetised claims on my uploads, because my channel is not monitised by myself, nor do I 'have a choice' in whether my videos are claimed by third-parties upon uploading them.

Thank you for the compliments. It wasn't much to work with, but it was a good attempt. Still crude by my standards these days, though I guess we don't always have the best content to work with. Just itching to edit more videos these days... and the well is coming up dry.

I think your attitude is great again, a wonderful example of showing how youtube can be an asset to artist. I think the transparency is wonderful, and think it is very much in the spirit of youtube, i have seen others offer similar transparency and i think it is a good thing.

With luck we will find more stuff in the coming months as we get to see some club comps. I still watch your "Heaven knows I'm Miserable" video when i am in the mood for a song.My better half likes the song so i get to watch skating, he does not complain and we all smile. We can come up with ideas.

And you could always start doing commentary if you really wanted. I know i would watch.

I could do better justice to that Smiths edit today than I did with the original, as it was the first video I ever created in that style. But I often feel that way whenever I look back at videos I uploaded months (or even weeks) ago. I'm glad someone is still watching those.

I've thought about the commentary thing. I have a condenser studio microphone hooked up to my PC and I'm perfectly capable of recording professional voice-overs (from an equipment standpoint, at least ), it's just that balance between how much of yourself you want to put out there on the internet, how much of my 'opinion' I want to display on Youtube, etc...

It's my channel so I can do what I want, right? Who knows, it will probably all hinge on how bored I get and how much free time I have to commit to YouTube.

Thank you Sabinfire, this skeleton video with the music added was fascinating; what an excellent idea And I know that Russian ladies are to you what American men are to me, so I appreciate your taking the time to construct for a discipline/skater that is not your favorite.

Thanks guys! I flipped the video over to public view since it's generated positive reception. Looks like the views are already in the hundreds. A link must have been posted somewhere highly visible, because my analytics page is showing a huge spike in views during the past couple hours (about a hundred over the last hour alone, and still coming in).

el henry -- glad you liked the edit, I didn't expect something of such low video quality (and a bare-bones training session) would get more than a few dozen views. And yes, the Men's field is not my favorite, but if we're going by Nationality/Discipline, I would place #1) Russian ladies, #2) American men. I prefer Ice Dance over Men, though I don't see any one country with enough depth to place so high on the list.

Have you ever thought of making a comparative video of the Russian ladies? Pick around 3, and show videos of each of them jumping the same jump so we can have notions of height, exiting flow, ice coverage and edges. You could do the same with spins (speed, position, etc). It would take a while, but heck, it would be interesting.
