Slow Motion Jump Editing (AKA: Sam's Jump-a-ma-tron)

The 3A video is very cool. :) I think I spent more time admiring the interesting screens than the jumps.

I know, that's what happened to me during editing. I'm sure there's a cleaner approach to doing this, though. Editing tools for this type of thing aren't exactly the most intuitive to work with. Still really intrigued at experimenting with the other possibilities that can be brought into video editing for skating.

Curious where all my traffic is coming from for this particular video. Real-time analytics says 500 views (and climbing) and the video has only been posted for ~12 hours -- pleasantly surprised to see people are still interested in skating videos at this stage of the season, as I was concerned that nobody would watch any of these types of videos with the off-season quickly upon us, and I'd mostly be entertaining myself.

But... is it the editing tricks, or the combined fans of Mao Asada & Liza that are the draw here? (For the past month, my YouTube channel has a primarily Japanese and Russian-based demographic, or so Google tells me anyway.)

I fooled around with more editing on this one(colors primarily and some FX) and less with the slow motion jumpamatron. Hopefully people enjoy it even though its mostly just a fan video and a lot less of a jumpamatron.

Would it be possible to do a similar picture for Pairs skating too? For example, Peng/Zhang's quad twist and Sui/Han's throw triple flip look huge - would be interesting to see how high/far they are!

+1 on pairs, they are so neglected in this thread =(

If you guys have any suggestions I'm all for doing some pairs stuff :)

Provided links(in HD) with suggested sections would be greatly appreciated. I did notice some up thread. I'll have a few days with down time coming up this week.

Until then and FWIW I created a thread during 4cc and asked for everyone's favorite moments and then created a video based on them. The first section has some pairs footage to enjoy. Now that I think of it some throws would look very cool going in both directions in full on slow jumpamatron mode.

Yes... a throw quad salchow in reverse slow-motion with the lady springing back toward the guy like a magnet?

Last call for suggestions on pairs for slow motion editing. Right now I'm doing a remix of Pairs FS from 2015 WC for placements 1 thru 4. Feel free to offer up a moment from this WC that I should include in the video or something you'd like to see. My remixes are more like mash up of the events but I may do some slow motion pairs jumps in true jumpamatron fashion here soon so keep those suggestions coming. Please offer links when available and at least 720p HD is prefered.

I've searched for HD quality of Zhang/Zhang quad sal at Nationals but can't find it. I'll try to edit a bad version if need be but if anyone has a higher quality version of it.....I'm all for it. Thanks to anyone who participates.

Sui/Han, throw 3F: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FarhqPI1DE0&t=0m46s The wild air position just makes it better. :p Also, since you like 'tano, here's their 'tano 3Tw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FarhqPI1DE0&t=1m19s

Peng/Zhang, quad twist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-istLR29n0&t=1m3s If you can't get the old quad throw in HQ, this (different kind of) quad comes pretty close in wow factor.

I'd provide more links, but my computer doesn't seem to like Youtube at the moment. :slink: Usual suspects: SBS 3Lz from Duhamel/Radford and Marchei/Hotarek, throw 3S from Pang/Tong, ect.

Actually, y'know what would be cool? A side-by-side of some pairs elements, like how Sabinfire compiled Mao and Liza's 3As. 4Tw from Sui/Han, Peng/Zhang, and Scimeca/Knierim. Throw 4S from Kavaguti/Smirnov and Duhamel/Radford. SBS lutzes from D/R and M/H. ect. (Not saying you should do more work or promising you'd get many views for this. Just an idea for something pairs oriented, if you want to try it).

ATTENTION PAIRS FANS :)

here is my first attempt at a pairs video. I used some slow motion editing but chose on this one to mostly show the top four finishers executing the elements in sort of a comparison style. One right after the other.

I admit that pairs is the discipline I know the least about so feel free to tell me what I missed in this event and I'll make some jumpamatron videos if anyone is interested but studying the protocols to find high GOE elements or where things were located in the programs to make short clips is helping me to learn.

I've never really watched Peng/Zheng before this but really liked what they do overall. Watching Sui and Pang land their throw jumps really really impressed me.

Wonderful work, Sam. What a great way to appreciate the elements--not just the size, but also the flow and effortless speed some pairs attain on the exit (I'm thinking of S/H's throw 3S and P/Z's exit off the 4Tw, especially). Great musical timing on your part too--love how you cut to the SBS spins and combo spins as the guitars kicked in. :)

Wow, Sam this is a masterpiece! I got indeed goosebumps while watching the video. I really appreciate your all effort for making it. I love not just the way of editing but also your choice of the music and thoughtful selection of scenes from the performance on that day. The opening scene of the city and audience also is a good hint of where the great competition was held. The comparisons each by each are also amazing. Thank you.

Thanks!! I have to be honest I actually tear up myself a bit during the final emotional scenes everytime. These athletes have put so much work in that its nice to capture that special momemt when we get to see them rewarded for their hard work on such a big stage. That's part of the motivation behind making these videos. I'm glad people can enjoy them.

^When I downloaded the V/T FS from Sochi it downloaded as "video playback". It won't let me open the file in Sony Vegas (my editor). I'm assuming it's because it's the Olympics and there is a safeguard in place preventing re-uploads. To bad....I had a plan to remix the whole epic FS with music from a really cool soundtrack. :hopelessness:

Putting a request for a Jason Brown spilt-a-ma-ton! (I requested it in the WTT thread), but figured I'd put it here too. :)

No hurry or urgency and only when time/life/other stuff permits. :)

Could you try a different tool? I just downloaded the V/T FS in 1080p from that link above and it plays back fine for me.

Someone left me a comment on YouTube about making a video to compare Mao's 3A from Worlds 2014 and Liza's 3A from WTT, so I pulled up my old Mao/Liza 3A (from Worlds 2014/2015) and re-edited it to include WTT footage.

This thing was ridiculous to edit since it was difficult to keep track of what exactly was happening in the 3 or 4 simultaneous screens that were all going at once, but now you can see Mao & Liza's triple axels from Worlds 2014, Worlds 2015, and WTT 2015 at the same time :sarcasm: :

It looks great!
Both of their 3A's are very good.
Just from looking at it, I'd call Mao's pretty, and Elizaveta's powerful. Sort of like the difference between Yuzu's 3A and Han's 3A.
...oooh, could someone do a comparison between Han's 3A from his Worlds SP and Yuzu's 3A from the GPF SP or Worlds?
