Slow Motion Jump Editing (AKA: Sam's Jump-a-ma-tron)

Mariah Bell :)

Viewable in up to 720p HD if you select it on the settings.

This thread has had so many views. Thank you so much Sabinfire for making this thing work and just as importantly thank you to all who have participated. It's hard to fulfill all the requests considering some of these videos are multiple hour adventures or Sochi videos which are just hard to gain quality access to.

I'm looking forward to next season and a new thread. This time it will be titled: Slow Motion Editing II (the Golden Skate Jumpamatron)....unless GS doesn't want to be associated with it.

I'm working on compiling up all of the links to update the OP so it can all be accessed in one easy to get to place.

I've updated the OP with every link I could find and gave credit to those who edited or brought outside jumpamatrons in for us to see. Thanks again to all. Next season is only a few falling leafs away.

FWIW Sabinfire totally kicked my butt and landed 26 videos while I was in at 19. :points:
Here is the list of edited video's born in this thread.

For some reason the footage of the WTT FS for Ashley was a bit grainy and since the broadcast didn't offer up the 3z-3t at the end, in the kiss and cry slow motion reviews, I never really was able to show if the 3z-3t was UR as I suspect you wanted to see. I tried many different speeds and zooms but it just kept getting fuzzy. I tried something new which was to stop the video completely still at the point of landing and that failed. Well....on my editor it showed that Ashley probably did UR in a perfect frozen screen shot but after the uploading process it just looks blurry. I may try to retool and re-upload it later but for now this is the best I can get.

The good news is I threw in the one from the SP too and a lot of bonus footage. They really went crazy with zooming in on her face and I kind of took advantage of it.

ps....Sorry if you don't like the music but I've been on a bit of an Indie Folk kick the last few days ;)

Thanks, it's great. I really like Ashley's 2A, she has no visible pre-rotation on the ice, I never realized that. Or am I wrong?

Wow, didn't know I've probably made over 30 'specially edited' videos already.

And it was your original idea to start the thread, Sam -- along with ideas from many others, most recently StitchMonkey for the concept of the Jason Brown SP Skeleton'amatron (posted just over a day ago and now at 1k+ views ;) )

Unfortunately, I don't have the greatest creative bones in my body, and often just build off other people's ideas/suggestions/input. That's really the heart of video editing at its core... the ability to take footage/ideas/input from others and mold a project into something cohesive and interesting to watch.

Thanks for compiling the complete list for the OP, Sam. And thanks for creating this thread.

Are you importing live-stream captures as the source video? Those types of recordings are notoriously difficult to work with in editing because of the poor color balancing, duplicated frame rates, etc. If you have something better to work with, especially an original .TS file of true 1080p HD footage, it is much easier to work with.

Despite the quality of the video and the editing job, YouTube still uses its own form of compression/filtering on videos when you upload them, always making them look worse than your original video. Nothing to be done about that, unless you want to start posting raw video files on MediaFire or something... but takes the fun out of sharing videos on a public place like YouTube.

I took Japanese footage of Ashley's WTT FS and tried working with that. Some blur/fuzziness is expected whenever you are slowing down and zooming on real-speed video, and as you mentioned, there was no slow-motion replay of the 3Lz+3T shown during the WTT broadcast... so we can only work with real-speed video from that one single camera angle.

Here is the 3Lz+3T at normal speed, zoomed in at normal speed, slowed down 50% in forward and reverse, and slowed down 30% in forward and reverse with a close-up:

What the heck is an original .ts file and how can I find them. I just grab videos off of YouTube and look for the at least 720p quality. I'm kind of a computer dummy. :slink:

Part of the problem is I slow the video down too much at times and bend that velocity bar mid jump. It's a work in progress full of trial and error I guess but I believe I've been getting a bit better at it as the season continued.

A .ts file is a Transport Stream.

Here's an in-depth Wikipedia article on TS files: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG_transport_stream

That article is probably too techie for most people to bother reading, so in layman's terms, TS files are typically much higher video/audio quality than anything you will find in popular formats today (.avi, .mp4, .wmv, .mov, etc.)

TS files typically house original HD videos from broadcasts. They are a bit like digital copies of a master recording.

Whoops, I forgot to comment on this post. Great job on the Mariah video! It's interesting to see how each of our editing styles come through in every video we post. I could take the Pepsi challenge with unmarked videos from myself, Sam, Unite, etc... and easily identify who made which video (obviously I could pick out myself, just trying to make a point here. )

I'm in no position to verify this, but I would think a thread posted here on GoldenSkate would want to be associated with threads that are posted here? I do wonder the same about content outside of GS, though. Sometimes I've considered referencing GS in the description of a YouTube video (such as, "this concept came from GS"), but I don't know if GS would want to be associated with external content.

Hullo hullo, my jumpy friends - I was wondering if someone was up for a Brendan Kerry jumpamatron? 4T, 4S, and 3A - you could probably get all those from the Four Continents videos.

I believe he skated in the earlier groups, right? Not sure if I have any true HD footage of Brendan.

Slightly off-topic -- anyone ever check out the 4K videos on YouTube? These things are proof that YouTube actually has the capability to play beautiful, detailed HD video without all the horrible compression they use on videos below 4k quality. The vibrant colors and intricate detail is truly breathtaking. I wonder how long it will be before we see figure skating recorded in 4k?

If your device/display will allow it (sorry mobile users), turn the following video up to 2160p4k quality and prepare to be blown away:

Ah, well then. I guess I shall have to wait for Skate America, and I am certain that he will give us HD video of those jumps there.

Whoever recorded this HD practice from 4CC did a decent job:

No slow-motion replays or alternative camera angles, though. And they sound like a hard-*** when it comes to their recordings: "Do Not Re-Upload & Secondary Processing"

Also, I found a 720p HD version of his SP from Worlds using TDP footage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_OFaESGsG4

I did not do an exhaustive search, but I was not able to come up with a good HD version of his FS.

If you are looking for ideas, one idea that I think would be interesting is looking at different jump takes offs. For instance we have seen a lot of lutzs with a take off similar to a loop this season, but there are other approaches. . . i know this cuz i have seen people discussing the various different ways. Comparing the different ways to enter a jump could be an interesting option. Full disclosure, this is a selfish suggestion, as it is something i don't know a lot about (no i can not name the options - wish i could) but would love to see. It does seem within the spirit of the thread.

I know what you are talking about, I have seen these discussions too. Instructional videos on the intricacy of unusual jump take-offs wouldn't exactly be my forte. Sounds like you are asking for more than your basic 'this is a lutz, this is a loop' type of video -- not many specific examples come to mind to use for a video. Do you recall the skaters/jumps where the entry was debated, to the extent that multiple examples could be used to show the different styles in entering a jump? (Stitch -- you acknowledged you don't know a lot about this, so it's really an open question to anyone.)

And you could always start doing commentary if you really wanted. I know i would watch.

I touched on this a bit before: the idea itself seems interesting. But as we've seen, commentary has a way of being divisive, and the only way people would find this sort of thing interesting is to be opinionated to a fault. (Not too difficult for many of us. ) I think it would work best if it weren't simply one person solo commentating, with at least one other person to help temper the commentary with another view. Plus, I just think it's a little dull to hear one person talking v.s. the banter between a duo/trio. The logistics of doing such a thing purely 'for fun' would be difficult.

Also, I wonder if the 'audience' for that content would be limiting, as it would be aimed strictly at people who can understand conversational English fluently. My channel generates most of its traffic from Japan/Russia, though you wouldn't know it from reading the comments. I imagine I still have a substantial NA-based audience in views and subscribers though...

Have you ever thought of making a comparative video of the Russian ladies? Pick around 3, and show videos of each of them jumping the same jump so we can have notions of height, exiting flow, ice coverage and edges. You could do the same with spins (speed, position, etc). It would take a while, but heck, it would be interesting.

This is a possibility. Probably best to edit footage from the same competition (i.e. Euros) for consistency in camera angles and video quality, but obviously, a variety of events could be used if they appear close enough for comparison. What would this presentation look like? Would it be SBS/split-screen comparisons in real-time & slow-mo? Would it involve some kind of on-screen illustrations attempting to show height, distance, GoE?

Keep in mind, I do not know how to calculate things like jump height based on video footage alone. There are others that claim to have this ability although I am not sure how they arrived at their conclusions (seems to involve a lot of math, which I am terrible at).

My idea isn't exactly to pick the best by height, but depending on the jumper you can tell if it has a good height. Maybe take the GOE's features for jumps and see how many apply? I thought about showing each jump in slow motion separately, the skater's name on top, then show the GOE's after the landing and switch to another skater. If it is done with a single jump, it wouldn't be more than 4-5 minutes and you might add more ladies (top 3 at Nationals + Lipnitskaia + Adelina, for example).

Something else, that I hope doesn't come across as rude. As I was watching some of the older videos created, I noticed the probability of them showing in a Youtube search is small, if we take a title such as Polina's Flip. A friendly suggestion of mine would be to name each video in the same order:

Jumpamatron: Polina Edmond's Flip, &
Jumpamatron: Julia Lipnitskaia's Lutz, etc.

By typing Jumpamatron, users would get all videos made. By typing the skater's name, the Jumpamatron will appear among videos of programs.

Again, I hope you aren't offended by the suggestion. Since I use the GS links, it doesn't make a difference for me but might make for others. Thank you very much, Sam and sabinfire, for making Jump-a-ma-tron exist!

There was a great thread either on here or FSUniverse that literally was called something like "favorite lutz entry" that went on for pages and pages talking about different ways people can enter lutzs. I recall a lot of talk about Nicole Bobeck changing things often and how it played out. I guess she would often not be trained well enough to do one entry/approach, so she would change it. The problem is that is is like reading mad libs to me. I'd love to see that various ways a skater can go into a jump. Even though i don't know any of the terms, seeing people talk about how things can be done was still fascinating.

Another example, and maybe a clearer one, would be how skaters are supposed to do footwork before their solo triple/quad in the SP. I would love to see a few of the possible things they can do to full fill that requirement, but also have the names of what is happening on the screen so that i can learn.

There was a clip a while back of Nam and Javi doing side by side quad sals (I think it was a sal, i could be remembering wrong and it may have been a toe, but it was the same jump regardless) and what they did before was very different. For lack of a better way to put it, they were not pair skating, they were clearly doing do different things leading up to the same jump, then suddenly did the same jump together. I find that really interesting. I'd love to see a jump a matron with a "here is one entrance to a quad sal with the proper names, and here is a different way to do it"

But again, I am talking about stuff over my own head so I don't blame you for not thinking it is as interesting as i do.

I think you bring up some good points. You already mentioned the not wanting to put yourself out there too much which is more than fair, but the two people vs audience also makes a lot of sense. I do enjoy seeing the discussion so I know I would watch it. I think commentary really is something you should only start doing if it sounds fun to you to do. If it does, it might be fun to dabble in, but it does not sound like your eyes are lighting up with excitement at the prospect.

maybe some jumps by GOE (when this is fairly reasonable)?
So pick same type of jumps, lets say 3Lz, and pick a few examples illustrating the GOE range...

Not sure if useful/interesting really, could be instructive on how the scoring works.

I have a request: Adelina's 3Lz-3T at the Olympics. I heard that most Olympic videos are being taken off but I can still watch the CBC one.

This is not meant to create argument. I just really want to see if it deserved calls.

Post an HD link please. Maybe we should also post Yuna's errant Lutz to keep things on the up and up. This topic seems to ruin threads with a lot of one sided opinions. I mean...it's very possible they both got away with one. ;)
